28th – Grave of the Fireflies

    484 points – 16 votes ( 1 First, 3 Top 5 , 3 top 10 )

    2013 – Not in top 25

    2014 – 61st

    2016 –32nd

    2018 – 17th

My personal ranking – First – I make no bones about considering this to be the best animated film of all time. Fully understand why it is not for all.

Another Ghibli film based on existing literature and what a film it is. One of the hardest films a person will ever watch, Fireflies is a real gut punch of a film and one that will stick with most people that watch it. To be honest, people not liking it makes sense to me, people thinking it is great makes sense to me, I do find it harder to understand placing it like 70th. Just seems a film that you wouldn’t place in the ‘yeah, pretty good’ bracket.

As far as its list history is concerned, this is a slight drop from the high point of 2018. It is still a good improvement on its first bow of 61st and suggests that it can be here to stay as a film ready to challenge for top 20 each time around.

Never heard of this movie. Something to add to my watchlist. Great contest/thread @chasmmi

  2. Can't speak for 50 years from now but in the near term, Disney will do just fine. They are the best positioned among all the studios to weather the remaining vestiges of this pandemic and the shift to streaming for feature films. Their IP is gold and the spinoffs of spinoffs are minting more money for them (What If, Book of Boba, etc.).

  3. I loved SS. Much better than the original (which I liked). Up there with the Snyder Cut version of JL as the best DCEU film. I wouldn't mind a sequel but one directed by James Gunn. Enjoyed the Taika cameo. Pleasant surprise.

    8.5/10

    Things I liked:

Comedy - dialogue, creature design, deaths
Unashamed introduction to truly ridiculous 'heroes' (Weasel, Shark, etc)
    Special FX were top notch
Action played faithfully grounded to real word physics and natural laws
    Action scenes
    Idris Elba
Characters were fleshed out enough to care

    Cons
Wish we got more Polka Dot man 😄

    101st  – Watership Down

    164 points – 8 votes ( 2 top 10 )

    2013 – Not in Top 25

    2014 – Not in top 100

    2016 –119th

    2018 – 94nd

My personal ranking – Not in top 100 – Just a little too much rabbit on rabbit violence for me.

And now for something completely violent. Watership Down is the final film to miss the top 100 – a slight slip from 2018, and the penultimate film to do so with 8 votes.

This film is famous for its gore and the whole ‘hey let’s mentally scar the children’ that the 80s would then take up as their mantle for animated films and fucking run with.

This also marks a burst of 5 films where I have actually seen all of them, and that is exciting for me at least.

I watched this when I was a kid. The violence shocked me.
