  1. Stupid comment from a MOD. Just because a film is released everywhere doesn't mean everyone has seen it or that they will accept seeing spoilers in a completely unrelated part of the forum.
  2. Yeah but they also based that on early word of mouth and buzz. And just because you don't think the movie is something that would interest you doesn't mean that it isn't a 'good' movie. I haven;t seen it yet but I'm hoping it's good, I don't make any judgement until i've seen it though.
  3. So you've seen the trailer and not the actual movie. In other words you have no basis to say whether the film is good or not.
  4. I disagree about The Conjuring, i think it'll drop about 56% as the WOM is very good for a horror. R.I.P.D will be 66% IMO.
  5. Denzel's films generally cost $100M to make though and his OS appeal is limited. If you look at his career quite a lot of his films fail to double their production budgets WW.
  6. Film: This is the end Time: 10:55am Crowd - 4 people Cinema: Bradford, U.K Trailers: Monsters University The Heat The Film: I enjoyed it. I'm a fan of Pineapple express, knocked up etc... and I like the style of humor that these guys have. I didn't find it to be quite as hilarious as maybe I had expected due to the great reviews. I think i will enjoy it more on a second viewing with more people as the cinema was dead. 7/10
  7. I enjoyed it. It's completely understandable that with a reported $200M+ budget they didn't risk having too many gore shots as an R rating could have really put this in financial trouble. If you compare it to I am Legend then I think 'Z' is the better film. The effects are much better although the zombies movements look a bit fake sometimes, the action sequences and explosions all look great. As previously mentioned by someone, the opening is great. The film does exactly what you want it to do and gets straight into a massive scale action scene to introduce us to the zombies. In my opinion it's second only to the Dawn of the Dead remake for zombie movie opening sequences, and it's definitely one of the best horror openings in a while. The film works best when it's action is on a large scale, and for the most part the action sequences are huge events with thousands of zombies. If you're going to make a $200M zombie film then it makes sense to have some epic action scenes, which is what makes the ending (which is in a more confined setting) slightly disappointing. A confined setting wouldn't have been a problem if the end would have been more tense and scary but unfortunately some of the zombies reduced the audience to laughter. Terra-dactyl sounds and teeth chattering were among the zombie actions that had the audience chuckling rather than covering their eyes. The ending also does feel a bit tagged on to give the film a sense of closure rather than a more natural and satisfying end which i would have hoped for. Pitt is likable and believable in his role as the devoted father/globetrotting U.N specialist. A less capable actor could have fallen into the background, overshadowed by the zombies and the action scenes but Pitt remains the focal point and I'd like to see him do more of these large scale action hero roles. Overall the lack of gore didn't put me off this film as there were enough jump moments to keep the average horror fan interested and the lack of gore will also help the film appeal more to action fans who should find plenty of sequences in the film to enjoy. Definitely recommended and hopefully it will do enough business to get a sequel. 7/10
  8. Film: World War Z Time: 18:00 Crowd: 40% Trailers: The Internship - some laughter This is the end - Lots of laughs Pacific Rim - Nothing (Really not seeing the buzz for this) The Lone Ranger - Nothing The Film: As a horror fan I'm glad to say that despite being almost gore free, World War Z is still a very solid, action packed zombie film. It gets straight into the action and is only second to the Dawn of the Dead remake for zombie moving opening sequences. The scale is suitably grand and the film is at it's best when showcasing epic action sequences with the zombie hordes. The film's pace slows toward the end when it changes to a more confined setting and the ending does feel a bit rushed and tagged on for some closure but overall the film is well wort seeing. If you like big action, regardless of whether you are a zombie/horror fan there should be something here for you to enjoy. 7/10
  9. I'm glad The Purge is dropping so heavily. A very poor film that had a great marketing campaign.
  10. The main problem with 'The Purge' is that in a film like this you need to have a degree of sympathy for the plight of the main characters. If you don't care if they live or die then the film needs to at least contain some inventive or scary sequences to satisfy the audience. The basic plot of the movie is that on the night of 'The Purge' (where crimes including murder are allowed for 12 hours) the Sandon family lock up their house only for their son to let in a homeless man who is being chased. His attackers aren't too happy about this and give the family the option of handing over the man or they will be killed too. The waiting gang are a bunch of well to do young kids wearing smiling masks who have the equipment available to break through the homes security defences. All of the family are annoying as hell. Ethan Hawke starts off being the hotshot dad who is a big security salesman in his town. His character then quickly changes into that of a ruthless man who will do anything to protect his family. He then changes again to deciding that protecting a homeless man who he does not know is the better idea because his family are whining about not wanting this stranger to die. Have I mentioned the homeless man puts a gun to the daughter's head at one point? The daughter has an older boyfriend who Hawke's father has banned her from seeing. The boyfriend stays in the house during The Purge and all too predictably tries to kill the father just as things start to go down outside. He gets killed in a gunfight and whilst the family are panicked and searching for a homeless man who is running free in their house, she decides it's a good idea to run away from her mum and go it alone, because her boyfriend (who just tried to kill her Dad) is dead. The mum played by Lena Heady, similar to Hawke's character frustratingly changes toward the end of the film and decides that handing over the homeless man to the gang outside isn't right, putting herself and her children in unnecessary danger. But worst of all is the son, a long haired, bushy eyebrowed little dweeb that makes weird looking cameras. He lets the homeless man in and despite the man then running free in his house, he guides the homeless man to a hiding spot to protect him from his father who is desperately searching for the guy in order to save his family. He complains non stop when his mum and dad find the homeless man and try to hand him over to the gang, thus convincing his parents to 'do the right thing'. When the gang do eventually enter the house with about 15 minutes left in the movie there are a few standard kill/fight scenes, mainly involving one shot kills. The gore is pretty tame in all honesty and the sequences lack any real tension or originality. Disappointingly, there isn't a single 'jump' or scare scene to be found in the entire film. The creepy looking masks worn by the gang are shown too often and the only member of the gang that really speaks doesn't wear a mask at all. His performance is also over the top, making him less scary and more a caricature of someone like Patrick Bateman. The ending when the neighbours come to the families rescue and then show their ulterior motive can be guessed within three minutes of the film starting, it's so unbelievably obvious that you are just waiting for it to happen. The film ends on a sort of 'violence is bad' message as the mother, despite the neighbours just trying to kill her, lets them go. How awkward is that going to be tomorrow? What the film does well is specify that only Class 4 weapons and below could be used on the Purge, which makes more sense as I considered the extent to which violence would be allowed before watching the film (bombings? terrorism?). It also states that Rank 10 governmental employees could not be killed. The opening credit sequence showing cctv footage of Purge crimes is also pretty good, but it is a shame the rest of the film feels so confined when a story set out in the open where everyone on the street could harm you would have been more entertaining. Overall, the film didn't bore me but it didn't excite me either. It's standard horror/thriller fare that probably isn't worth your money in theatres but might be worth a rent. 6/10
  11. Film: The Purge Cinema: Norwich, U.K Time: 21:20 Crowd: 70% Trailers: World War Z - little chatter The Conjuring - lots of chatter Despicable Me 2 - A few laughs The Last Exorcism 2 - Nothing The East - Nothing The Film: A bit of a disappointment really, I went in expecting a mixture of Saw and The Strangers and whilst it is similar to those films slightly, it lacks content that makes it anything other than a standard horror/thriller. There isn't any real sense of danger or sympathy for the characters and it all seems quite predictable. Despite it's eye catching credit sequence it also takes quite a while to get into any real action. I'm fairly easy going ratings wise on horror films and it didn't bore me but it's hard to recommend the film as a must see in the cinema. 6/10
  12. I never understood the 'Denzel is a drawing power' arguement. His movies are pretty consistent, yes. But not for the right reasons. His movies pretty consistently fail to double their production budgets (which is generally regarded as an indicator of a movie being a 'success').
  13. Attendance was never going to be close, because in the last 10 years technology has changed to the point that less people overall are going to theatres. Do you really think Sony were upset at a gross almost $200M more than the previous film? Even if you disregard the overseas grosses, the second film lost $60M from the first, the third only lost $11M from the second. With average WOM from what was generally considered to be an unnecessary sequel, I don't see how the film could have hoped to make much more than it did.
  14. Men in Black II Domestic: $190,418,803 43.1% + Foreign: $251,400,000 56.9% = Worldwide: $441,818,803 MIB 3 Domestic: $179,020,854 28.7% + Foreign: $445,005,922 71.3% = Worldwide: $624,026,776 He lost his drawing power?
  15. Crowd report for Saturday May 25th Film: Star Trek: Into Darkness Time: 14:15 Crowd: 70% Cinema: Odeon, Norwich Trailers: Man of Steel - Not much reaction/Snyder always cuts a good trailer. After Earth - Nothing The World's End - Laughter World War Z - Looking forward to this now that the buzz is picking up Ender's game - Visuals look good but it will bomb Despicable Me 2 - The minions got a lot of laughs The Film: I enjoyed it, upon first viewing i'd put it at a similar sort of level to the first film. I've never watched the original series or any of the films so i'm in no way a trekkie, although it seemed like the vast majority of the crowd at least had some knowledge of the original series. An older woman in front of me did a little fist pump when old Spock came on screen. Cumberbatch was very well suited in the villainous role, definitely a memorable nemesis which a lot of action films suffer from not having (coff Iron Man). Watching Star Trek always reminds me of how Zachary Quinto should be in more movies, his Spock stole the first movie and he holds his own again in this film. Pine is charming as Kirk and the rest of the supporting cast are also great. Overall if you enjoyed the first film then seeing this one is a no brainer. 7/10
  16. In all honesty, who actually cares if it's at 68.5 or 70.2M on Friday? It's going to make over $1B worldwide. Surely that and that alone should be the big talking point. Domestic box office is not the end all it once was.
  17. True but we were sort of laughing at how every single injury resulted in him getting the duct tape out. I wouldn't have said that this was a comedy at all though. With the exception of the over the top gore it was pretty much a straight up horror.
  18. I didn't enjoy it in the slightest. The fact that you were in "tears" is slightly worrying. What about it did you find funny? The hilarious way Terrence Howard told the players that they were black, over and over again? Or the side splitting way the black players thought he was talking about teamwork? The movie was atrocious, I've seen a lot of your other reviews and I think you have to accept that your taste rarely goes with the majority opinion. Whilst that isn't necessarily a bad thing it does show that your judgement on certain films is questionable to say the least.
  19. 6/10 Definitely wasn't scary so the 'Most terrifying film you'll ever see' tag on the poster was a big lie but as a horror it pretty much delivered. Ton's of gore but in all honesty not a whole lot else. Acting was pretty bad in parts and like what someone else mentioned, I was glad the brother got killed off. It seemed like his way of dealing with every injury was to put a bit of duct tape on it.
  20. 3/10 I half chuckled at the Naomi Watts/Liev Schrieber skit but that was it. A 'comedy' over 90 minutes long managed to make me half-laugh one time. A seriously terrible film with no redeeming features at all. Every skit is ridiculous, which wouldn't be a problem if they were at all funny or in the slightest bit witty. But they aren't, it's just extremely bad all around. Anyone that enjoyed this even slightly needs to find out what defect they must have right away.
  21. In all honesty I thought it looked pretty weak. The crowd seemed uninterested too.
  22. Film: Evil Dead Time: 20:15 Cinema: Norwich Odeon Crowd - 60% Day: Wednesday 24th Trailers: Byzantium - Nothing Hangover 3 - A few laughs The Conjuring - A few jumps/chatter The Film: A decent horror flick. It delivered on the gore aspect but there was nothing scary about it. The audience was mainly made up of university aged people so there were a few "ewww's" and quite a few times there was laughter at the excess gore and the way the characters dealt with certain situations. I'd recommend it to horror fans but no one else. 6/10
