Star Trek Beyond | 7.22.2016 | Not an Oscar winner.
noknobs replied to Neo's topic in Box Office Discussion
It wasn't really a plus for me either. Fortunately I think it finds a balance. Yes it's closer in spirit to the original series, but the action and set pieces are great and make the original series look like... well, the original series. Production value, spectacle, great cast, humor, it's still in there. It just has the feeling that it could be a very long episode from the original and touches on themes from the originals. So if you're like me, never a trekkie and loved the last two rebooted movies much more than any Star Trek prior, then odds are you'll still love this one. -

I really liked Star Trek 09 & STID. I saw this yesterday and really enjoyed it as well. I do think it will be more pleasing to the hardcore trekkies as far as the story, and it continues to have great action & some good humor along the way. The gay Sulu controversy is waaay overblown. It was sad seeing Anton & Nimoy. -
Why do people keep talking about Avatar holds? It's a little harder to decrease by under 2% on your second weekend when you had about 191m your first weekend. And it doesn't matter since TFA will sprint, not walk, past Avatar's domestic gross.
-
This is a mortal lock to beat Avatar's domestic gross. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

Not totally awful. I'm glad you're here to tell us these things. Chewie! Take the Professor in back and plug him into the hyperdrive!

So it's only going to get $30m+ over the previous December record holder for a Saturday... and that makes people think this is front loaded? This is DECEMBER! The legs on this thing are going to be almost as impressive as it's opening weekend.
-
Guess what? You're wrong.

Then why'd they acquire it in the first place? At any rate, if they just want to make more money they could simply make BOM available for a monthly fee. Or just sell BOM to somebody else. I'm sure all the data will end up being accessible, but whether that's at IMDB/BOM, and whether it's still free, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
-
Just looking at it logically, it doesn't make any business sense for IMDB or Amazon to just get rid of BOM. As far as the service it provides it's clearly head and shoulders above anything else. So I've got to believe it's temporary until I hear for sure otherwise. And if they are going to get rid of it for good, then I would think they'd create something similar on IMDB or IMDBpro. I mean why buy the website only to get rid of it? Doesn't make sense.

When I was a kid I'm sure I watched only the most critically acclaimed and award-winning movies. -

Fixed that for you, since the domestic box office includes Canada. -

Well I'm going to focus on the positives - the prior two weekends w/ TMNT & GOTG. At least they're still bringing in solid numbers. I almost feel like buying a pity ticket for Ex3. Almost. -

The fact it's bigger than GI JOE at all is a huge success. -
