  1. This. It had the 2nd best Domestic Multiplier this year (x3.64) after Wonder Woman (x4) which means reception was surely good in the US. EDIT: This is among 200+ DOM Friday openers in 2017. Also it's never about DOM only, it's about worldwide for sure. Domestic is where the media focuses on because these writers are from the states, but what matters is worldwide these days.
  2. They submitted only This is Me, but they could have submitted a 2nd one, but they didn't want them to compete with each other.
  3. That's what makes the film's soundtrack great. Everyone has their favorites and it's not 1 consensus song.
  4. YAY for JUMAJI finally beating TLJ on Monday! It's a much better film imo. Like other posters said, you could really connect with its characters. Oh and I loved Greatest Showman too. Flawed yes, but the soundtrack is on fire and it puts you in such a great mood
  5. Meh. Overlong, badly acted, some good and bad scenes, a mix of un-ncessary sub-plot points. 5/10 C
  6. I want Jumanji to beat TLJ in one of its dailies ASAP. Loved that movie and as for TLJ...meh.
  7. Exactly. No one cares if FF8's 1.25B is from DOM or OS. A billion is a billion. It's no longer about DOM only. And we have several films this year that prove this, including BATB, DM3, FF8, XXX3, Kong and others. The media, and forums, pay more attention to DOM because these people are from North America, but reality is that OS is just as important, or even more important, than North America.
  8. When movies like BATB and DM3 and FF8 all make 750-1B OS alone, SW8 should be able to at least match BATB/DM3 with 800m OS. Maybe it might, but it looks a bit unlikely. It's true that SW8 is not as beloved in all regions compared to something like FF8 or DM3, but given how it's huge in Europe, and given TFA made 1B OS, a 20% drop (800m OS) was expected. So 600m OS for SW8 isn't great.
  9. One of my favorite blockbuster films of the year. And I did not expect to love it that way. Genuinely funny and Jack Black was wonderful in it. A great comeback for him. Planning to see it again.
  10. FF7 made a considerably huge 1.5B too and look at its 2017 retention rate with FF8: an impressive 1.24B (81%). The reason? It fell hashly domestic (230m vs 350m) but the overseas success (1B OS! for FF8 vs 1.1B OS for FF7) is what made the retention rate that strong. Same with DM3 vs Minions. DM3 fell 21% domestically (which SW8 won't match) but OS helped it achieve this great 89% retention. In both cases, FF8 and DM3's OS retention was almost close to 93%. Point is: if the OS audiences supported SW8 and came back for it just as they did with other franchises, we would have been looking at perhaps a 650 + 900 = 1.55B which would have been an acceptable 75% retention for SW8.
  11. I originally listed the 3 biggest franchises of 2017 DM3, FF8 and SW8. The other ones may or may not make profits, but these are smaller franchises (in terms of box office revenues). True SW8 will make much bigger profits than them, but its audience did not come back for SW8 as much as they came back for DM3 or FF8, which is an alarming sign for future sequels. Plus am not sure if SW8 will be more proftable than something like DM3 or FF8 (which had lower expenses including marketing) and will probably both beat SW8 overseas along with BATB. Maybe even BATB will be more profitable or on par with SW8, not sure. But the retention rates don't look good.
  12. DM3 vs Minions with 89% retention made huge profits FF8 vs FF7 with 81% retention made crazy crazy profits SW8 ws SW7 with 65% retention will make big profits, but its audience retention will look very weak compared to the above franchises which had much lower budgets and may end up being more profitable. Retention is a very important measure of a future of a franchise - is there an audience for it? Is there a captive recipient or is it falling apart.
  13. If SW8 ends up with 1.35B or 1.375B, it will have a worse retention rate among big franchises worldwide in 2017: FF8 vs FF7: 1240 vs 1515 = 81% retention DM3 vs Minions 1033 vs 1159 = 89% retention SW8 vs SW7 1375 vs 2070 = 65% retention All these franchises had both 2015 and 2017 releases.
  14. If this happens, Star Wars will have a worse retention rate among big franchises worldwide in 2017: FF8 vs FF7: 1240 vs 1515 = 81% DM3 vs Minions 1033 vs 1159 = 89% SW8 vs SW7 1375 vs 2070 = 66.4% All of these were 2015 vs 2017 releases interestingly
  15. This will be one of the box office shocks of 2017 no doubt. Making almost as much as BATB WW and less than Despicable Me 3 and BATB overseas is a surprise.
  16. To think that Jurassic World will end up with more WW than The Last Jedi WW is also very interesting. The power of Universal Studios in overseas markets is really evident (Jurassic, Despicable Me, Fast and Furious are monstrous overseas and consistently grab the cash almost in all markets).
  17. Overheard this casual conversation at the mall today between two mothers: - So did you guys go see Star wars? - Uh..no we went to see Jumaji first. Kids wanted to see that. Didn't have time for Star Wars. Jumaji was amazing! What about Star Wars did you see it? - Yea..didn't like it that much. I guess we'll go see Jumaji too. - Oh yes it's that good Here in Dubai, Jumaji is way busier. No one is really caring about Star wars - and the mechandise is barely selling, local toy store has been having the same stuff for over 2 weeks. For me., Jack Black was the real highlight of Jumaji. Kevin Hart also doesn't get enough credit - his last few live-action films all made 100m DOM or close to it.
  18. My new piece on Awardswatch is live. I interviewed Window Horses director here in Dubai.
