  1. I’m more baffled at him saying Americans aren’t into British stuff. Like…we love their stuff more than we love our stuff 🤣
  2. I'll keep things brief, because I know people hate me bringing this NTC stuff up for some reason. I even made a point to say that Color Purple doesn't really fit in the same way as Barbie or Little Mermaid since, yes indeed, Celie and Mister toys aren't being sold. So yes, it's not actually an NTC. But I mean, if you don't think Color Purple wasn't greenlit because of the popularity and fond memories people have over the classic Spielberg movie and think they aren't trying to get older viewers' attention by selling them something they are familiar with when they were younger...well, I wish I was you. I really, sincerely do.
  3. I mean I kind of get it, if only because Wonka and Color Purple and Mean Girls all exist as exercises in nostalgia pandering (alas, Color Purple and Mean Girls aren't selling toys so I can't use the NTC term...unless they are making Celie and Regina George Funko Pops), plus the latter two are based off already established and successful stage shows. But I'm not really sure minimizing the musical aspect of these movies in their advertising does anything to bring people in. And even if it does give you a bigger opening, it just means worse WOM. Plus putting out one or two of the songs from your movie in advance is an easy marketing tactic. Like obviously Wish bombed, but I certainly doubt it was because they kept advertising a new song each week. If anything, that was the one thing keeping awareness alive for the movie.
  4. James Corden performs a rendition of Under Pressure in the movie. Not Ice Ice Baby, which makes more sense with the snowy mountain setting. But Under Pressure. I think about that bizarre creative decision every other month.
  5. I remember going to see the animated movie Smallfoot on a whim, because I was bored and there was nothing else out at the time. That also didn't reveal any of their songs in the trailers, so I had no clue I was stepping into a musical. When the big yeti began doing a showtune, I almost audibly said "what the fuck" before realizing there was a family in front of me. Wish I could say it was a pleasant surprise, but the songs in that movie stunk!
  6. Matt Singer brought up this weird trend a few weeks ago. How musicals are now super coy in their advertising and don't show the characters singing. Which is just baffling to me. Some recent musicals bombed, but La La Land and Greatest Showman weren't that long ago. There's an audience for this stuff, but now you're hurting stuff like the new Mean Girls movie, which from the online trailer just looks like a cheap direct-to-video remake of the original movie with nothing else added to it. https://screencrush.com/musical-trailers-hiding-the-music/
  7. I do wonder if initial WOM is getting dinged by false advertising a bit? I kind of sort of get why they didn't really advertise or make it blatant that it was a musical. The Wilder movie is known and loved for its iconic music, so WB thought audiences probably expected it to be one. But I can see people being confused as to why folks are singing when the movie didn't promise any singing at all.

  9. You know @M37 already did this, but I'm gonna go further. Because I did my own research. Was waiting to share this in the weekend thread for easy likes, but might as well do it now. I have compiled every single mid-December opener that I could find, courtesy of The-Numbers. Specificially ones like Wonka that are 3-day openers to level the playing field. I did have some issues with years like 2014, where the 19th was arguably pre-Christmas and mid-December, as well as 2015, when Christmas was on a Friday, but I just included that weekend and the weekend prior to make things kind of easier and also add even more comparisons. So without further ado, here's every 3-day mid-December opening available to me and their OW multipliers. So of the 127 movies, 127 of them, the only movies that have gotten to over 20x their opening on this weekend. Five of them. Just five. And the last one? Well, it was a movie that came out 26 years ago and um...was pretty atypical from most runs. Something called Titanic. Of the movies listed that did 10 times their opening? A bit more at about 19. But you know...that's only 15% of the movies listed. And the last one listed there was a movie called Avatar, which also had a pretty atypical run. So yeah. Seems pretty tough for Wonka to achieve a feat that you say is a total breeze and it can do in its sleep. Now let's look at the openings that came out on December 15 specifically. After all, release date really matters when it comes to December legs. Wowie zowie, only 3 three movies got to 10x. And the last ones were in 1989 with two movies that literally nobody in this forum has ever heard of before. That seems pretty challenging for Wonka to achieve. Now, let's move onto just adding in G/PG-rated movies to make a genre comparison. So on that list, only one single movie got above 10x, and it only just barely did so. Mouse Hunt, a film that came out 26 years ago. So riddle me this, Batman. Why and/or how would Wonka get to 10x its opening? Or 15x its opening, as you claim? You said movies can do it on Christmas just like that, but I'm showing you for films with similar release dates as Wonka, that the evidence is not there. Why and/or how can this film reach 10x or 15x or 20x or whatever, when it will be playing pre-pre Christmas break, will lose screens to a whopping 5 new releases (and Poor Things expanding), with two more new releases three days later, will lose all its PLFs to Aquaman, at a time when PLFs are more important than ever to find success, and with moviegoing cut dramatically after COVID and the streaming wars gave theaters a huge blow? Tell me. I want to know. I showed my work, and you seem ultra cocky about 10x being a total 100% no question lock for Wonka. So show me yours. Because this attitude you've been having over this movie and Migration and how they will have the greatest legs in movie history has gotten pretty old and tired and everybody's sick of it. Show me your work.
  10. This is the only time I will accept these Early Access shows lmao
  11. I can't wait for his 8 paragraph tweets hyping up this movie lol

  13. Braugher's death is very tough for bisexual me. Brooklyn Nine-Nine was my favorite show when I was in high school, and Braugher as Holt (also Jamal from Empire, despite Jussie now doing his...thing) was very important in getting me more comfortable about my sexuality. That it was okay to be LGBT and not fall into certain stereotypes or traits. He really changed my life for the better. This is all just sad to know.
  14. Schedule's busier than ever for me, but hopefully I'll be able to catch a viewing.
