  1. I didn't even like Tinker Tailor that much but Tomas Alfredson was still the biggest reason I had hopes for this. Bummer. And I guess Rebecca Ferguson will have gone the full three years between her M:I films without finding an opportunity to really deliver on that promise.
  2. I still haven't seen Get Out but with the overall amount of talk about it re: Oscars I find it a little surprising that no one around here has namedropped Daniel Kaluuya at all. I thought it was supposed to be really solid work, and if the film proves to be popular at the end of the year, maybe he could sneak in? I seriously want Harry Dean Stanton to be nominated. The chances of it right now are slim to none but c'mon Magnolia at least send out a bunch of screeners all over the place so they don't have an excuse if they snub him.
  3. I see Nolan isn't crazy about that three-month window between theater and home release. Wouldn't have expected anything less from him
  4. It'll probably expand in the next few weeks. Almost all WB releases do.
  5. No, it means that actors of color on the whole still aren't getting nearly enough meaty showcase-type roles in films. The lack of Oscar recognition for them is more of a symptom than the disease, but it's an easy target for critics as a supposed celebration of the best the movie year had to offer.
  6. This century Master and Commander and Gangs of New York are the only other Best Picture nominees that didn't make back their $100m+ budget in the U.S.
  7. It's always fun to get those disruptive moments where you can tell the audience has no clue how to react.
  8. True but with Zhora he also can't stick with a single story for more than a minute and exposes himself almost immediately even before any fighting starts. And when he kills her it's by shooting her in the back.
  9. I just rewatched the original last week and he's a lot like Indiana Jones there too. An awkward doofus who only ever achieves anything due to a combination of luck and dumb persistence, and seems cooler than he is because he looks like Harrison Ford.
  10. Among indie/foreign films I'd say Loving Vincent has a strong chance of getting in and so does Mary and the Witch's Flower (GKids has acquired it for a "winter release" so presumably they're pushing it this year even if there's still no commercial release date).
  11. I still haven't even begun putting together the preseason for this. #Winning made me lazy and arrogant it's time for the fall part of the rise and fall story
  12. Director I would be seriously doubting even if it had opened big. Picture who knows. Again even with a healthy BO there would have been factors against it, bleak tone + slow pace + dependance on 35-year-old predecessor is a combination that none of the recent blockbuster nominees had to overcome.
  13. If you wanna be optimistic there's movies like Hugo and Master and Commander both of which bombed relative to the budget but each got 10 Oscar nods and won a few. I don't think BR49 is gonna get near that, but also don't see how the box office is gonna make it less likely for it to win cinematography and maybe a couple of other techs.
