  1. Now, it would be lucky to make $30 million. A bunch of people would insist that there was never really a theatrical market for a Yesterday, it's been decades since movies like this really sold any tickets, it wouldn't have done any before, etc. And to think, $73 million was seen as a "meh" result back then. On Wikipedia, it does list the movie in Ana's filmography but says the scenes were deleted. IMDb also lists Yesterday for her, but just says she's uncredited, which is a lot more vague. Either way, the lawsuit seems flimsy and not worth the money they'll end up getting, unless these guys are just using LegalZoom or some legal insurance service they're already paying for.
  2. People have this idea that Affleck and Damon seem too "modern" to be believable in a Medieval story, which I never like as a criticism because unless someone's had bad cosmetic work, we're all descended from people who were alive back then. I love this Twitter account that enhances old photos, it shatters the notion that people looked fundamentally different than us in the past: https://twitter.com/StuartHumphryes The accent thing is a movie convention you get used to: "distant past = British accents". If they were going with French accurate to the time, very few people would even understand what was being said. If Last Duel had been in (modern) French with French actors, how many of the Film Twitter complainers would have even watched it? Anyway, I think minds were made up about Damon and Affleck in this movie well before it was made, between skepticism about their handling of the subject matter and their suitability for the roles. And their hair...it may be accurate to the times but the stills showed them with laughable bleached goatees/mullets, while Adam Driver had great flowing locks.
  3. The opening stretch made me think of how this property would’ve worked as a limited series, where there's more time to linger with the atmosphere and the side characters. It's not that the carnival stuff was boring, but it might have lost me if I hadn't seen the original or read the book and known where the story was ultimately going.
  4. I didn't think so, since he's such an NBC guy and is on the edgier side. ABC might go to bat against the Film Twitter mob for someone in their stable, but not someone from another network. Alas, it would have led to the convergence of like five celebrity triangles at the Dolby, Deuxmoi would have been in heaven. Seriously, I do like the idea in the article of the Only Murders in the Building trio, it caters to multiple generations without being a totally random grouping who might not mesh.
  5. I think they're just saying that whoever was responsible seemed particularly unaware and out of their depth, and not a top professional. That is an outdated idea, of social media management not being a "real" job, kind of like how some people are still using "millenial" to refer to teenagers. What are you gonna do?
  6. Looks like the HFPA (you know, members of the media) couldn't be bothered with actually running their own social media account for Sunday’s big event: All the big critics groups tweet their winners in real time without trying to entertain everyone. Just say who won and what for! It's seriously not that hard. Though ultimately, the crazy tweets got Globes more publicity, so good for them? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  7. Will Kim Kardashian be front row? How tacky will Pete's introduction be for the "Just Look Up" performance, if Ariana gets nominated? Did the producers just float the Pete rumor so the film snobs will think Tom Holland isn't such a bad choice after all?
  8. Affleck and JLo will be up front and the camera will pan to them for reactions throughout the night. Leto would only miss the SAG ceremony if it's canceled...or he is. Cooper barely promoted the movie he starred in this season, let alone Licorice Pizza, and the SAGs aren't exactly the Oscars. I knew it was true about Spencer not going over well in the industry when Neon had Pablo Larrain send out a message emphasizing that the movie was a fable and to give it a chance, pretty please... Kristen really is looking like Carey Mulligan v2.0 at the moment, with a much weaker movie. Respect made about as much as Judy domestically ($24.2m vs $24.3m) and that's with a pandemic severely holding back dramas for grown-ups. If Respect had come out in 2019, it makes $75-100 million and Hudson hits all the precursors. Maybe she could still get in at Oscar. Some pundits had reported that Gaga and Leto went over really well at a SAG screening for House of Gucci. Plus, SAG skews ppopulist (they have news anchors and influencers voting), it makes sense that the one adult drama viewed as a box office hit did well here. Don't Look Up also benefits from being "important" while huge on Netflix. SAG often goes to the largest, most starry cast, I think it's between it and Gucci for the win.
  9. SAG nominations drop tomorrow but a member of West Side Story's cast already congratulated Mike Faist... Wishful thinking? Are the nominees told in advance? I think SAG nominations have leaked early before...
  10. I don’t know I need six seasons of this, but I like it. The premise was kind of dramatic and the show only dealt with that in a few 90s special episodes, an approach considered cheesy by today's standards. Lou Grant turned into a drama after spinning off from a beloved sitcom. I like it being a separate take on the original show. And of course Carlton would play lacrosse.
  11. There's also the completely random SAG nomination that isn't going to happen anywhere else, either because they're an established "name" (Helen Mirren, Amy Adams for Hillbilly Elegy last year), or the movie was one of the first screeners. Remember Sarah Silverman for I Smile Back? I've been seeing that there were screener issues with SAG for West Side Story, if it has a poor showing that might be why.
  12. The HFPA was still trying to make an "event" out of it last week, it's just that the stars/studios largely declined to participate and their hopes for a livestream fell through. There are links about it in the awards section here. Every year stars would screen their projects for the HFPA and gushingly acknowledge their nominations. Studios would instantly cut ads touting the nominations. Even without a ceremony, Hollywood clearly blanked the Golden Globes this season...until now. If anyone was going to acknowledge their wins, it would be winners who aren't white and from a diverse project so I'm not surprised by the WSS response. The Power of the Dog people probably won't say anything about their Globe wins, there's no upside for them and they don't need the publicity.
  13. This year’s winners were pretty diverse, so how racist can the Globes be? They've done the work, racism solved! /s Even the movie's Twitter account posted about the wins: Definitely got a reluctant vibe from Zegler's tweet about the win and she's seemed pretty eager/excited about awards all season. Will Fox cut adds touting the wins? Stay tuned... Even all the awards media/junkies who know about the HFPA are acting like these results seriously say something about the state of the Oscar race. The average person who watches awards shows for the fashion/jokes may remember there was some sort of scandal with the Globes, or they may just think there was no ceremony because of Covid/Zoom Fatigue.
  14. Kidman! The Globes really love her and Sorkin, so it's not that surprising. These wins are meaningless, but I am now officially pulling for the chaos of Stewart and Gaga both missing with AMPAS... But even when Globes were glitzy and star-studded, the Academy often did its own thing. Oscar nomination voting still doesn't start until the 27th, too long for tonight to have much lingering influence. Of course, it's fine if any award wants to exist for its own sake instead of just trying to predict the Oscars.
  15. The Golden Globes are tweeting their results, then sending out a press release. There was talk of a livestream but it didn't pan out, either. Two years ago they had Ricky Gervais hosting and 18 million viewers. Oh well, nothing lasts forever... *
  16. That's another way the Discourse has distorted the conversation about Ansel in the movie. Even in the WSS threads here, there's a range of opinions on his performance-he's terrible, he's fine, he's great, Tony sucks as a character, he did the best he could. The holds (outside of the No Way Home disruption) for WSS have been good, would that be happening if everyone who saw it thought the leading man was terrible? I guess there's Russell Crowe in Les Miserables but he was supporting. Anyway, reviewers IMO brought their biases with them, it's not the first time.
  17. The anti-Ansel people were very noisy on social media how much box office would that have generated? It just feels like a Very Online thing, where it's a few voices making a lot of noise and many of the posters were never going to see the movie anyway. See how Licorice Pizza had a huge Discourse in online film circles for weeks, when it was just playing in four New York/LA theaters. But even supposing the people boycotting because of Ansel all live in New York/LA and their average ticket would have been $20 each, if it's 250,000 who boycotted West Side Story because of Ansel, that's $5 million more for the total over its lifetime, which still doesn't make it a hit. Maybe everyone who would have seen it except for Ansel would have loved it and told a friend who told a friend, and there would have been a snowball effect... Or, West Side Story is underwhelming at the box office like most of this year's Oscar hopefuls, even in places like Europe, where the "Ansel boycott" is definitely not a thing. Turning Red is also set in Canada, maybe there are concerns about what the theater situation will be in March. It's just unfortunate since there have been signs of life theatrically for animation, and I think the Omicron itself will burn out long before the second weekend of March.
  18. Fox/Disney is probably kicking the themselves that they tried so hard to sell Harry Styles on The Little Mermaid instead of West Side Story... A young star with a huge, active fanbase would have made a big difference for WSS in this landscape. I don't think Ansel significantly hurt the WSS box office, but if Tony or Maria had been played by a famous singer, it would have helped. For sure, it's a glossy crime drama by Ridley Scott, led by a big pop star who relentlessly promoted it and she's getting lots of nominations. Before, it opens to $30-40 million with 3.5x legs. As it is, there's been two holiday periods to boost it and it's still just getting past $50 million. And that's a bright spot! It just shows how much box office expectations have changed for movies that aren't part of a preexisting franchise, horror or don't appeal to young men.
  19. They're just going to post the results online in real time, like a critics group. Is it because a livestream would be considered a broadcast of sorts and in conflict with their NBC contract? Well... Can the HFPA find a way to fail even harder between now and Sunday? Stay tuned...
  20. Netflix’s own numbers are only so reliable and don't necessarily translate to being a box office hit, but... That Most Popular Films chart is for hours viewed in the movie's first 28 days on Netflix. The Irishman is still in fifth by that metric. Netflix also releases weekly Top 10 charts and they do go back far enough to cover their hopefuls for this season. You can see how well they debuted (or didn't, in some cases).
  21. Of course Ridley doubled down on casting someone way too young for Josephine, the man clearly DGAF about his critics.
  22. lmao They should just send out a press release and spare themselves even more embarrassment. Of course, one of the hallmarks of the HFPA has been their total lack of shame...
  23. That was the official story, but this Hollywood Reporter article from 2008 also mentions revenue balancing the current year vs next, and WB freeing up their IMAX schedule so they could relaunch Dark Knight during an awards push (vs having Half Blood Prince out that fall). It's all speculation but Sony may also have a multitude of reasons to move Morbius. Maybe they have internal data showing people would risk Omicron for No Way Home but Morbius, maybe not. Maybe they're hoping Leto gets nominated for an Oscar (his performance in Gucci has been mocked, but has hit some precursors) and they can draft off his awards publicity for Morbius hype.
