  1. In April/May? There were quite a few who were actually
  2. Completely disagree, given that certain segment is their target audience. Media is highly influential, and show creators choosing to cover real or sticky topics have a responsibility to cover them accurately and with reservation. While this isnt isn’t an exact comparison It’s the same reason things like Song of the South got buried from Disney and that Pocahontas is wildly criticized. Because they take hard subjects and romanticize them in a dangerous way that miseducates a young target audience. Media is influential and so I don’t believe creators should be given public permission to spew whatever message they please on a major platform.
  3. Im saying the show is one that’s targetted at teens (who are at heightened risks of suicides) and it at minimum irresponsibly covers the topic. The creators had been given recommendations to follow when portraying a show about suicide by experts in order to reduce the risks of it being a trigger and they blatantly ignored those recommendations. They got further critcized since then, and still refused to backtread. It is the show creators problem that they’re ignoring actual professional criticism that their show is dangerous for a good portion of their target audience (at bare minimum it grossly miseducates teens about suicide and mental health).
  4. Idk if I’d say 13RY is responsible for suicide because that’s the same thing as blaming bullying. I’d think the correct response is they can both make somebody who already has mental health issues and at risk of suicide at heightened risk.
  5. The show isn’t dangerous because it’s responsible for/causes suicide. It’s dangerous because it romanticizes it in a way that could be a trigger for somebody already on the edge, without showing anyway for help/hope. Compare this to how a satire show (Crazy-Ex) dealt with the issue. That show also portrays a suicide attempt, but shows hope, shows the wrong way to support somebody as well as the right way, and it shows getting help as a positive factor in the character’s life. It also correctly identifies mental illness as the cause, and doesn’t blame any outside factors or the character itself. That show is also a much, much, much better show than 13RY.
  6. Completely different things. Call of Duty isn’t a game trying to tackle the issue of school shootings and why they happen. Also what causes somebody to go on a shooting spree is NOT the same thing as what causes somebody to commit suicide. They’re both mental health issues, but that’d be like saying ALS and Cancer are the same thing. The backlash against CoD is from conservative parents trying to blame something else besides guns. The backlash against 13RY is from actual professionals who realized the show could serve as a trigger due to the mishandling of the issue and not appropriately showing how an individual could get help (and even worse, showing the counselors and parents to be oblivious idiots)
  7. Lol, I heard about that. Sounds like they’re taking hot button issues and romanticizing them because they sell. So they haven’t taken any of the criticisms to heart. I despise that show. I’d rather give Uwe Boll a Star Wars movie than let 13RY have another season.
  8. It doesn’t matter if they think it’s a good idea if they’re still irresponsibly glorifying it and ignoring criticism from mental health professionals about how they are portraying it. At best the show creators grossly misunderstand the issues that cause suicide, what leads to it and how it’s prevented and is dangerous. At worst theyre aware of this and decided to go through with it anyways because they thought it’d sell better.
  9. It’s pretty common for most psychologists who takes about the show to say it’s a potential trigger for somebody with depression or contemplating suicide (or who’s attempted in the past). The fact that the show rather ignorantly ignores guidelines from psychologists and mental health professionals is pretty aggravating and shows they don’t care about actually using the show as an educational show for mental health and suicide. There are much better shows and movies that address suicide in a manner that won’t trigger somebody who is at risk or vulnerable to being influenced. https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources/school-safety-and-crisis/preventing-youth-suicide/13-reasons-why-netflix-series-considerations-for-educators/13-reasons-why-netflix-series-considerations-for-educators https://www.google.com/amp/observer.com/2018/02/netflixs-13-reasons-why-linked-suicide-increase/amp/ http://www.sprc.org/13-reasons-why https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/07/31/health/13-reasons-why-suicide-study/index.html https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.abqjournal.com/1178053/netflixs-13-reasons-why-puts-teens-at-risk.html/amp https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theatlantic.com/amp/article/535518/ https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/05/18/13-reasons-why-stop-teen-suicides-doctors/613316002/ https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/2646769 https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2018/05/16/607066609/as-13-reasons-why-returns-schools-try-to-help-students-who-are-thinking-of-suici https://www.google.com/amp/www.foxnews.com/health/2017/06/27/families-blame-13-reasons-why-for-2-teens-suicides.amp.html https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2017/06/27/families-blame-13-reasons-why-for-teen-daughters-suicides/amp/ https://www.google.com/amp/amp.timeinc.net/nme/news/tv/father-hits-selena-gomez-13-reasons-daughters-suicide-2177932%3Fsource%3Ddam https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/promoting-hope-preventing-suicide/201704/13-reasons-why-13-reasons-why-isn-t-getting-it-right%3Famp https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-high-functioning-alcoholic/201706/13-reasons-why-13-reasons-why-may-send-dangerous-message%3Famp
  10. Is there a difference though between somebody acting racist irl vs somebody glorifying racism in their show. They’re both racist. Im not saying that Netflix does care, I’m saying they should. The show creators may not be glorifying suicide and such outside of the show, but they sure are using their show as a vehicle for their negative message while trying to mask it as a good one.
  11. I was more thinking how 13 Reasons has been unapologetic in how irresponsible its portrayed different issues on screen. It’s one of the few shows that could actually have an actual negative effect on the public (and there’s evidence that first season did, we’ll see about 2) Racists are horrible and so are suicide glorifiers.
  12. Lololololol this is too good Youre up next Netflix. Cancel that abomination 13 Reasons why
  13. These are kind of my predicts right now The Other Side of the Wind, Norway and Roma are all Netflix now so I feel any hope for them is faint. Maybe Mudbound changed things. I think if any Netflix film can make it, Roma will. I also think BlacKkKlansman is much weaker than people are claiming rn. Think Beale Street and Widows will overshadow it. 14. Also, with the exception of Beautiful Mind, all of those scores are from historical epics which is an easy genre for the academy to get behind.
  15. I could also see the “Coogler not in contention” posts aging as poorly as the “Get Out has no chance at a nom” posts. It’s way to early to tell for sure. I could see the academy going all in on BP, with a BD, screenplay and Supporting Actor to go with it. I could also see it get shut out from all the main cats. Kind of have to see the state of the race come December or so.
  16. I’ll give it a try. I’m not huge on Minecraft, but that was always because I’ve always preferred games with an actual drive to them versus sandbox stuff. Sounds like Quest has some mission style elements to it
  17. Is it even worth installing? I’m hesitant about that game and may just wait for the mobile app this June to try it out (much more free space on my phone) Looks like Smash is what I’ll have to mainly look forward to for 2018. I’ll try out the Let’s Go game though, I kind of wish they hadn’t done that or Quest and just devoted more time to the 2019 game so it’d either be better or come out earlier.
  18. Let’s Go looks fun enough to try. At worst it’ll be a glorified play through of Pokémon Yellow with some Pokémon Go mechanics
  19. Don’t worry, this was the third announcement. Looks like Let’s Go! Eevee is a hybrid RPG to keep people happy until the next one
  20. Here’s the next announcement trailer for the real game
  21. They’re announcing three things First is a free to play Mobile switch game called “Pokémon quest” that’s a ripoff of minecraft My expectations have now sunk
