  1. As you may or may not know, Alibaba Holdings recently became one of the highest valued companies overnight. The company and its largest shareholder, Japan's Softbank, now have billions of dollars to spend however they want. Both have expressed interest in Hollywood and movie entertainment in general. Jack Ma, now one of the richest men in the world, wants to make inroads somehow in the film industry. Will the impact be more behind the scenes (example: India's Reliance financing much of Spielberg's projects), a takeover of an American studio, more imports of eastern asian films or will it be mostly overseas investments and projects ("Chinese netflix")? Your predictions.
  2. No Good Deed is a decent home invasion movie that was clearly made better by the 2 leads (Henson and Elba). Their acting and chemistry was a joy to watch. There were a few moments throughout that made me jump and there were a couple of twists. Overall, it's better than what you're usually going to get in September. It's definitely better than the Rotten Tomatoes score (11% overall). B
  3. Reminds me of VCR upconversion to DVD back in the day. Now you have DVD upconversion to 1080p.
  4. I saw a movie on a theater screen that I believe advertised itself as 4K. It was noticeably clearer than the usual, but not worth the premium price.
  5. It's interesting that in none of these examples (I'm adding The American to the list), we see Clooney's character actually die.
  6. The number of superhero movies coming out between 2015-2017 is insane but 1) if there is continuing audience demand and 2) quality is high for most of them, then perhaps saturation isn't so bad. When was the last outright superhero movie dud? Green Lantern and TASM 2 come to mind but they did make back their budget.
  7. This clears up a mystery to me. Way back when this came out, a little service known as Napster was popular. Unfortunately Faces of Death was also popular. I remember downloading a video of a man getting hit by cars exactly like this (same vehicles, same everything). It's obvious to me now that someone went in and replaced Brad Pitt with a different person and uploaded the video. I never saw Meet Joe Black but I did buy a ticket for it but that was only to see the Phantom Menace preview. I left right after that.
  8. I totally forgot about Perfect Storm. Although he could have found an air pocket in the boat and then swam to the surface and gotten rescued....maybe?
  9. The problem I see down the road are the ISPs like Comcast and Verizon throttling heavy 4K users. They are already limiting bandwidth for Netflix power users. You also have to deal with their data caps.
  10. Don't expect 8K to be popular until the 2030s. We're still 5 years away from 4K cable broadcasts.
  11. It's amazing that 20 years later, that sentiment is still around. $30 million is still seen as a bar for success. That was the case in the 90s too.
  12. I'm trying to think of a movie where his character dies....
  13. That's exactly what's happened with both the Dark Tower and The Stand projects. They were either shelved, changed hands, or in limbo. Yes, eventually it may happen but it's not an inevitability. Looks like The Stand may happen. We shall see how that turns out which brings me to your second point. You're probably being sarcastic but of course I know they don't have to be page by page. My point is that absent MAJOR finagling and revisions, I don't see how certain parts can be filmed. Doesn't mean they won't figure it out (see Lord of the Rings).
  14. Glad they're remaking this classic. I know it's early but I see Timur as this generation's Ridley Scott (meshing unique visuals with decent storytelling).
  15. Ghostbusters (saw it in theaters)
  16. Interesting indeed, although he is attached to the Metal Gear Solid movie so I guess he has a coolness factor to him.
  17. Saw this in theaters. I remember seeing a blooper during the movie though. Someone's finger (boom mike operator?) briefly appeared on screen! I cannot believe I didn't say Neverending Story. I saw Star Wars relatively late so this was my Star Wars. It had a huge impact on my love for movies. I remember vividly my first time watching it and still recall the fear I had as Atreyu walked through the gates.
