  1. Romulus's success in China is just a start. I think it's a great signal showing Hollywood and foreign movies are finally ready to be back to pre-pandemic era. Romulus catch or even create a trend that most recent Hollywood titles just missed. It make many audience feel novelty with its extreme violent and horror elements we hardly saw in the past. I wouldn't say the movie shares the best quality or experience, but it proves all we need is something not so common. So far, big movies this year like Dune II, IO2 all made somewhere between $45~60M (8~10 adm). GvK2, Boy and the Heron is exceptions. It's like HLW is back to the period of 2012~2013 when Avatar, Transformers, Iron Man 3 were the only ones breaking $100M. And I would say it's not impossible that we'll see $200 even $300M club movie in the next year as long as upcoming titles can follow the trend Romulus just started. TF4 with $300M box office revenue came right after that period.
  2. It might happen. Some already expected it to be NO.1 foreign movie of 2024 with $130M lifetime. I’m not gonna give a prediction until second weekend.
  3. Alien: Romulus is expected to make more on MON than FRI opening day in China FRI - $6.04M SAT - $8.96M SUN - $11.2M MON - $7.4M (projected)
  4. I saw some interviews saying it's more close to a movie with songs. I don't know. I mean, there is no way they can really hide it after Venice premiere. Maybe they try to avoid unnecessary controversy by controlling consciousness in early phase.
  5. In Chine, the new Alien title is tracking to see increase on Sunday. $10.5M vs $8.9M (SUN vs SAT)
  6. China is doing good business with Alien. $18~20M opening weekend. Lifetime record ($43M) for the franchise is coming.
  7. It's fine for me. Again, I do think it's Rogue One thing. A team of rookies get killed one by one with some references and CGI old character... I really think Disney has found a formula.
  8. I think this one is Rogue One of the franchise, giving audience one-time entertaining with new characters and event. And that’s why I don’t really believe studio will make it as a new beginning of a new storyline. Maybe we will see some characters back in potential future projects, but only a true bold Alien movie can bring new life the franchise really need to keep being active. No way Disney can keep making money from it by reusing familiar elements(even SW movies can’t make it). (I actually even think Scott try to give an update on his unfinished Prometheus thread in this one. )
  9. Aside those numbers, I read some reviews and know why some people really dig it while others have a great second thoughts (no spoiler). Fede Alvarez took a very different approach to the horror parts of this movie. It is less like the unseen fear from the first one but more close to B-level body horror such as Society, Braindead, Evil Dead -- torturing those characters and delivering a crazy spectacle in its 3rd act. (If you saw those horror movies I mentioned, you might be aware of what's coming.) In other words, if you're a body horror fan with desire to see how those characters get killed one by one, this is probably for you. (I think it explains why some say it's Rogue One of this franchise cuz there are very few character developments, except leading character get hero moments.) If you're an Alien fan with specific expectations based on previous movies, this new movie might fail you. It's a very different horror movie from previous Alien things. If you know Alien movies and have no special requirements for what's coming, I think you can enjoy this one. And those references could make you feel more happy.
  10. somehow I think I share a similar opinion with you. The sacredness around those elements of first one like Eywa has mostly gone in Way of Water. While I like the arc of Quaritch and his relationship with Spider, but his journey in that one could have been more epic and strange in a good way. Bringing us a more different perspective on Pandora & Na'vi.
  11. This is Cuarón on what Gravity had experienced after test screening this week. And somehow I think Mickey 17 has been in the same trouble with less luck.
  12. Incredibles live-action remake if it's good. Tomorrowland 2.0 if it's bad.
  13. I think Warner Bros. should pay the bill so they can tell Nolan that he is welcomed for coming back the real home anytime as long as he's tired of Universal.
  14. The movie is too bad. And actually John's performance is really good. I didn't even notice that until this one. He really carry all his scenes.
  15. Fandango just post the trailer. Guess not spoiler anymore? Definitely a great thread.
  16. TGM could have done well here. Cuz it's more like 90s Hollywood movies such as The Rock which local audience loved. A pity.
  17. You know what? Fall is exactly where The Incredibles opened 20 years ago. And I always thought there is big similarity between both of the movie.
  18. $1 billion or $1.3 billion. No difference for Marvel. Cuz my perspective is, what they need or care right now is not how to make a record-breaking movie. It's managing their production lines. D&W already prove they still can build hypes and get people into theaters. But it might mean nothing if their next few movies like Captain America 4 can't hit the mark and lose those money D&P earned.
