  1. I think I'm gonna sit this one out after all. Maybe answer some weeklies for fun, but no preseason. Still a little game'd out after the summer, and I simply haven't had any time lately. You kids have fun. I wanna see blood. BTW, I've learned that if you win this thing and tell Chas that you're always on a lookout for classic musicals, he's gonna send you an old Czech DVD of Cannibal: The Musical in reply. He's that kinda guy. Just so you know
  2. Saw V has a reputation for being one of the very worst in the franchise but I'll take it over 4 and probably even 3.
  3. Inside Out could have been a real hit if only it weren't for Jurassic World
  4. Eh. I never liked that guy when he was writing for /Film and though I haven't seen 4-7 yet I suspect he's being full of shit here too. From the first till the end of the third movie the repetitive elements only get more tiresome, and the larger story they're tripping over themselves to build isn't worth much.
  5. Definitely not worth it unless you're a gorehound or someone is paying you
  6. Saw II had my eyes rolling at it early on when it began like some CSI bullshit but by the end it grew on me somewhat. The scenes with people trying to survive in the house are weird because most of them are hateful assholes and/or dumbasses and they spend most of their time yelling at and chasing each other around which becomes really grating. But Tobin Bell is pretty fun doing a B-movie impression of John Doe and Keyser Soze simultaneously. Shawnee Smith is hot. Donnie Wahlberg is like Mark, if Mark had no charisma or personality whatsoever. Didn't see the final twist coming (well, I almost never do) and dug it. The jumpy editing is fucking ridiculous. Saw III gets props for making the torture scenes legitimately nightmarish (if you're gonna go there, might as well go as far as you can). At the same time the revenge-centered plotline is unintentionally comical when someone is suffering ungodly pain right in front of the main dude and he just paces back and forth trying to decide if he forgives them enough to try and save them. Amanda who was fun and cool in Saw II gets reduced to alternating between weepy and psychotic. And it has no business being almost 2 hours long are you kidding me.
  7. Whoa that's Bob Benson right there. Was he great or not great?
  8. Mark Rylance and Mahershala Ali both won for very subdued work.
  9. Got assigned to review Jigsaw. Because I'm way too conscientious and responsible for my own good, I shall now proceed to watch all six previous sequels over two days. This should be some kind of an experience.
  10. It looks like it might go pretty dark when Vicky Krieps' character is no longer content just being DDL's pretty doll. I saw a comparison to Vertigo elsewhere, and while it didn't occur to me there potentially can be something to that. And if PTA plays up that emotional darkness and ugliness against the familiar visual language of stuffy period costume dramas that could be really potent, although I don't wanna get ahead of myself and the movie here.

  13. I dunno if it's gonna have quite enough passion. It's not a movie from a popular fanboy genre that people spend months obsessing over. I don't doubt it'll be in top 3, but I can see Shape of Water or Get Out pulling out a win in the end. Or maybe even Last Jedi.
  14. DDL looks great as usual in the Phantom Thread trailer so he should be in unless the movie is somehow a total dud.
  15. Still think Hawkins is more likely to win Actress since she's been around longer and has her own showy challenge playing a mute character. Robbie might be #2 though.
  16. 15 people gave mother! an A in RTM, and while I didn't it's been growing on me. Can see it making my top 10 in the end.
  17. I was wondering if the trailer would show much in the way of subversion of that whole stiff-upper-lip prestige British costume drama, Great Man and his much younger muse and lover type of story that the premise is selling, and it looks even more fascinating because it doesn't really. It's always interesting when an idiosyncratic and sharp filmmaker goes for the type of film generally seen as uncool and boring, and I'm looking forward to seeing how PTA explores the people behind these archetypes (because it's nearly impossible to imagine that he doesn't). It looks gorgeous, anyway, and even in these small snippets DDL already reminds what a treasure he is.
