  1. I think Argo is rated R because of the language especially how F*ck yourself is kinda like the movie's tagline already lol. Glad with the Saturday increase! Go Argo! Woot!Frankenweenie :(HT crosses 100 million and Taken 2 will cross that landmark in a few days.
  2. Long lines for This Guy's In Love With You Mare at the theater I went to earlier. Star Cinema reported that they crossed 100 million in 5 days already. Looks like The Mistress is not a lock yet for the top local film of the year.
  3. Perks of Being a Wallflowe should have been a wide release from the get-go or at least had a release pattern like Pitch Perfect
  4. Argo 8 PM (advanced screening) Glorietta, Makati City, Philippines 98% full (~400 seats) Trailers: Epic - laughs on the last part Man of Steel - chatter Great Gatsby - no reaction Trouble with a Curve - laughs with the Dr. Phil Joke Life of Pi - mostly no reaction except for one lady loudly exclaiming LIFE OF PI! The Croods - some chatter The Three Stooges - HUGE laughs The Hobbit - some chatter Gangster Squad - some chatter, this trailer still had the shooting in the theater scene but it was shortened. The movie WOW! A great mix of drama, light humor and suspense! Arkin is a scene stealer, the crowd loved him! The last act of the film is so suspenseful! You could feel the tense atmosphere and the crowd was very responsive as well. Loud cheering and clapping The end credits where they showed the pictures of the real survivors got a good response because 3 of them are splitting images of their real-life counterpart. Lots of great exit chatter One of the best film I've seen this year. I hope it will do well in the box office A

  6. ^ I know right? Wish it had a wider release. I've never seen a movie in any Robinsons cinemas. It's only SM or Ayala cinemas for me. And Festival Mall in Alabang sometimes

  8. $50 million for Odd Life of Timothy Green. Who would have though it would get a 5 (rounded up) multiplier? If that movie had better critical reception maybe it could have gross even more. I do wonder if Disney has plans to release it overseas
  9. Anyway, really glad we had two back to back great weekends in the box office now after 4 weeks of disappointing ticket sales. I hope it continues until the end of the year
  10. I still don't understand why it wasn't a wide release from the get-go, the material is not obscure and it has star appeal. I hope WOM will keep it afloat. Maybe Summit is hoping for some awards buzz? I would love that but realistically speaking, it's really a long shot but who knows, right?
  11. Surprised to see Nemo 3D still in the top 10. So where will this end up? Is it safe to say Monsters, Inc 3D rerelease will earn lower? The trio of Trouble with a Curve, End of Watch and House At End of Street still seated right next to each other. Hotel Transylvania's hold is great which means bad business for Frankenweenie
  12. Coming of age stories are dime a dozen from books to TV shows and most especially movies. With a plethora of growing up stories out there, it really is a tall order for one to stand out. One might dismiss The Perks of Being a Wallflower as one of those generic tales but this movie takes a familiar story to a whole new direction thanks to strong characterization and heartfelt commitment to the material. Set in the early 90s, Charlie (Logan Lerman) is a troubled kid entering his first day in high school. He never stood out before and he believes that things will stay the same that is until he meets seniors Patrick (Ezra Miller) and Sam (Emma Watson). Together with Patrick and Sam, Charlie discovers the joys and pains of growing up and at the same time wrestling with the memories of his haunted past. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is adapted to the big screen by the novel's author Stephen Chbosky and one can see how this material is very important to him. He handles the adaptation with so much care and eye for detail which I believe will please most fans of the book. The novel is written in epistolary form wherein Charlie tells his story through writing letters to an anonymous person. Adapting that format to the big screen made it look like it's just a gimmick to have a voice over narration but the script and Lerman's performance carries it through. Still, there are in things in the novel that were left out (For example, Charlie's sister has a smaller role) but overall the movie fully captures the novel's tone and atmosphere. The story is very accessible even for those who haven't read the source material. The structure is basically simple and something that most people could relate to. It really is all about growing up and the pain and pleasure that comes along with it. What makes The Perks of Being a Wallflower special is that the movie does not pass judgment and just lets you in to the world of these kids who are young, adventurous and full of potential yet so unfocused and fragile. It does not escape the cliches known to this genre but the characters are fascinating and genuine that watching their journey is so engrossing to watch. Committed performances from the cast strengthen the movie even more. Lerman, in particular, fully embodied Charlie delivering a nuanced but knockout performance. He fully captures the vulnerability of a troubled teen like Charlie. He gets the small details right, making Charlie a well-developed character that you just couldn't help but be draw on to. Watson is a playing a totally different character from the role that made her famous and she nails it. Miller is so charismatic, funny and sweet that one would not think that he played a terrifying character in We Need to Talk About Kevin so effectively a year ago. The Perks of Being a Wallflower does not tell anything new or groundbreaking about youth issues but what it does best is showing the serious side of being a teenager with so much sensibility and sincerity. It's a journey that one has seen (and experienced in one way or another) but this movie reminds us that no matter how crazy those years have been, it's all worth it. 9/10
  13. There's also a great documentary out in select theaters right now Give Up Tomorrow. We rarely (if at all) get documentaries in theaters here so this got me interested and it's about actually a murder case here in the Philippines. It's so compelling and highly recommend it
  14. Hotel Transylvania is very wholesome though, the "monsters" do cute stuff and all so it was definitely not dark unlike Frankenweenie. Doing it in black and white seals the deal since most kids like colorful animation.

  16. Sad for Frankenweenie but expected. Hotel Transylvania will likely be the 1st choice for families. I hope it will appeal to the adult crowd though so it can have legs
  17. ^ Star Cinema reported that the movie already earned 300 million pesos including the international screenings and as per BOM it already earned 230 million pesos as of Sept. 30, so 70 million pesos overseas? So that's around $2.9 million. But of course we should take their press releases with a grain of salt though but I really think it did well in the Filipino audience overseas since ABS CBN's TFC has a wide reach and I always give them credit for impressive marketing of their products

  20. Taken 2 8 PM (advanced screening) Glorietta, Makati City, Philippines 100% full (~400 seats) Trailers: Man of Steel - some chatter Epic - laughs on the last part Great Gatsby - no reaction Trouble with a Curve - no reaction Life of Pi - some chatter (this is my first time to see the trailer in the big screen and it was lovely!) Argo - no reactions The Three Stooges - lots of laughs The Hobbit - some chatter The movie: Crowd loves Liam Neeson. During his first few scenes people were already responding well with some of his lines and how overprotective he is with his daughter and there's one setpiece involving shoelaces, a map and a grenade the brought the house down. The beginning was actually quite promising but it became a generic action flick with generic chases and action fights which is really disappointing. The final showdowns with the villains were underwhelming. Overall, it's pretty enjoyable but it's just not as fun as the first one. C+
