Jumanji and Rampage were pretty backloaded with the uneven Thursday to Friday jumps for big event action pics. I think the mediocre numbers are from the movie itself when comparing with the openings of Tomb Raider, Maze Runner and Pacific Rim 2. Having Dwayne Johnson in the film I think is just made the movie what it is. The concept/vision is what sells these action movies and the Rampage concept vs Skyscraper concept vs Mission Impossible concept did not seem to favor Skyscraper this time around. If it was made 5 years from now, or 25 years ago, maybe it would be written differently. One word action titles have always had their own world and the large budget in Skyscraper shows the confidence they have in these pictures despite so many flops.

boxofficeguru does a pretty good job with the write ups in the archives. they don't store their forecast articles, but they usually show OW predictions at the end of the article. Sometimes if something like War/Apes did mediocre with 55m, they will write it as a decent opening etc. at the bottom it will mention 'way off from the overoptimistic prediction of 80m'.

The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

are presales on Mamma Mia 2 suggesting something over 30 million OW? -
I bet Skyscraper could get a sequel with half the budget and more action and go direct to video in the U.S., but a light release overseas. Hollow Man 2 did well in that deparment. First one was like a 100 million box office bomb with a big opening weekend for is time, a visual effect nomination. Second one direct to video.

I thought Skyscraper was pretty good. Most of it actually caught me by surprise. Neve Campbell is in it. Hotel Transylvania 3 was good, but I have not seen the first two. Both movies threw stuff at the screen and it was pretty colorful and entertaining, but I think if you were reviewing them like Ratatouille, maybe the wrong crunch on a piece of something and the review is soiled rotten. Skyscraper - (B-)82% Hotel Transylvania 3 - (C+)77% Look for all these movies to hold well, -25% in the coming weeks up against Mi6 and for Mi6 to tank with 40 OW and spread the wealth among other movies like Incredibles, Ant-Man, and Jurassic World

Ahhh! they cancelled that rub and tug film! I encourage anyone working in the sex industry to fire their bosses and work for themselves.

$2,600,000 preview for Hotel 3 w/o the additional 1.2 advanced previews $1,950,000 preview for Skyscraper w/o super sneaks (I think) 2,950 locations from Skyscraper 3,276 from Hotel 3 Thursday @ 5pm + $9.16 avg. ticket price and purchases per location w/ this price. Hotel Transylvania 3 - ($2,600,000) divided amongst 3,276 theaters divided amongst avg. increment value/purchase of $9.16. ($2.6x10^6)(1/3,276 location)(1/9.16 purchase) = 86.6 purchase/location ~ 87 Skyscraper - ($1.95x10^6)/((3,276)(9.16)) = 72 purchases per location 87 purchases - HT3 71 purchases - Sky 4x the per theater average of Hotel 3 from Thursday to Friday would give (87/location)(4)($9.16)(4,267 location) = 13.6. w/ previews being 2.6 + 1.2, that is 17.4 OD. Would need a 19% from true Friday to Saturday to get to 16.2 Saturday. A casual 22.5% drop on Sunday makes 12.6 Sunday, 46.2. I think it will go between 3.5-4x previews, but 50 could be there too. If Skyscraper goes from 71 purchases Thursday to an amazing 210 purchases Friday 2.96x, that would make a full OD of $9.225m including previews. (7.275 minus previews) A 19% increase on Saturday to 250 purchase increments of value/3,762 location makes 8.66m, and 22.5% drop 6.71 Sunday, 24.6 full weekend. Ant-Man flopped on Wednesday and Thursday, so anything could happen.
