Happy to say I contributed to that Beyond number yesterday. I hate I waited to see it so long, thought it was probably the funnest movie I've seen all summer. It should be getting more love but I sadly think after the mediocre reception of the second people just didn't care. Added to the fact that nothing this summer has really felt like a MUST SEE. Still, I thought it was really great.
Also some huge holds for Lights Out. That's going to be a huge hit for New Line.

i kind of fall in this line of thinking too, and that's coming from someone who was a supporter of the film. Everyone keeps saying it's not gonna hit 150 or 200 or 250 over the past few weeks but I'm very hesitant to say that if there wasn't a crowd who felt like there was something to prove (either for or against the justification for it) it could have opened to between 25/30 and puttered to a 75 million finish. I think the controversy in the end helped it was just always a tough sell and in the end a mediocre product.

even as a fan of the series, i totally agree. I'm guessing a huge chunk of it is salary? i've always been curious about the cost of cgi, when films like chronicle can be produced vs something 150 plus.

what are we thinking for SS. seems kind of like the perfect storm at this point and i honestly wouldn't be surprised to see it come in between 125 and 140. hope its quality and can put the DC world back on track.

your wife is my kind of gal. i went opening day as well in 2010 and have been back 3 times since. and you're right, the love for it only grows as you get older. my friends have 3 kids, 8, 5, and 2, and i had to watch them last Saturday night. When the 2 year old knocked out the other 3 of us watched sorcerers stone (because their mom just let them read the first book recently) and it was absolute magic watching them devour it.

yeah but the potter fan base doesn't feel this AT ALL. we are just so stoked to have another movie in the same universe. i can see where you're coming from and maybe this will have less GA appeal, but if 8 films taught us anything its that the potter fanbase is EXTREMELY consistent, and every single potter fan i know (and its A LOT) are unbelievably excited for this. It needs good reviews to avoid the Hobbit route where each film decreased but for me I feel like its a lock for 200. I think the brand is that strong.

Saw Lights Out last night. Overall a good and creepy little horror film. Maria Bellos character was major lolz but it was effective and fun. Also appreciated the short run time. Our independent theater here has been closed all year for renovations and it reopened today. They're showing a midnight showing of Green Room and I think I'm gonna check it out, anyone catch that?

The initial interest will be REALLY big for this, previews and Friday IMO, should push 20. The question is overall quality. I've always been nervous about the cast (sans Banks and Cranston) but some of these initial looks have just been cheesy. It could have an atrocious multiplier that weekend and overall. If its actually a good start to what I'm assuming is a planned franchise I think 150 is definitely a realistic outcome.

100% accurate. The first half is really solid and then it goes downhill before the train wreck (pun intended) that is the 'finale'. I've tried to be unbiased about the film because on paper it looks really good but unless they change the source material i don't see it having a lot of longevity. It's compared to Gone Girl and rightfully so except Gone Girl was better and more fully realized.

Ghostbusters had a HUGE hole to climb out of over the past 6 months and I think in the face of the PR nightmare and also bad marketing from the studio itself this is a solid result. As someone else said this could have EASILY been this year's F4, had it been a trash film. The studio should have done everything in their power to keep the budget closer to 100 since they knew China would be a no go and this opening would look a LOT better.
The real winners of the summer are The Purge and The Conjuring 2. 150 WW and 300 WW on respective budgets of 10 and 40 million is FANTASTIC. Especially considering the Purge is on its third entry and if you count Annabelle, so is TC. It doesn't hurt that they're also quality movies, particularly TC2 which I thought was one of the most frightening films I'd seen in years. Bodes very well for Lights Out next weekend.

Ghostbusters at 10:05 was maybe 10% full. Sadly I think that's being generous and this is one of Nashville's most popular theaters.
I would give it a C+ or a B-, I haven't decided. The script was honestly VERY weak, and the cameos felt incredibly forced to me but in the end McKinnon saved it. The cast in general could really do something great if they have the right material this just wasn't it. It's not terrible by any means, it's just the only thing worse. Mediocre.

I hope it can hit 50. Seeing it tonight but after the ridiculous and sexist shit storm it went through I just want it find some kind of success. If it hypothetically were to hit 50/140 or so, I hope the studio would have enough faith to try a sequel knowing the volatility has mostly subsided and let it have a fair start at making a franchise.

so insanely pumped for this. definitely most stoked for this over any holiday release (and yeah that includes rogue one). Those are my dream leads with a director coming off one of my favorite films in years. Also crazy but it trended for most of the day on Twitter in the US and that's something usually on Marvel/DC films do. Awareness is high.

i don't think i would. i mean it was huge I'm not saying it wasn't but frozen literally upended the kids market. just coming from the music business side, what that soundtrack did was INSANE. it's run was just as if not more impressive than the films. Then add in the merchandising and the fact that EVERY single one of my friend's daughters worse anna and elsa costumes that year I just think it was in a very, very rare league. And just know I LOVED Zootopia, but I don't think it's cultural impact is even in the same discussion as Zoo.

Also pretty solid for Mike and Dave. Not sure how strong its weekend IM will be (teen comedies tend to crash and burn on Saturday in the summer) but it's promising so far.

FINALLY got to catch SS this afternoon. Oi. I D K. Overall I think it's a hot mess. Narratively it's kind of insane and not in a good way. The villain is one of the weirdest approaches I've ever seen a comic book adaptation take. Whoever cut the trailer deserves a damn Oscar because they were able to make a trailer for a movie that didn't exist. All this being said, I thought parts of it WERE fun. Margot Robbie kicks ass. She's a knockout and honestly I thought Will Smith really committed to this. I think I would give it a C/C+. It's not as awful as I was expecting but I'm confused as hell as to how they thought this was going to work with the narrative they built.
