  1. Don't jump the gun...no one else is reporting this and Universal is usually all over these announcements with glowing press releases
  2. Weekly Chinese Box Office Preview from BO In order to maintain a healthy balance between domestic product and Hollywood fare, SARFT (The State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television) imposes an annual blackout "month" on most imported films. This weekend begins the month or more-long protection period and sees 14 new films enter cinemas. Of the eight new domestic films, three co-productions, and three imports, Hollywood Adventures (横冲直撞好莱坞) has all the makings of a summer blockbuster. Directed by Justin Lin (Furious 3-6, Better Luck Tomorrow) and starring superstar and newly minted billionaire Vicky Zhao (赵薇), current it boys Huang Xiaoming (黄晓明) and babyfaced Tong Dawei (佟大为), this Hollywood-China coproduction has been aggressively marketed for months through publicity tours, music videos, and cast appearances. According to EntGroup's EFMT Index, Hollywood Adventures has the highest level of awareness and intent to purchase of any release this weekend. We think it could be a massive hit on the Mainland grossing upwards of $100 million a la The Breakup Guru which opened in the same frame last summer on its way to $107.83 million. Another film getting buzz this weekend is Hear Me (听说), a lighthearted teen romance film from Taiwan starring popular performers Eddy Peng, Ivy Chen, and Michelle Chen. However, the film was released in Taiwan all the way back in 2009 which might hurt box office potential. Begin Again starring Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley seems to have skirted the blackout, but its limited appeal to Chinese moviegoers is probably the reason for this unattractive release date. Finally, Jurassic World will be losing most of its screens this weekend due to the protection period, but we still see the hot ticket in China placing in the top 3 and ending its run over $200 million. Other films opening: The Temptation in Lincang 临沧的诱惑 (China), Come Back, Love 约定到时候 (China), My Geeky Nerdy Buddies 大宅男 (China/Taiwan), Bloody Destiny 拳霸风云 (China), Can't Prove 无法证明 (China), I Love You, Too 恋爱排班表 (China), Where The Wind Settles 对风说爱你 (China/Taiwan), Twilight Online 午夜43路 (China/Hong Kong), The Three Pigs and the Lamp 三只小猪与神灯 (China), and The Adventures of Little Piglet Banna 小猪班纳之梦想大冒险 (China).

The film got off to an outstanding start with an estimated total of $132 million worldwide. Latin America posted $21.8 million, led by Mexico with $8.8 million which is the highest non-sequel animated opening of all-time and the fifth highest overall animated opening of all-time. Argentina opened at #1 with $3.3 million and Brazil took second behind Jurassic World with $3.1 million. Elsewhere Colombia grossed $1.1 million and Panama took in $1.6 million. Russia also opened at #1 with $7.7 million, the highest opening ever for a Disney/Pixar animated release including Frozen. Australia took in $3.6 million which is on par with Big Hero 6’s opening and should have strong holds through the upcoming Winter school holiday. In Europe, France was the only significant market to open this weekend and took in $5.2 million, just below Frozen. The Fête du Cinéma, an annual celebration of films which brings out huge audience numbers, which starts next week, as well as summer school holidays starting on July 3 will help Inside Out moving forward. International releases will be staggered throughout the next few months to coincide with local holidays. Inside Out will open in Belgium, Hungary, New Zealand, India, and Trinidad next weekend. Other key overseas openings are South Korea (July 9), Spain (July 17), Japan (July 18), UK/Ireland (July 24), Italy (September 16), and Germany (October 1). China has no confirmed release date yet.

  12. Perhaps the "ouch" comment was unwarranted in that it needed further explanation and for that I apologize. "Ouch" was intended to mean that JW won't make what the majority of forum members were expecting...namely $200M+ and continued domination at the box office this weekend. I have nothing against Hollywood movies -- I myself am American, and both attended JW and enjoyed it -- but a Chinese language movie debuting with these kind of numbers and cutting into JW's market share deserves a comment.
  13. From BoxOffice.com Universal Pictures International (UPI) has released Minions in Indonesia and Australia and early estimates show the animated film taking in $987,716 from 461 locations. The film opened at #1 in Indonesia on Wednesday, 41% ahead of Despicable Me 2 and scored Universal's second biggest opening day behind Furious 7, but ahead of Jurassic World. It was also the country's biggest opening day for an animated film. Minions bowed today in Australia and is pacing 32% ahead of Despicable Me 2. The film took second place behind Jurassic World which has grossed $15.89 million through Wednesday. Minions also opens today in Malaysia and Singapore and will open in 40 other international markets before its North American release on July 10.
  14. As of Weds 6.17 Domestic: $350,981,145 Int'l: $1,160,641,348 WW: $1,511,622,493 Universal will stop tracking F7 domestically this Friday...

  17. BoxOffice.com has updated international numbers...not a great website, but at least numbers are accurate and current
  18. It's clear from today's early trend and the rest of the weekend that China's "protection month" will be starting in full force...I think JW will have a tough time getting to 200M...tops 180M
