Right, the thing is that you guys are very intense in stating your points. There is usually no "but" or "maybe" involved. And that is fine when arguing about things like Avatar BO numbers or Titanic legs because those are facts. When defending/attacking something like Alita usually both sides are at least partially right because the movie is so "inbetween" everything (no idea how to get this into better english). Critically the movie is right between fresh and rotten (after 270 reviews i think it is still only two or so removed from rotten again). Financially it is not a complete flop (like many hoped/predicted) and not a smash hit (like many hoped/predicted). And on an artistic level there is even more subjectivity involved. So if you bring "JC is the king of BO and movies" style arguing into a discussion about Alita, you open yourself up to a lot of criticism and attacks that will escalate. the funny thing is that social/political/racial/cultural issues were not discussed in the Alita thread. At least as far as i can tell (please correct me if i am wrong here) it was just about whether the movie was a success or not. And since that means something different to everybody, people started to resort to name calling.

Havent been on this forum a lot for the past few years, but has it gotten common that movie threads get locked that easily? Also, it is somewhat annoying that the JC gang (which is not completely innocent in provoking the lock) will just move on to their Avatar thread, but those that were actually interested in A:BA will now have no place to talk.

Wednesday (2/27/2019) Numbers - HTTYD 3 $2.05mn.

In german there is a saying that translates to "hope dies last". I guess that applies to me in this case. The movie could have done quite a bit worse (see Mortal Engines) which would have truly destroyed any kind of hope. To me there is still a small glimmer left... which might actually be more cruel than a flat out flop because then i could at least have closure. -

I do not think that anybody will argue that $85m would be a success. Just a signal that there is enough interest to merit a sequel. And i can fully understand the general smuggness that is being on display here because of the crap that was spewed by some of the more fanatic Cameron believers, but it still hurts a little. It would have been a nice change of pace if this could have worked out differently. -
Yeah, as others have said good WoM did not jump over to the general audience which is a bit of a shame. Good reviews would have helped with this a lot. I do not want to hate on critics too much because Alita is certainly flawed, but it really got trashed hard. I guess having Cameron associated could have contributes to this a little (his name might be a two edged sword... helps with the marketing but heightens expectations from critics)? Also, the open endedness really hurt the movies score (though i really have no idea how else this could have been done better). In general i think adapting manga like Alita is challenging because there is just one incarnation of the character and one story. With western comics you have constant reboots and relatively short story arcs (which frequently start and end at the same status quo) from which creators can choose and pick. Thus CBM mainly adapt characters and not so much the stories themselves. This provides a lot more freedom to make the material more suitable for a movie format. With Alita not being successful in the US i am really starting to wonder whether there will ever be an adaption that actually clicks with general western audiences.

Alita: Battle Angel ***SPOILER THREAD***
chuck0 replied to IronJimbo's topic in Box Office Discussion
But yeah, he is a more interesting character in the manga (though not necessarily more likable) which helps with the romance. Probably the main difference is that Alita is drawn to him because he is really driven in a very intense way to ge to Zalem (got the feeling that in the movie he is simply a cool dude she falls for). Also he has a tragic backstory that was skipped. -
