  1. Yeah, the japanese BO returns are pretty disappointing. Japan has never been into western Anime/Manga adaptions though so not completely unexpected.
  2. I am afraid probably not. Competition will be ramping up this week.
  3. I really wonder if there is a studio exec out there that has the balls (or is dumb enough) to give $200m to an R-rated Akira 😅 I think the main problem with that property is that (at least from the movie persepctive... i have not read the manga) there is not one likable character
  4. But those are not really rules in the sense that they are part of nature right? Wasnt "female led SH movies dont work" also one of these rules. It might be that manga adaptions do have even more stacked against them, but i dont think that just giving up trying is the right way to go.
  5. Right, the thing is that you guys are very intense in stating your points. There is usually no "but" or "maybe" involved. And that is fine when arguing about things like Avatar BO numbers or Titanic legs because those are facts. When defending/attacking something like Alita usually both sides are at least partially right because the movie is so "inbetween" everything (no idea how to get this into better english). Critically the movie is right between fresh and rotten (after 270 reviews i think it is still only two or so removed from rotten again). Financially it is not a complete flop (like many hoped/predicted) and not a smash hit (like many hoped/predicted). And on an artistic level there is even more subjectivity involved. So if you bring "JC is the king of BO and movies" style arguing into a discussion about Alita, you open yourself up to a lot of criticism and attacks that will escalate. the funny thing is that social/political/racial/cultural issues were not discussed in the Alita thread. At least as far as i can tell (please correct me if i am wrong here) it was just about whether the movie was a success or not. And since that means something different to everybody, people started to resort to name calling.
  6. Havent been on this forum a lot for the past few years, but has it gotten common that movie threads get locked that easily? Also, it is somewhat annoying that the JC gang (which is not completely innocent in provoking the lock) will just move on to their Avatar thread, but those that were actually interested in A:BA will now have no place to talk.
  7. right, but 1:2 is more positive than 0:1 ... Thats mainly why i was asking what 0:1 means since it is not a proper fraction. They probably round to this at a certain point (like 1:100 ) ?
  8. yeah, but maybe a week ago it was usually around like 5:1 wasnt it? I might remember this wrongly? Did something happen on thursday? [edit] scratch that.... that was the premiere.
  9. Anybody know what is going on here? does the ratio mean that there is no positive tweet? Seems like a troll storm is brewing...
  10. Since there is a lot of glee in your post i would assume Alita. Which is a shame 😕
  11. I guess this would further confirm the notion that the BO climate is still crap. 😕 Still have to see the movie, but yeah, WoM certainly should not be toxic...
  12. As always, to be taken with a grain of salt, but google trends search traffic might hint at quite a bit of front loading for HTTYD? Last day in the graph is wednesday. First big drop for alita is also nicely visible. CM is really starting to pick up.
  13. In german there is a saying that translates to "hope dies last". I guess that applies to me in this case. The movie could have done quite a bit worse (see Mortal Engines) which would have truly destroyed any kind of hope. To me there is still a small glimmer left... which might actually be more cruel than a flat out flop because then i could at least have closure.
  14. I do not think that anybody will argue that $85m would be a success. Just a signal that there is enough interest to merit a sequel. And i can fully understand the general smuggness that is being on display here because of the crap that was spewed by some of the more fanatic Cameron believers, but it still hurts a little. It would have been a nice change of pace if this could have worked out differently.
  15. Disney is a highly startified company that is extremely image concsious (see your James Gunn example). Fox is/was IMO not the same in that respect.
  16. Well at least Alita got quite a bit farther away from that -60% mark.
  17. The first HTTYD falls in that category for me. The scene where Hiccup befriends Toothless is pure magic
  18. Yeah, as others have said good WoM did not jump over to the general audience which is a bit of a shame. Good reviews would have helped with this a lot. I do not want to hate on critics too much because Alita is certainly flawed, but it really got trashed hard. I guess having Cameron associated could have contributes to this a little (his name might be a two edged sword... helps with the marketing but heightens expectations from critics)? Also, the open endedness really hurt the movies score (though i really have no idea how else this could have been done better). In general i think adapting manga like Alita is challenging because there is just one incarnation of the character and one story. With western comics you have constant reboots and relatively short story arcs (which frequently start and end at the same status quo) from which creators can choose and pick. Thus CBM mainly adapt characters and not so much the stories themselves. This provides a lot more freedom to make the material more suitable for a movie format. With Alita not being successful in the US i am really starting to wonder whether there will ever be an adaption that actually clicks with general western audiences.
  19. Only way i can see is a non CGI Alita. But even then the next part of the story involves Avengers levels of destruction which would be difficult to pull off in a series. The thing i could see working is a properly budgeted anime movie.
  20. Is it usual that they do a weekend estimate before the studio reports thursday numbers?
  21. How on point are estimates like that usually? Would love for Alita to hold like that.
  22. But yeah, he is a more interesting character in the manga (though not necessarily more likable) which helps with the romance. Probably the main difference is that Alita is drawn to him because he is really driven in a very intense way to ge to Zalem (got the feeling that in the movie he is simply a cool dude she falls for). Also he has a tragic backstory that was skipped.
