  1. So is it mostly just clips from the anime then? That's lame.

If it's anything like the other anime seasons-converted-to-movies I've encountered, it'll be reanimated from scratch with much higher production values than the TV version.  They'll tighten the whole thing up into a single two-hour story arc, probably cutting several minor subplots entirely, and possibly making a few major changes.

Ash Ketchum has gotten annoying, at least in the English dub, but I would imagine some of that stems from the source as well. And it's not a charming annoying like usual, it's a real annoying. It wouldn't surprise me if the new film bucks the trend of surpassing the previous. That said, new games come out this fall: OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire. Oh wait, those are remakes of the games that yielded the weak-performing Advance series movies. Sigh. This is why they should bring back Misty and Brock.

Or let him actually make some progress toward his long term goal, rather than sending him to a new region again, starting with a whole new bunch of pokemon again, meeting new traveling companions again, and being a seemingly inexperienced newbie with no clue about the basics again.

  2. As the others have shown, it's not quite what you'd expect by the bread description. The Japanese word "pan" (pronounced sorta like "pahn") is a bit more encompassing, and includes a variety of filled buns or  pastries  as well as the traditional loafs you might expect. They're usually filled with a sweet paste, custard, or cream, but it can be savory. The full name will usually include a description of what's inside. Anpan for red bean paste. Kuripan for curry filling (I think, at least. My Japanese is really rusty and was never comprehensive.)

I can't quite read the labels of those images, so I'm not sure what flavor Anna and Elsa have.

I may need to check out Uwajimaya to see if they're available there.

Anna's filling is chocolate cream and "milk whip", which I've never heard of before but I assume is a relative of whipped cream.

Elsa's is raspberry jam and milk whip.

  3. I think I've found a useful way to look at this. A famous bit of writing advice (from Kurt Vonnegut, IIRC) is that 'every character should want something, even if it's only a glass of water.' So, when considering a female character, ask yourself, what does she want?

It gets tiring seeing Shallow Love Interests who want to marry The Hero, and Damsels In Distress who want to be rescued by The Hero, and women who want to support The Hero, and women who want to help The Hero realize his true strength/destiny/whatever, and so on. We need more female characters whose driving desire does not revolve around The Hero.

  4. I think people miss the point entirely here. A woman always acts as a way to support or provide progress to a male protagonist's story because EVERY character in a story should be supporting, providing progress, or being an obstacle to the main character. Any side character who fails to do this has no place in the story.

This is true from a storytelling perspective. However, when it appears that in-universe, she only exists in relation to him, then we have a problem.

  5. That's weird. I checked wiki for Japans top 20 movies and they had spirited away at 230m a week ago but they have it at 300m now and titanic at 258m. The fuck wiki?

Exchange rates.  At the time of SA's theatrical run, its 30.4B yen was worth about 230M dollars.  At today's exchange rate, the same 30.4B yen is about 300M dollars, and Titanic's 26.2B is 258M.

And this is why you shouldn't consider Wikipedia to be anything more than a starting point for real research.

  6. The video announcement can explain some loss of the audience, but isn't the solitary reason. Simple passage of time will explain more. For the specific weekends that were depressed, we also had the sports days. If you look at the chart of weekly (rather than weekend) grosses, the decline is more modest: business shifted around, but it's still chugging along.

Yes.  Even movies with great legs start to drop eventually.

  7. You can put it on as long as it's expected to be released in 2014 and is at least filming or further into production according to IMDB (they tend to be pretty accurate regarding production status). I did used to be more strict about it, but I came to realize this is what happens with most of the Oscar bait so there's no point waiting that long.

Good to know.  In that case, here's the list:

    1: The Boxtrolls

    2: Song of the Sea

    3: Inside Out

    4: Big Hero 6

5: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

    6: Guardians of the Galaxy

    7: Interstellar

    8: Mockingjay Part 1

    9: Avengers Age of Ultron

    10: Transformers: Age of Extinction

  8. The Sixth Sense vs. Ghostbusters

Star Wars vs. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers vs. The Jungle Book

Back to the Future vs. The Dark Knight

    Titanic vs. Independence Day

The Ten Commandments vs. The Avengers

    Jaws vs. Pinocchio

    Doctor Zhivago vs. Mary Poppins

    The Exorcist vs. Forrest Gump

    Spider-Man 2 vs. The Godfather

    101 Dalmatians vs. Fantasia

The Empire Strikes Back vs. The Graduate

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King vs. Raiders of the Lost Ark

    Avatar vs. The Sting

Return of the Jedi vs. The Lion King

    Jurassic Park vs. Bambi

  9. if you take a look at google earth at Haiti and the The Dominican republic where the fence is that divides the island. Lush green to the east of the fence. 150 years ago, a TDR dictator heard about japan and made sure the jungle stayed intact w selective cutting. Haiti clear cut. Today TDR thrives and Haiti is a freaking mess.

To be fair, that's far from the only difference between the two, and is more an effect of Haiti's troubles than a cause.  You can't save for the future when you're already starving in the present.  (Short synopsis of Haiti's history: everything a colonial power can do to screw over an ex-colony was done to Haiti.)
