  1. Even though the girl probably couldn't help it, is it really fair that maybe 200-300 other paying customers have their experience and money wasted because one person is laughing so loud they can't hear the film properly? The appropriate action would have been to ask the parent/guardian to have her try keep it down as it is disturbing other guests. If she didn't then asking them to leave was the right thing to do. One person, disabled or not, shouldn't be allowed to ruin the film for other paying customers.
  2. The show was very average. I like Seth a lot and he's a great host on something like a Comedy Central roast but he didn't work at all last night. The opening was just plain strange. It's one of the few times where i've read one of Nikki's live snarks and thought she had it right. There was a song about boobs sung by a gay mens choir. Who sat there and thought it would be a good idea at the oscars for that to happen? They then followed that up with the even stranger dancing sections, which was an unbelievably obvious ploy to showcase some youngsters to the audience. That's fine but to have them tap dancing? Hardly going to send the kids wild. The bit with Shatner just dragged on and on. Seemed more like an out-take from the Charlie Sheen roast. His jokes were pretty hit and miss too. For every decent one there were two that flopped. He wasn't as edgy as Gervais nor as funny as Fey & Poehler. A definite step up from Franco/Hathaway but I can't see him coming back anytime soon. The awards itself pretty much across the board went as predicted. There was no shock moment. I was surprised QT won his second tonight. No doubt he deserves a second but IB was a much better script. Waltz winning was a bit surprising considering he only won a couple of years ago. Personally I thought PSH gave the best supporting performance of the year, Waltz was essentially the lead. DDL gave the funniest speech I've ever seen him do, it was a nice change as he usually seems quite serious. He was always going to win though, he could easily have 4 best actor gongs as he was fantastic as Bill the Butcher. I'm glad Anne Hathaway won, for two reasons. 1. She gave the best supporting performance of the year, I dreamed a Dream gave me goosebumps and i still listen to her rendition every other day. And 2. So I don't have to watch her give one more "Is this really happening, I'm so overwhelmed!" performance when accepting an award. BOOO that Jennifer Lawrence won. I'm sure the middle aged fanboys on here all rushed out of their seats to help her up after she face planted into the stairs. Which was my personal pick for best moment of the night. Why is she so popular? Hunger Games was an average flick and I've not seen Amour but Chastain put in a better performance and single handedly carried ZD30. Plus, she looked about 30 times better than JLaw. Anyone else notice she had a droopy left eye when she went up to present? Li taking best Director was not a shock but a deserved win nontheless. Anyone who transforms an 'unfilmable' book and turns it into a critical and commercial success deserves the win. Lincoln was fine, but there was nothing special about it. Everyone involved with the film has produced better work in the past, even DDL. And Best Picture deservedly went to Argo. Out of the films I've seen it was the best picture of the year for me. Tense, dramatic and well acted. Affleck keeps rising and it's hard to root against him and Clooney.
  3. I don't think in five years time anyone will be calling a 2012 film a 'classic'. There was a lot of solid films but nothing truly stood out as being a masterpiece. 1994 had Pulp Fiction & Shawshank - Two films in my top 3. So that is the clear winner in my eyes. Forrest Gump is also up there.
  4. No, but it has the most black main characters. Which is why it won.
  5. Drops will be heavier this week i imagine. The snow had a big effect on the weekend previous to this one.
  6. The Hunger Games - Nowhere near worth all the hype. A fairly standard teenie bopper action flick. The Avengers - Sure it was good but it was just unspectacular Marvel as usual. I can't particularly remember that much from it that stuck out as being special.Lincoln - Technically very well made but there was nothing there to make me think that it was the best movie of 2012. Lots of courtroom blah blah with Tommy Lee laying some 19th century burns.Skyfall - Ranks way below Casino Royale for me. That film had fantastic and memorable action scenes, Skyfall doesn't and Bardem's villain was too camp.
  7. Just finished watching it and in all honesty it's one of those 'Oscar' films that comes along and seemingly does everything right. The acting, directing, the script...all good but the film itself just failed to wow me. Everyone involved in the film has produced better work at another time and much like Oscar winner 'The Artist' i found myself thinking this is another (probable) BP winner that i don't really see what all the fuss is about.Technically the film is solid but there's nothing in this movie to suggest it's going to be a classic re-watched for years to come.7/10
  8. January tends to be a hotbed for terrible horror's but this one had to be one of the worst in recent memory, mostly because of the wasted potential. They didn't go down the obvious reboot scenario like they could have done and instead chose to produce a sequel to the original, which has to be commended at least. The opening does a good job of showing a new audience the events that take place in the first film during the credits but as soon as the new footage comes in to play things turn sour. Taking it from the beginning we automatically have a problem as 'the family' are portrayed as being these innocents who are willing to comply with the police but are cruelly killed by clichéd gun wielding Texans. The family are supposed to be evil, Leatherface is supposed to be a giant chainsaw wielding behemoth that chops down whatever gets in his way. Do not start the film by trying to get the audience to sympathise with them. I honestly can't believe Hooper didn't have a problem with this. Going on from there we are introduced to the main actors, and i use the term actors very loosely. Alexandra Daddario is our heroin and her low cut tops provide the greatest enjoyment you will find in the movie, she is extremely good looking without having that slutty look like the other female has. They are joined by one of the Backstreet Boys and a singer who I've never heard of. Hopefully his singing isn't as bad as his acting. They also meet a hitch-hiker who just happens to be a part time body-builder by the looks of it. Now that we have been introduced to these characters the film spends around 20 minutes making the audience hate them. The body builder is a thief, then gets killed. The slut and the singer get it on in the haystacks, and then they get killed too. The poor Backstreet boy doesn't actually seem like that bad a guy but they must have decided that killing him off early was easier than giving him any sort of character development. So with around half an hour left the only person left really is poor Alexandra, whom if she was played by a chubby girl i would have liked as little as i did the other characters. But the film still hadn't finished trying to make me hate her as she then goes on to make several obvious and ridiculous decisions. There really are so many problems with the movie that it's hard to believe anyone could have enjoyed it as a whole. The 3D is pure garbage, but the film was ONLY showing in 3D at my cinema so i was limited in my options. The dialogue is laughable, after the cop goes down into the basement and shoots the girl in the freezer the mayor saying "Don't worry it didn't happen" probably got the biggest laugh of the night. But the biggest travesty of all in the film is that Leatherface just is not scary at all, in fact they try and humanise him as much as possible and in the end, almost make him a sort of anti-hero. The scene at the end where Leatherface is getting beaten by the hick mayor marks a new low for the franchise. No longer is Leatherface this unstoppable force but he is seen rather as a bit of a wimp easily taken down by this bloated baldy. The whole cousin storyline is again, such a stupid plot device. This girl finds out her estranged family, who were cannibals, were burnt by the townspeople so now she's happy to feed the human skin wearing drag cousin living downstairs for the rest of her days? Really? Another huge flaw which has been mentioned often is the timescale these guys are working on. If we're assuming the events of the first film took place in 1974 then surely the movie is meant to take place around 20 years later... Only the kids listen to a song that came out in 2012 on the radio, dress in a relatively modern way, oh and one of the cops videos the crime scene on his phone. Which either means that all of those things were available in the mid 90's, or the film takes place in 2012 and Alexandra Daddario is playing a 38 year old, which would put Leatherface in his 60/70's? There really is just nothing to recommend about the movie as you can just wait for Percy Jackson 2 if you're desperate to look at Daddario on the big screen. 4/10
  9. Texas Chainsaw 3D 21:15 Norwich Odeon Attendance: Pretty much Sold out (attendant had to come in to find seats for people) Trailers: Mama - Bit of chatter Django UnchaIned - Some laughs Gangster Squad - Mixed reviews have put me off it The Film: Pretty much pure garbage from start to finish. My expectations were low going in due to the negative press it's received but the film turned out to be truly one of the worst horrors of the past few years. The faults with the film are endless but here is a glimpse of the most glaring issues. No one can act - Whilst it's nice that all the kids look like they're straight out of an Abercrombie and Fitch catalogue the lack of acting ability is painfully obvious. I'm willing to give Alexandra Daddario another chance (for obvious reasons) but the rest of the cast, in it's entirety, lack any sort of talent in portraying emotions. Even the painfully awful script can't be entirely blamed for how bad they are. The Script - Awful dialogue mixed with a paper thin plot. Almost everything that happens in the film is so obvious you'll be able to guess the next scene well in advance. The 3D- Oh...there really isn't much in 3D. Another reason why 3D needs to go away now. Overall, i couldn't recommend the film to anybody, horror fan or not. 4/10
  10. I've seen 5 movies in the cinema on a single day quite a few times back when i had a cinema pass and saw pretty much everything that came out. I'd usually get to the cinema at around 10am and not get out until 10pm.At home i remember one summer i would stay up all night watching films and go to bed around 8am. I must have managed about 6 in a 24 hour period. The only film i can remember from those marathons is Untraceable for some reason.
  11. When seeing the film on opening day i remember leaving the theatre feeling a bit disappointed, i had liked the film but it had failed to live up to the vast expectations I'd had over the previous four years since TDK became one of my favourite films. After watching it again for a second time, this time on blu-ray (Which looks fantastic, the IMAX scenes in particular are breathtaking), i felt a lot more satisfied with the way the film turned out, sure it's not perfect but it is still a good finale to one of the great cinema trilogies. The main differences upon a second viewing were that the film didn't seem to drag as much this time around. I didn't feel myself longing for more action during the opening and prison scenes as i had in the cinema. Knowing what was going to happen allowed me to sit back and enjoy the film more instead of waiting for a big 'spectacle' like i did in the cinema. Another great benefit was that i was able to understand Bane's voice a lot easier at home than i did in the cinema, which was obviously beneficial as he does have several great lines. Some problems i had first time round persisted though. The revelation of Talia and Bane's sudden turn into a weeping mess still irked me as he could have gone out in a much more epic and grand battle rather than being shot by Catwoman and treated somewhat as an afterthought. I also noticed a pretty glaring editing era as when Batman returns to Gotham he asks Gordon on the Ice where Bane is hiding Talia even though in the previous scene he is with her and Lucious. There is also a lot of cool looking scenes that are logistically quite stupid. Like the sweeping shot of Batman looking over Gotham on top of a spire and why when Gotham had hours to spare he thought it was necessary to create a giant Bat symbol made out of fire on top of the bridge.Overall though, the film is big bold and still very entertaining. It's just a double edged sword for Nolan that after TDK and Inception his films are expected to be of such a high standard now that if they fall even a little bit short then people are going to be left disappointed.8/10
  12. Heigl's picture can be seen on the wall of their house in one scene. It was okay, mildly funny in parts but there was way too much packed in that didn't need to be there, a problem Apatow's films usually have. Megan Fox was surprisingly one of the better/funnier characters in the film but the whole store sub-plot was completely unnecessary, 10-15 minutes could have been edited out right there. The main problem is that the story as a whole just isn't as engaging as the baby story in Knocked up and whilst Ben was a genuinely funny and likeable character (I didn't care for Alison), Peter isn't as funny or as interesting in this film, mainly because Mann is the centre piece here. As someone else mentioned, the financial problems they have in the film don't really resonate with the audience because they live in a huge house, drive a BMW and Peter has enough money to have loaned his Dad $80,000. If they were in that horrible of a situation then the $30,000 sign in his office would have been the first thing to go, surely? If you like Apatow films then it's probably worth a rental when it's out of theatres but when the funniest part of the film is a bit of improv from Melissa Mccarthy in the credits then you know you haven't exactly watched a classic.6/10
  13. There aren't any spoilers or plot points included in the review, just general comments about what i thought of the film
  14. Film: Skyfall Time: 22:30 Capacity: 30% (300+ seater) Trailers: Jack Reacher Les Miserables Life of Pi The Hobbit The Film: Keeping it brief, don't go in expecting a masterpiece. The current RT score is only going to serve to over-hype the film and leave people dissapointed. It's better than QOS but it's a fair way off the quality of Casino Royale. All of the performances are solid, especially those of Craig, Dench and Bardem and the script has a good number of witty one liners. There are quite a few instances of poor effects in background shots, most notably in the opening scene, which was slightly off putting. Whilst none of the effects are particularly bad i found the majority to be quite noticeably CGI which i considered to be a bit poor considering the cost of the movie and the fact that a lot were just generic explosions that have looked so much better in other films. None of the action scenes have really struck me as being very memorable, unlike the car flip/opening sequence in CR. With the exception of the introduction of Bardem's villain I can't imagine much of the movie will stay in my memory for very long which again is another sign that it was serviceable entertainment rather than something special. To conclude, the film is fine, forgettable entertainment but don't let the early reviews fool you into thinking it's going to be the second coming of cinema, it isn't. 7/10
  15. Did Gotham attribute Bruce's 'death' as being collateral during Banes takeover? Otherwise it would seem pretty obvious to everyone that he was Batman if they both had died at the same time. Also i know Nolan was never going to mention the Joker but wouldn't he have been roaming around Gotham too with all the chaos going on? Even if he was in Arkham someone would have broke him out?
  16. Minimum wage in the U.K is £6.08 ($9.49) per hour for persons aged over 21.
  17. Having the doors locked seems like a bit of a health hazard tbh. What if someone in the screen already has a weapon, or if theres a fire? Also i don't see why people are saying WB should donate a percentage of the films gross to the victims. They have absolutely nothing to do with what happened and they also bear no responsibility.
  18. Because everyone thought he was dead. The big 'reveal' was when those two workers told Lucious that a software patch had fixed the auto pilot six months ago. Lucious asked who authorised that and they said Bruce Wayne.Bruce had done what Alfred wanted him to do, to live a life away from Gotham now that it was safe again.
  19. Bruce has fixed the auto pilot that Lucious said had been a problem on the bat. He probably ejected himself quite soon after he got over the water. The more i think about the film the less i like it. Bane got less interesting as time went on and i hated the way he went out.
  20. You can drastically reduce them though. How many school/mall/cinema shootings does it take for the U.S to realise that people who are unstable have far too easy a access to firearms compared to in other countries.
  21. Sky news is saying that random bag checks are going to be conducted at the Odeon in Leicester square. In all honesty it was probably just a nutcase choosing a place he knew would be crowded and dark, making it hard for people to escape. There isn't going to be a cinema killing spree and security guards don't need to be deployed in theatres nor do metal detectors.Taking away the guns is the only way to stop there being reports of mass murders every other week in the States but sadly it seems more likely that there will be a call for more people to walk around armed to 'protect themselves'.
  22. Film: Avengers Assemble Time: 4:00pm Crowd: 30-40 people Trailers: American Pie 4 - A few laughs Safe - N/R The Dictator - A few laughs Brave - N/R The Film: Once again i let the overwhelmingly positive reviews of a films blind side me into thinking i was about to see something truly special. I didn't. The Avengers (Avengers Assemble in the UK) is the best marvel film to date, don't get me wrong. It has epic scale due to the sheer number of familiar characters and several big set pieces. The script is also in check with Tony Stark especially delivering a few lines of his trademark wit, with Downey JR in top form as usual. Unfortunately the film never really rises above an entertaining two hours though. It didn't have any sort of emotional impact on me as a viewer and i was never in the belief that anything unexpected was going to happen, the heroes were always going to save the day. The film just doesn't have the sort of quality or thrills to even match Batman Begins, never mind The Dark Knight and i have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the Dark Knight Rises will be the film of the summer, leaving the Avengers in wake. Overall the film is fun and light hearted and i would recommend it, especially to marvel or comic book fans but if you're not a fan boy don't expect anything too amazing, it's good but nothing more. 7/10
  23. Film: Mission Impossible 4 Time: 14:05 Crowd: 30% Cinema: Showcase, Leeds Trailers: Wrath of the Titans - The last film had a great trailer but was a terrible film, this one doesn't even have a decent trailer, looks really poor. Men in Black 3 - Not funny, story looks like it was put together at the last minute. Black Gold - Meh. The Film: The first film i've seen at the cinema in over three months and in all honesty i was a bit dissapointed. The film was another case of rave critical reviews getting my hopes up only for me to be left feeling underwhelmed. The script and story are fairly standard, featuring the typical 'save the world' plot. I've always liked Cruise and like always he proves to be a charismatic lead and judging by the shape he's in and the fact that he completed some of the stunts himself shows that he can be a leading action star for a few years to come yet. Speaking of the stunts, they are genuinely impressive, especially the scene at the Burj hotel in Dubai although some of the CGI in the bigger explosion scenes does look a bit suspect. All in all, the film was good but the familiar storyline makes it slightly unworthy of all the raves it has been receiving. Coming out of the film the audience reaction appeared good, with most people saying they thought it was a good film. 7/10
