  1. What was obvious to me is that it was a cheeky joke by Bird, not any serious attempt at a twist.
  2. Damn I shoulda stuck with my initial 36.7m prediction for mamma mia doing the summer game weekly questions. The fanboys & reviews made me raise it to 44m, smh. At the same time I'm now rooting for bad legs cause my original top 15 prediction was 97m
  3. The "for the kids" comments are cracking me up. Oh noes a superhero flick that actually seems to know what to do and we can't even pretend it's our generation's The Godfather.
  4. I don't see why EOT is in this conversation. It was a great standalone sci-fi actioner that suffered from weak marketing and being released after Oblivion. It wasn't a non-VFX-driven action movie launching a franchise. Because he's the main attraction?
  5. It'll all depend on what the movie is. Weren't there reports that it's a Pulp Fiction-esque comedy/drama except 3 hours long? It could be a total wild card. Basterds, Django, Revenant all had easy hooks. Killin' Nazis, killin' slave owners, Leo survival + eye-catching Western action/spectacle. In OUATIH Leo is some actor dude in the '60s whose career is in a slump or something? The GA will need a hell of a lot more to be sold. As for Pitt he's just kinda been sitting on his ass as an actor since WWZ but in the right role I'm sure he'll still get people excited. And hopefully Ad Astra does well for him this winter.
  6. People packing theaters to watch a 4-hour Sergio Leone masterpiece over a cynical Disney remake/regurgitation is a beautiful thing to picture but it ain't happening
  7. How huge does this need to be? How huge do people expect it to be? Something like the first Ant-Man numbers would be just fine, no? It doesn't look like some huge-budget extravaganza or anything.
  8. I think this is the first superhero ever I knew absolutely nothing about before watching the trailer for his movie. Looks like a fun time.
  9. MI, Bourne, Bond and Mad Max were all new franchises once. People are concerned that MI won't last without Cruise but why should it? When someone is so tied to a series, to continue it without them is a futile proposition from the start. Hell, we've seen it play out with The Bourne Legacy. Better to create something new that can be built upon, except gather talented people to do it instead of doing a half-assed job. Bond is an exception here rather than the rule. And Mad Max is an even rarer case where the MVP of the franchise is the director rather than the star.
  10. You don't really lay back on a movie with a nine-figure budget and a decades-old brand name on it. What you're talking about is better suited to a small, one-and-done thing, like what Haywire was for Soderbergh.
  11. I still doubt I2 is gonna hit 600 btw. With MI6, Teen Titans and CR all hitting in the next two weeks, it's far more likely that it'll get to around 590 (that's counting the LD expansion) and Disney won't bother dragging it to 600.
  12. STBY just expanded more aggressively, which is why its been ahead. But this, its third weekend, is gonna give it about 2.6m which is the figure to which Kids and WWB only dropped in their respective fifth weekends. Afterwards, they added 6.8m and 8m respectively to their cume (WWB with the help of a late-August expansion), so if STBY follows them it'll finish at 17-18m. I think it'll come under that because its PTA is gonna drop over 50% this weekend and if theaters don't start dropping it next weekend they'll definitely be quick to do it in August.
  13. I don't see it expanding further so I think it'll start dropping from here. And Kids and WWB were more audience-friendly.
  14. Solid hold for Sorry to Bother You I have to say. This could get to 15m which is a win considering how wild the movie supposedly gets. Then it'll surely enjoy a long life as a cult movie.
  15. A movie where characters perform a bunch of songs is a musical. Doesn't matter how they go about it. By your logic Cabaret doesn't qualify as a musical.
  16. I occasionally have a bunch of people over at my place to watch movies and this one is gonna be a must in the near future just cause I wanna witness the reactions. Glad you dug it, and that you saw it unspoiled. My one gripe is that the old detective is obviously only there because of some form of censorship, as if the ending wouldn't have been allowed otherwise. Everything about him is so contrived.
