  1. I’d be interested to see how Mattel’s Barbie sales were impacted. My niece went from zero interest in Barbie to it dominating her Christmas list this year. There’s Barbie themed merch at “kid” places like Claire’s and Miniso. I’ll bet a lot of these kids didn’t actually see the movie, but the movie put Barbie back into the cultural conversation in a fresh way that appealed to a lot of young girls. Not disagreeing with your point that the movie wasn’t a huge hit for young kids in and of itself, but I’ll bet it moved the needle in ways for Mattel that are probably pretty interesting.
  2. Between Minus One, Monarch and this, Godzilla fans are being well fed. I have a soft spot for monster movies even as an almost 50 year old woman, I think because my little brother loved them and so growing up, we ended up watching a ton of these on VHS. G vs. K was my first movie back in the theater after I got vaccinated. Excited for this one. Hope it lives up to the hype!
  3. For me personally, it was basically 100% Ezra that made me not go see it. Unfortunate for the movie itself, which is probably not awful, but I’m not paying money to watch them play a hero. Can’t suspend belief that much. Are there other actors just as terrible? I’m sure, but I don’t know the details like with Ezra. I also won’t go see a Kevin Spacey movie or one made by Bryan Singer. Maybe half of Hollywood is terrible, but you can’t spend your time researching every person involved. Otoh, when I know, I can’t just put it aside.
  4. Sidenote to the whole box office thing, I'm seeing a ton of pink merchandise being pushed front and center. We were at the mall the other day and Dillards had a huge display of pink heels (nothing Barbie specific, just all a bunch of pink options). There were pink purses on the aisle, pink clothes on mannequins, etc. Daughter ended up getting a pair and chatting with the saleswoman about the movie. Just kind of cool to see the trickle down marketing effect. I think that speaks to the level of phenomenon it is. It is The Movie, The Trend, etc. and, importantly probably for Mattel, it resonated with Gen Z in a way that most traditional media has not.
  5. That weekend was WILD. I remember the weekend thread and the numbers just kept going up and up and up and up and people were losing their minds. My Dallas area theaters were showing EG around the clock and they were selling out 3AM shows. It was really, really an amazing weekend for Marvel fans and people who enjoy box office in general.
  6. When Depression Barbie was watching the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice and That Scene with Mr. Darcy appeared...I was like, "Hey, now...did we have to hit that close to home, Greta????"
  7. I agree with that take. It took me out of things a bit, tbh. I thought it was good, but definitely not something I feel any need to watch again. The first 1/2 or maybe 1/3 felt a bit like a pretty clip show where I couldn't really get much of a connection to the characters. I couldn't really get into it until later in the movie and by then, it wasn't really connecting for me. I don't know, it felt like it was a Good Movie (tm), but not one that particularly resonated with me, personally, though I did really love RDJ's scenes and it was well acted. The actresses didn't have much to do, but they were good. Guess that was a sign of the times. That feels like a critical review, but it was very good overall. Just not really...enjoyable, I guess. I feel the same about The Godfather movies, lol. I can recognize they are good movies, well made, etc., but they don't really grab me, personally.
  8. This was a blast and surprisingly touching. Definitely resonated with all the ladies in our group. Our crowd was loving it, too, which always makes it more fun.
  9. Atwell is like Oscar Isaac in that she has chemistry with anyone and everyone. Glad to see her in a role like this. I'm not a huge fan of this franchise, just not my personal thing, but kudos to Cruise for keeping it going and still making good movies.
  10. This was hilarious, deeply raunchy and surprisingly touching. I laughed, I cried, I had to google stuff after leaving the theater…my audience ate it up.
  11. I feel that way, too. I enjoyed it the first time, but the more I sit on it, the more I feel like that was a fun movie experience. I do think it was a bit long and had one too many chase scenes. I will always say it was a missed opportunity to bring back the Short Round character and make him a true partner for "Dr. Jones", but oh well. I liked Helena fine. Honestly, it was just fun, and we have so few adventure movies anymore. Plus, I just love Indy as a character, I guess. I rewatched through TLC, and I think that what DoD misses, for me, is the sense that Indy is, ultimately, having a blast on the adventure, even when he's about to die, you felt like he still thought every adventure was worth it. He never loses that, and I do think that the Indy in DoD is at a crossroads where I felt like he didn't quite get back to himself until the very end, though that was an interesting character journey, don't get me wrong.
  12. Going to see this tonight! They are doing a lot of early screenings. Looks fun. I hope so. I saw Adele Lim (director) retweet a review that said the movie "objectifies men and targets white people" and that she wants that on a t-shirt. That's the kind of energy I am looking for!
  13. I want to see this. It's my kind of movie. I find the subject matter fascinating, and I like these sort of process/solve a problem kinds of stories. But, dang, the trailer just saps more and more excitement from it each time I watch it. I don't know who cut the trailer, but they made nuclear weapons super boring somehow. The trailer for this and The Creator ran one after the other in front of Indy tonight and the difference in intensity and interest was dramatic, even though this is probably way more my speed. How do you make the development of the nuclear bomb look boring? How is that possible? I'm sure the movie itself will be fine, Nolan at least manages a "fine" with his movies and this may end up one of his better ones, but I maintain the trailer does it no favors.
  14. I quite enjoyed it, myself. It slots behind Raiders and TLC by a good bit, but it's ahead of ToD and Crystal Skull for me. Honestly, with how good the de-aging was, I'm curious if they will ever just go that route, maybe not with Indy, but with other iconic characters. That was impressive. Not quite perfect yet, but very, very good.
  15. We have very different memories or impressions of the movies coming out in the 1980s-present lol. I would not describe most as essential in any way.
  16. Off topic, but he is so good in Shrinking. It's really a fantastic performance from him. I've always thought he was underrated as an actor, so it's good to see him getting some recognition for his work there.
  17. Pretty much all major movies are cynical cash grabs. No studio is out there making "passion projects" for "the sake of art". Of course, this is a cash grab. Take my money! I love Harrison. I'm looking forward to seeing one more ride with Indy. Yay for older actors and actresses getting to do things like this. As long as I'm entertained for a couple hours, I got my money's worth.
  18. Tom Cruise and his Scientology connection makes me want to dislike him, but his love of movies, theaters and movie-making in general makes me inclined to like him. I'm so conflicted. Anyway, I've got my ticket for tomorrow's Indy showing. It's decently full, but not sold out, though most everyone around here has a 4 day weekend thanks to the 4th falling on a Tuesday. Seems like a lot of people I know plan to go see it sometime, but there's no rush, except for me, just because I love Indy and Harrison Ford.
  19. So, it sounds like a perfectly fine movie, nothing amazing, nothing terrible. I don't know if that kind of reaction is enough to move the needle on ticket sales. Feels kind of mid and anticlimactic after all of the months of chatter.
  20. Would a “Trumpy” judge want to hand a defeat to DeSantis? Not that this case will get far anytime soon…
  21. Well, obviously it’s between him and the studio. Maybe it’s important to the plot or character development and worth whatever potential box office loss results from an R, but it isn’t like Nolan isn’t capable of getting a good movie at a PG-13. Just makes me wonder what it is because it seems odd to me given the subject matter. If it turns out to be important in some way to a movie about the making of the nuclear bomb to have it in there, then kudos for standing his ground. I don’t think he’s without some self indulgence in his movies, though, but he’s earned it, I suppose. Just not my cuppa, is all. More power to anyone who feels differently!
  22. I don't know that there is some huge audience of teens now denied, BUT I do know a lot of older adults who simply will not go to R rated movies. They don't like the language or sex, particularly. Just don't want to pay to see that. I do find it an odd choice to keep it at an R rather than trim whatever offending nudity or whatever is the issue because I actually think that would help with expanding its core audience of adults. I'm still personally planning to see it eventually, but probably not opening weekend. It's my kind of movie, though I'm not a big Nolan fan by any means. I just find the subject matter fascinating. I'm glad they are still making movies about things like this, and I'm sure it will be well done.
