  1. i have absolutely no idea about how the SK box office works, but it seems like this is a proper reaction to such numbers... please correct me if i am wrong
  2. Is it bad because of how its translated? Because that is exactely what i feel when hearing the german version... its sung very nicely (i think the singer is elphaba in the german wicked) but the lyrics are a little bit rough and german is at least imo not really that suitable for this kind of song.
  3. is it normal that a movie increases from its opening day in the middle of its following week? (or did i read this wrong) btw regarding all the localizations of let it go... there is really a great cut of (i think) most of them
  4. Jackman is really good in that... he also had a funny follow up at the tony awards
  5. yea bay cranked the color saturation/contrast up to eleven in that one... also his uber dramatic moving wide angle shots from below start to get a little annoying... but at least imo the story/concept isnt that bad when you like scifi stuff.
  6. Yea, i also have a really good feeling about japan... regarding MU, i think the whole university/education theme clicked pretty well with a large part of the general public there... frozen might be embraced because of different qualities such as elsas story arc and the skandinavian setting. Will be really interesting to see if MU numbers could be reached And wow that SK performance seems really exceptional...
  7. Uh... nut job doing well? I really hope that frozens legs will not be chopped off by a squirrel... regarding search traffic: its pretty interesting that this weeks opening movies barely register in google trends. The only one that had at least some search volume was ride along (note that the data only includes Tuesday and that absolute values are to be taken with a grain of salt since this stuff is still in beta). http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%2Fm%2F0kvhr5y%2C%20%2Fm%2F0kmyxvt%2C%20%2Fm%2F0ryt9m1%2C%20%2Fm%2F052pswp%2C%20%2Fm%2F0swlzl6&geo=US&date=today%203-m&cmpt=q its also nice to see how AH and WOWS got their oscar nomination bumps with hustle getting the larger one
  8. No, the voting starts after the nominations have been made public ( http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/oscar3.htm ) I think the previous post implied that the oscar noms alone will provide an additional push for AH (as the golden globe wins seem to have done)
  9. 4 Frozen (2013) $761,440 -83% 3,239 -79 $235 $318,080,546 8 Disney 5 The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug $618,160 -73% 3,075 -655 $201 $242,844,948 5 Warner Bros. / New Line i know i know "dont feed the trolls"... but i just couldnt resist

  11. The songs are primarily concentrated in the first half of the movie. Frozen heart, do you want to build a snowman, love is an open door as well as let it go are pretty much happening back to back. Here the movie really is as close to a stage musical as it can get. The second half of the movie only has in summer, the reprise to for the first time in forever (which makes for a pretty neat moment) and fixer upper. In the end if musicals arent for you Frozen might be a bit hard to watch since a large part of it is conveyed via song...
  12. Google search traffic for WoWS really has been keeping up very nicely... i guess that might have been an indication for very strong word of mouth. Its a pretty close battle between it and frozen (though i guess its more the trends that are interesting and not so much the absolute values... this kind of topic traffic statistics are still in beta and thus should be taken with a grain of salt). http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%2Fm%2F0kvhr5y%2C%20%2Fm%2F052nd_v%2C%20%2Fm%2F0kmyxvt%2C%20%2Fm%2F0ryt9m1%2C%20%2Fm%2F052pswp&geo=US&date=today%203-m&cmpt=q WoWS really will have some very strong legs
  13. Simply saying to not be interested in a movie is perfectly fine for me, but uhm arguing your point like this is not exactely helping to make it (also its not a moose its a reindeer... that behaves like a dog )
  14. regarding WoW... anybody think it can overtake the weekend grosses of DoS in the coming weeks? Google search traffic seems to indicate that people are really interested in the movie (its right on top of that metric together with frozen) http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%2Fm%2F0kvhr5y%2C%20%2Fm%2F052nd_v%2C%20%2Fm%2F0ryt9m1%2C%20%2Fm%2F0kmyxvt%2C%20%2Fm%2F0jws4d1&geo=US&date=today%203-m&cmpt=q or was that kind of development anticipated anyways?
  15. I know that as a newbie my opinion wont matter that much but in a way i can see where you are coming from... i mean i adore the movie (seen it four times) but i am fully aware that it has plenty of flaws... many critics have pointed those out and the most negative ones have basically nitpicked the movie to death by latching onto them (up to a point rightfully so). All i can say in defense of frozens reception is that it has a very very solid core narrative and two protagonists that a large part of the general population can identify with. For many this completely overshadows lapses in storytelling or characterization. The movie simply works for most on an emotional level which is really difficult to quantify properly... If somebody does not connect with the main characters (and there is nothing wrong with that) the films flaws simply will become more apparent... btw i think thats the case with quite a few other highly rated movies as well...
  16. yep it seems that there is plenty of repeat business... the newest trailer from disney even encourages this
  17. I like Enchanted quite a bit myself and i guess its more an homage and modernization of standard disney tropes than mocking. Both male lead characters get their princesses there is still a clear villain and there are some pretty neat musical numbers (a pitty that Idina Menzel does not participate in any of them )... Frozen goes a step further in most of those respects. In the eyes of some critics this might have harmed its narrative structure a little but overall i think it was a brave thing for the creators of the movie to do and most decisions paid off in the end (especially box office wise). In contrast Shrek for example is actually mocking disney Btw regarding wolf of wallstreet and word of mouth... at least search traffic wise this movie is currently dominating google trends (together with frozen). Do you think it could inch ahead of DoS in the coming weeks?
  18. That might be part of the reason... but i explicitly selected the movies as topics which means that multiple search terms are accumulated in there (so there is a possibility that something like hobbit 2 is included in those numbers)... still this feature seems to be in beta so i would not be surprised if its not completely accurate
  19. Just a quick update on frozens search traffic on google trends... it seems like it overtook WoW on tuseday http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%2Fm%2F0kvhr5y%2C%20%2Fm%2F052nd_v%2C%20%2Fm%2F0n40qmp%2C%20%2Fm%2F0kmyxvt%2C%20%2Fm%2F0jws4d1&geo=US&date=today%203-m&cmpt=q not sure if anybody is intersted in these numbers, but i still think its somewhat remarkable . What is strange though is that DoS is that low overall. I guess most people that are interested in the movie knew about it anyways which is why they did not have to search for information about it on google.
  20. Thanks and here is a short time article on the issue http://entertainment.time.com/2013/10/14/do-animated-female-characters-need-to-be-pretty/ (i guess the issue was primarily discussed on feminist/animation sites/blogs) I have to confess i dont have enough experience with box office predictions so this might be a misconception, but i have the feeling that the opening gross was in large parts due to a different demographic than what is currently giving it its legs. It was the only family movie at the time whereas catching fire was still a really strong competition for the older female demographic (part of which might also have been influenced by some negativity surrounding frozen... though yes i have to agree that that is just pure speculation on my part ).
  21. Just had to make an account to reply to this I think word of mouth is really the primary reason for it doing this well. A good indication for this is google trends... http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%2Fm%2F0kvhr5y%2C%20%2Fm%2F052nd_v%2C%20%2Fm%2F0n40qmp%2C%20%2Fm%2F0kmyxvt%2C%20%2Fm%2F0n4g112&date=today%203-m&cmpt=q there you can see pretty nicely how frozen has an extremely unusual pattern in search frequency (when compared to other stuff like catching fire or smaug) which is, as far as i assume, because people are hearing good things about the movie from friends and start searching for it via google. I think another thing related to this late boost is that initially frozen was shunned pretty badly by somewhat influential blogs (primary related to the story changes which seemed like they would reduce the feminist message of the original fairytale... also the head animator made some poorly worded statements regarding the way the female characters are animated). Now that the movie is out and people have actually seen it articles like this appear (put it into a spoiler tag because the url actually can be considered to be one... the article it self as well) and people who really were on the fences regarding this princess movie start coming around as well (btw the number of comments/views on that article is pretty high) . The final thing that probably contributed to this boxoffice run is that the movie is starting to caputre teens and tweens now. The inital marketing was primarily trying to get the kids and families, but now via the later trailers and word of mouth the broader appeal of the movie has been made quite apparent. I guess it might be mostly girls/women, but having this demographic behind a movie can be a force to be reckoned with anyways (see twilight ). Btw this can be seen nicely on tumlr nowadays (before chrismas there wasnt that much happening with respect to the movie... mostly gif reposts of let it go and some fan art, but now its taking off quite impressively) Not sure if my assessments are really completely correct, but i have the feeling that some parts of the interwebs have been pretty abuzz with frozen
