  1. Very impressive: Globally, THE GRINCH is now the highest-grossing Christmas-themed pic of all time and the top Seuss adaptation. https://deadline.com/2019/01/the-grinch-crosses-500-million-worldwide-box-office-1202532071/
  2. I think The Grinch is now the highest grossing Christmas film (animated or live action) worldwide of all time. Home Alone was like 473m WW (not adjusted for inflation). That's pretty good considering it was always a DOM-leaning film.
  3. THE GRINCH Illumination Entertainment Universal/Illumination’s domestic holiday hit has now topped $200M overseas ($203.9M) while global is at $469.4Mthrough Sunday. The weekend was worth $17.5M in 61 offshore markets with a great hold of -27%. A number of hubs were up versus the pre-Christmas session as the animated Dr Seuss update has surpassed the lifetimes of both Rise Of The Guardiansand Trolls. Hong Kong was new to the green meanie at $486K to best the starts of Big Hero 6and Trolls. The top holdover market was France with a 28% increase in the 5th weekend, to cume $14.2M and exceed the lifetime of BH6. The UK leads all play at $33.8M to date. Other notable cumes include Germany’s $17.2M, Mexico’s $16M and Australia’s $12.5M.
  4. I think counting the previews vs OD multiple of something like Marwen or Second Act (as adult films)., their OD multi vs previews was 4.7. This means Vice probably did 900K-1m in previews if the multi is the same. Which means its actual OD was like 3.8. So 2.9m second day from a 3.8 actual opening is like -25 or -26%...
  5. Isn't the drop for Vice due to Mon previews rolled in the Christmas Day number? If it did like 600K previous, OD is then 4.17m, and with 2.9m today the drop is like -30%. If previews were higher, then the actual drop is lower. I think the fact that they rolled in the previews made the drop bigger today, right? That could also be the case for On the basis of sex, but not Holmes which had no previews. What do you think? Also @Pinacolada this is to your point.
  6. Thanks Omni. DHD: THE GRINCH Illumination Entertainment You’re a green machine Mr Grinch. Universal/Illumination’s animated take on the Dr Seuss classic Christmas tale crossed $400M worldwide this weekend, now tallying $422.5M. Of that, $169.3M is in the overseas stocking. This weekend added three offshore markets for 62 in play which stuffed $23.7M into the chimney. New hubs include Russia with $4.2M from 1,662 locations, followed by Korea at $1.36M from 429 and Ukraine at $461K from 178. Seuss’ work is best known in English-speaking markets, as well as Germany. The latter was up 2% this weekend and stuck the No. 2 slot to outperform newcomers Mary Poppins Returns and Bumblebee. The cume there is $13.6M. The UK likewise was up, by a percentage point, to cume $31.1M. Also jumping were the Netherlands, Belgium and New Zealand. Mexico ($13.9M cume/-35%/close to Moana lifetime), Australia ($11.4M/-7%) and France ($11.2M/-13%) are the other Top 5 plays. The Grinch steals into Hong Kong on December 27.
  7. @Omni Predictions for WW and OS given this weekend's performance?
  8. Its actuals are probably come at a -35% drop OS from last week. Last week actuals were $2 million higher than estimates. Universal tends to underestimate OS usually.
  9. THE GRINCH Illumination Entertainment Universal/Illumination’s The Grinch added 20 markets this session for a $27.1Mweekend. That lifts the overseas cume to $64.8M and worldwide to $268.3M as it continues to steal hearts domestically. Offshore, Dr Seuss is not as well known outside English-speaking markets. However, Germany is an outlier. The movie debuted there this session with $3.75M at 656 locations to double Moanaand come in ahead of Boss Baby and Coco. Also new was France with a No. 1 bow of $3.7M to track above Big Hero 6. In Australia, the start was tops, in line with Trolls and above Coco with $2.9M from 279 locations. Italy ($2.1M/452), Spain ($2M/339), Poland ($992K/212), Belgium ($808K/157), Central America ($739K/155), Austria ($625K/76) and New Zealand ($570K/98) were all No. 1 bows. The top holdover markets include the UK at -33% for a $21.7M total to date, followed by Brazil with $4.9M so far. The Nordics also continue to be aboard the sleigh with Sweden ($2.2M cume) and Norway ($2.2M) seeing slight drops. Coming next are Mexico this week, followed by China, Japan, Korea and Russia later this month.
  10. 10 USD average price for regular ticket. 3D/4DX can go to 15 USD per ticket or sometimes 20 USD
  11. -21.5% drop for week 3. More than $9 million above Box Office Mojo's 5-day prediction of $33m 5-day. Best third weekend drop for an Illumination film. And this is despite competition with Ralph. Great hold.
  12. THE GRINCH (from left) Cindy-Lou Who (Cameron Seely) helps liberate the Grinch (Benedict Cumberbatch) from his grumpiness in “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” from Illumination. Universal Stealing $9.4M at the international box office this weekend, Universal/Illumination’s family pic has put $25.2M in the sack in 23 offshore markets. The global cume is now $151.7M with much more rollout ahead. There were no new openings this session, but strong holds and increases for Saturday and Sunday. The top play remains the UK with $12.83M to date, taking the No. 2 spot this frame behind the debut of FB2. The weekend’s $4.9M is above Big Hero 6, Coco and Moana. Brazil saw a hike of 16% that was aided by a national holiday. The total there is $3.1M. Drops elsewhere were minimal including in the Nordics and the UAE. There are still 49 markets to open on the holiday Dr Seuss adaptation, including such majors as France, Australia, Italy, Germany, Japan, Spain, Mexico, Korea, China and Russia. DHD
  13. That's the thing though - it's all a matter of opinion. I know a lot of families who loved the other Illumination films like Pets, Sing, DM films etc. It's all a matter of opinion, which is what makes movies great.
  14. Grinch's 2nd weekend is higher than DM3's 2nd weekend by 5 million, even though DM3 debuted to 72m vs 67m for the Grinch. It's also the best 2nd weekend drop for an Illumination film excluding Sing and DM1
  15. Great number for the Grinch! DHD updated it - if true will be the best 2nd weekend hold of an Illumination film since possibly DM1! Another challenge for FB2 is that there’s other strong family product cutting into its business: Illlumination/Universal’s The Grinch after a $8.9M Friday is looking at a second weekend of $37.5M, -44% and a running total of $125.8M and Paramount’s Instant Family is drew an estimated $4.4M on Friday for a potential $13.3M opening in 4th. Let’s also not forget the multi-generation appealing Bohemian Rhapsody which looks to be third with a $15.1M third weekend, -52% and running total of $127.2M, that’s also preventing FB2 traffic.
  16. NEW THE GRINCH Universal Pictures Universal/Illumination’s The Grinch has a staggered release overseas with the first 23 markets going this weekend. Of those, the UK and Brazil are the only majors. The total for the debut frame is $12.7M with nine No. 1s including the UK at $6.53M. The overall start is slightly above where we were seeing it ahead of the weekend (in the $10M range). With domestic, the global debut is $78.7M. Dr Seuss is a much bigger brand domestically, and familiarity offshore is somewhat limited to English-speaking markets while Germany is also a fan (in part thanks to the Ron Howard-directed 2000 movie that was led by Jim Carrey). With a typically thrifty production cost of $75M before P&A, Illumination should be able to tap into its own brand, and the holiday theme, even if it can’t fully rely on the IP being the major offshore draw. One of the film’s most successful trailers, at 2.5M YouTube views, was the one where the Minions actually watch The Grinch trailer in a theater. The film’s three trailers gained 262M views globally. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the green grouch in this animated offering directed by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier. The UK start at 559 locations is in line with Paddington, and ahead of Frozen, Coco and Moana. In Brazil, at 571, the Whoville gang came in above Sing and landed No. 2. Scandinavia did solid business with a No. 1 in Norway and $747K at 150 to track ahead of The Secret Life Of Pets, Trolls, Cocoand Sing. The Grinch will expand throughout the rest of the year with France, Australia, Italy, Germany and Spain at the end of the month. A December 14 China date has also been confirmed. DHD
  17. BOX OFFICE.COM In the scheme of 2018 animated releases, The Grinch now boasts the second-highest opening weekend of the year after Disney’s Incredibles 2, which took in a record-breaking $182.6 million back in June. Additionally, it set an opening weekend record for a Christmas film (not adjusting for inflation), besting the last Grinch‘s $55.4 million debut. https://pro.boxoffice.com/box-office-grinch-girl-spiders-web-overlord/
  18. DHD 5th update, Sunday AM after Friday and Saturday updates: Refresh for chart and more analysis Yesterday, matinees drove Saturday business for the Dr. Seuss yuletide classic to an estimated $27.5M, +47% from Friday keeping The Grinch on track for a $66M opening per Universal. That’s Illumination’s 7th No. 1 opening and Uni’s fourth No. 1 opening in the last eight weeks after The House With a Clock in its Walls, Night School and Halloween. Overseas, boosted by UK and Brazil, delivered $12.7M sending The Grinch to a $78.7M worldwide start. Other studios see The Grinch grabbing more green stateside with $67M. Universal is estimating today at $19.8M, -28% from Saturday. However, with U.S. schools acknowledging Veterans Day tomorrow, business for the Mean One could near $70M. ComScore reports that close to half of all K-12 schools will be off Monday, with 28% colleges on recess. The 3-day start for The Grinch is 22% higher than the 2000 live action Ron Howard-directed version at $55M. And though it’s not a whopper of an opening in the $100M Illumination The Secret Life of Pets and Minions sense of the word, The Grinch‘s 3-day is higher than the three-day of Despicable Me ($56.3M), Sing ($35.2M). Legs won’t be a problem during the holiday season. Howard’s Grinch did a 4.7 multiple and hit $260M. Sing boosted by year-end holiday business hit $270.3M. https://deadline.com/2018/11/the-grinch-bohemian-rhapsody-weekend-box-office-1202498901/
  19. FORBES Illumination and Universal/Comcast Corp.’s The Grinch opened with a whopping $66 million over the weekend (and $78.7m worldwide). That’s a solid 3.52x domestic weekend multiplier, with only 3.33% of that weekend gross coming from the Thursday previews. For comparison, bigger overall numbers notwithstanding, Secret Life of Pets ($5m/$38m/$104m) and Minions ($6m/$46m/$115m) earned 5% of their weekend gross on Thursday and nabbed over/under 2.6x weekend multipliers. Christmas movies that open in November tend to be leggy, which is why so many Christmas hits (Home Alone, Elf, The Santa Clause, etc.) do not open in December. Even Robert Zemeckis’ too-expensive (but underrated) Christmas Carol ($138 million from a $30m debut in 2006) and Robert Zemeckis’ too-expensive (but underrated) Polar Express ($162m from a $30m Wed-Sun launch in 2004) were leggy as heck. Sony’s animated The Star earned 4x its $9.8m debut last year. Walt Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet will provide Thanksgiving competition, but then it’s clear sailing until the year-end Christmas blitz. I’d be surprised by anything under $215m domestic, although The Lorax “only” earned 3x its $70m debut in 2012. A 2.8x-3.0x multiplier (Hop, The Lorax and Minions) gets it a total between $185 million and $198m, while 3.5x multiplier (Secret Life of Pets) gets it to $231m. A 4x multiplier, which again wouldn’t be that crazy for a well-liked Christmas toon, gets this one to $264m, or about on par with Sing ($270m in 2016) and Despicable Me 3 ($264m in 2017). Despicable Me pulled a 4.4x multiplier, although that was more of a lesser-known quantity (Grinch is a known quantity with zero surprises), but that gives Grinch a $290m domestic total. This is all educated guesswork until we see how it performs against Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Ralph Breaks the Internet over the next two weeks. https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2018/11/11/how-the-grinch-stole-the-weekend-box-office-with-boffo-66m-debut/#640f01087c25 Illumination Entertainment Rank Title (click to view) Studio Gross / Theaters Opening / Theaters Date 1 The Secret Life of Pets Uni. $368,384,330 4,381 $104,352,905 4,370 7/8/16 2 Despicable Me 2 Uni. $368,061,265 4,003 $83,517,315 3,997 7/3/13 3 Minions Uni. $336,045,770 4,311 $115,718,405 4,301 7/10/15 4 Sing Uni. $270,395,425 4,029 $35,258,145 4,022 12/21/16 5 Despicable Me 3 Uni. $264,624,300 4,535 $72,434,025 4,529 6/30/17 6 Despicable Me Uni. $251,513,985 3,602 $56,397,125 3,476 7/9/10 7 Dr. Seuss' The Lorax Uni. $214,030,500 3,769 $70,217,070 3,729 3/2/12
