  1. Todd Haynes just can't catch a break in box office. At least it seems he got a lot of Amazon money to play with on set on this one. Maybe Roadside should have made this one of those movies they release in anywhere from 300-800 theaters. Especially with the PG rating and everything.
  2. Among A24's earlier releases it's tracking closest to The Lobster right now. I don't expect it to hit 10m until the Oscar nods are announced.
  3. Goddamn it Woody how can you even spend so much effort to NOT help your case any.
  4. I only just remembered that Jigsaw is from the guys behind Daybreakers and Predestination. Well. Hope they enjoyed the paycheck
  5. Him dissing Tom Hardy like that might be the best argument against Futurist yet I think.
  6. They write these things called reviews where they presumably explain it.
  7. This, ignoring the demand of the people to change the thread name... It's like @Water Bottle gets off on being withholding
  8. We actually didn't make it to 100,000 posts in the last thread. Shoulda waited until we hit page 5,001
  9. It's from the "sander" part of Alexander. The "Sa" plus the commonly used diminutive "sha" gives you Sasha. The same way you get Sandy in English. May not be obvious but it's still not as headache-inducing as Margaret > Peggy or whatever.
  10. Even if it were shown it'd be in limited release and the numbers would be nothing to write home about. Not to mention it'd be dubbed like 99% of movies are, and much of the humor would get lost in the process. Most obvious/likely scenario is that film buffs will torrent it en masse, no one else will know or care. Also, two things for general understanding, not necessarily directed just at you: 1) Putin doesn't make decisions about which movies to distribute or ban, the people creating controversies and looking to prevent movies from being shown are lower-level officials who either genuinely believe that "society" needs to be protected from their evil western influence or simply want to get their name in the news, or both; 2) "Vlad" is not a short form of Vladimir, and in fact is much more likely to be used as a name in Romania and Moldova than it is in Russia.
  11. Huppert was the only one better than Negga in last year's line-up.
  12. Oh and I hope to see more good stuff from Glen Powell too. He should play every role with '80s hair and 'stache though.
  13. Jack O'Connell had such great raw charisma in Starred Up and '71. And then what did Hollywood have to give him? Unbroken, Money Monster and Tulip Fever. Sadly hilarious tbh, but I hope he comes back with quality material. Add Timothee Chalamet to the list if the hype is to be believed. I don't know if Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a great actor but he showed in Nocturnal Animals that he can be one. Rory Culkin gave one of the best lead male performances in recent years in Gabriel, unfortunately barely anyone saw that movie.
  14. Mostly I just thought it was dreadfully self-serious and overdone. I was with it during the early scenes, especially liked the scene in the bar with James Badge Dale and the group of women they're trying to impress/pick up, which had a kind of loose energy the rest of the movie didn't. But then it just devolved into laughable melodrama. I guess my overall problem is that it swings between two extremes - first presenting Fassbender as a guy who has the power to make women wet just by staring at them, and then quickly going as far as to have him cry during orgasms and accept random blowjobs from men and fall to his knees in the rain and wail because PAIN and MISERY. And then there's the implication of childhood abuse as a half-assed explanation of sorts, which is neither here nor there. Any serious exploration of sex addiction gets lost in the process imo.
  15. I think it's awful. But Fassbender is the only real reason to see it. Yeah. I'm as cynical about studios as anyone but what I don't understand is essentially killing and burying your own movie - that you already poured an eight-figure budget into - by not allowing the director to do something as basic as finish shooting the script. I mean, what?
