  1. The Descendants Feb 17, 2012 / 6:20 PM, Greenbelt 3, Makati City, Philippines 90% full (300-400 seats) The trailers were already airing when I entered the cinema and these are the ones I was able to see Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Jack and Jill - some laughs My Week with Marilyn This is War - some laughs The movie: The story felt a little dry but in a way I like the simplicity of it all and that it's really all about pain. I love the rapport between George Clooney and Shailene Woodley, I like their scenes together. This is a good performance from Clooney but I don't think it's worthy of an Oscar. The crowd enjoyed Matt's confrontation with his wife's other man and they were very receptive as well of Sid's stoned jokes. All in all, it's a fine movie but it's nowhere near Payne's best. B-
  2. BOM updated the Philippines Box Office index but it's weird because now Underworld Awakening only grossed $755,178. I'll post it later when they fix this mistake already
  3. That's the Rotten Tomatoes effect I guess. Not that it's bad if you use that as your movie watching guide but sometimes it's weird how people passionately hate a movie they haven't seen just because it's rated "rotten"
  4. Just came home from Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance press screening, not my kind of movie but it has amazing visuals and Nicholas Cage is a pleasure to watch.Hugo and The Descendants opened today and they are sadly flopping in the cinema I was at earlier
  5. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Press Screening (Feb 15. 2012) 8 pm, Glorietta, Makati Philippines 95% full (400-500 seats) - The press screening was co-organized by a motorcycle magazine here so there were a lot of riders/bikers in the crowd Trailers: Battleship - some wows and "it's like Transformers" comments Jack The Giant Killer - No reaction The Dark Knigh Rises - no reaction The Hobbit - some chatter Titanic 3D - some chatter, some were surprised to see this trailer Ice Age 4 short - lots of laughter The movie This is not my kind of movie but it has amazing visuals. The story's a little darker than the previous and there were some creepy moments. Nicolas Cage is entertaining the in the crazy insane way and the crowd laughed a lot with some of his dialogues and antics. Saw this in 3D and it was OK but nothing amazing. C+
  6. The visuals are amazing! I hope they can earn good OS. The high production budget is actually justified
  7. Saw Hugo last night during the press screening, loved it! Kayumanggi, watch this one!
  8. Hugo Press Screening 7:30 PM, Resorts World Manila, Philippines 80% full (300 seats) Trailers: Battleship - some chatter and a lady shouted "Hey that's Rihanna!" Snow White and The Huntsman - no reaction Madagascar 3 - laughs The Lorax - laughs The movie. Definitely worth the wait. The production design is so amazing and it made me understand why the production budget was so high for this (although I hope they could have cut cost to 100 mil). The film started a little slow but when it got to the George Meiles' past part was so mesmerizing. I consider myself a casual movie fan but after watching this one I want to learn more about the history of films. I got teary eyed on some scenes. The audience was very receptive as well (lots of "wows" in the amazing visual sequences and also you could feel h I think this movie is not for kids below 10 or have short attention span as there was one kid (around 7) who was whining to her parents but good thing the parents made her shut up. There was this other who's reacting so loudly but she was inquisitive and was interested with the black and white films featured so it was slightly amusing. The 3D was immersive I must say. Will watch this again A+
  9. A silent film will always be a tough sell in this day and age
  10. The Scary Movie franchise did well here but others I don't think so. I'm sure Breaking Wind will flop here. While I don't think Hugo and The Descendants will do big business here but I think they'll earn just good enough, marketing has been good for both. But we have a local romcom out as well which will likely win the box office.
  11. Also out this week alongside Hugo and The Descendants is a Twilight: Breaking Dawn spoof movie Breaking Wind which looks so awful in the trailer. So annoying that we get crap like that here
  12. Yeah The Muppets' OS performance is so disappointing. Don't kids appreciate puppets anymore? Or traditional animation for that matter. Winnie the Pooh was released here in 2 cinemas only
  13. Yeah I think Paramount was expecting Footloose to breakout big time but it fizzled although it's not a disastrous flop. I guess if Zac Efron or even that Gossip Girl dude was the lead star it would have more overseas potentialWe always get the major animated and children's flicks here so The Muppet should be in theaters Even Lion King 3D was shown here and Beauty and The Beast 3D is coming out this month as well.Coriolanus was shown here a couple of weeks ago and it flopped, even J. Edgar flopped as well. I guesss that would be the case for The Help too if it was shown here. The long run time is not appealing to the theaters as well.
  14. The Help has always been a tough sell, a period drama is not something that the audience here would flock to but I was thinking the Oscar buzz would get it here even if in limited screens only (The King's Speech last year was shown here in May in 3 cinemas only). A lot of "Oscar" movies are out this month (Hugo, The Descendants, War Horse, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and My Week with Marilyn). For a time The Help was scheduled for a January release but was cancelled. The Muppets is puzzling to me if it is indeed true that it won't be screened here. It's a kids movie so there's an audience for that here. I just hope that person was mistaken and he didn't see that particular movie on the record stores haha. But if it's indeed true then I guess maybe Disney itself decided not tor release it here anymore (and some other small markets I assume) since it's doing poorly overseas anyway :(Footloose was scheduled for an October release last year but got pulled out, I think the underwhelming box office domestically made Paramount think otherwise to expand its overseas rollout. Too bad I wanted to see this one as well since I'm sucker for dance flicks
  15. Just saw The Help already available on original home video. I was hoping it would actually be released here with the Oscar buzz. Someone also told me The Muppets is on original home video as well as well and that sucks because I've been waiting to see this one in theaters. And rhe Footloose remake will also be going straight to video since the distributor already cancelled the plan to screen the movie this month
  16. Journey 2 had the most screens plus 3D and IMAX on its side so most really underestimated its chance to do well on OW
  17. Man! Why this didn't happened during Thanksgiving weekend last year? Would love to see all 3 family movies (The Muppets, Hugo and Arhtur Christmas) broke outAmazing for Journey 2 since almost all predicted it to perform below 20 million
  18. I wish we had this kind of weekend during The Mupperts-Hugo-Arthur Christmas OW. Oh well
  19. CinemaScore grades: 'The Vow' - B, 'Safe House' and 'Journey 2' both A-I thought The Vow would easily get an A but I guess the men who watched it (the dates) dragged the score down
  20. In 2002 when Spider-Man 1 broke the 100 million OW barrier but back then I didn't know how to use the Internet (I became Internet literate in 2004 when I entered college ) so I was just relying on newspapers and a local radio show that discusses the top 10 box office every week.Interesting though I only discovered BOM forums during its last few months of existence haha. I just check out BOM for the reports and the charts
  21. Looks like this is the kind of week where we won't know what film tops the weekend until the actuals come in. I underestimated The Vow, I know it will do well but I was thinking around 25 mil OW but this impressive. In my country it did well on its opening day last night, sold out screenings! And wow at Safe House. Denzel Washington is a box office star indeed!
  22. Really? They didn't have faith on this one? Well romantic movies do well here. Our local mainstream movies are 80% about romance., the rest are horror or comedies
  23. We were supposed to watch The Vow last night but wow sold out! What more on Valentines? Rachel McAdams is a draw for this kind of suff. Could win the box office easily
