  1. 1. 12 Years a Slave 2. The Artist 3. Spotlight 4. Argo 5. King's Speech 6. Birdman La La Land is better than all of them.
  2. Ironically it was exactly the year where, among the films that had a realistic shot, the stuffy historical biopic (Lincoln) deserved the win, because it was actually lively and well-executed, just the right mix of respectful and entertaining. (I think ZDT was by far the best overall but it had no chance).
  3. Spotlight is really solid, the only thing that holds me back from loving it is the times where it breaks its supposed discipline with things like Ruffalo's monologuing. Of the four big contenders last year it's only behind MMFR, yeah. In a just world Liev Schreiber would have swept the supporting actor awards. An even more perfect example of less-is-more acting than Rylance in Bridge of Spies. The Artist may not have a lot on its mind but it's a sincere and unpretentious love letter with some clever touches. And if it got anyone in the modern audience more into silent cinema, even better.
  4. I would much rather rewatch The Artist than The King's Speech, Argo, Birdman, or even Spotlight. It's a good fun movie.
  5. I generally really like him but I share the common sentiment that he cannot disappear into roles (and his best recent work, like Wolf of Wall Street, comes when his off-screen persona is incorporated/subverted in some way). In his age range alone guys like Joaquin Phoenix, Oscar Isaac, Shannon are far more impressive actors even without his resume.
  6. I forgot the SAG thing. Still think he was probably #3 in the end though. Regardless, looking at all the performances I've seen from the year, Fassbender is the only one who was anywhere close to deserving even a nomination. And he still wouldn't have been in my top 5.
  7. Huppert, unlike Riva, has been an incredibly active presence in movies over several decades, is legitimately one of the few living legends among actors, and has been very visible over the past couple of months too. Problem is that Stone by this point has also been prominent for about 5 years more than Lawrence when she won, and her role is arguably more showy than Lawrence's in SLP as well.
  8. The category is called best performance by an actor in a leading role. Whoever they think gave that performance, should win. The end.
  9. My best case scenario of what can plausibly happen: Picture: La La Land Director: Chazelle Actor: Affleck Actress: Huppert Supporting Actor: Ali Supporting Actress: Davis Original Screenplay: Manchester Adapted Screenplay: Moonlight Animated: Zootopia Documentary: OJ Foreign: Toni Erdmann Cinematography: La La Land Editing: La La Land Production Design: Fantastic Beasts Costume Design: Fantastic Beasts Makeup: Star Trek Beyond Score: La La Land Song: City of Stars (La La Land) VFX: Jungle Book Sound Editing: Hacksaw Ridge Sound Mixing: Hacksaw Ridge
  10. 1. Shannon 2. Bridges 3. Ali 4. Patel Haven't seen Hedges yet but since Patel's performance like Lion as a whole is a big pile of nothing I'm sure he's at least #4.
  11. Looks like Disney doesn't wanna fuck around with fudging Moana to 250m. It's been putting up some crazy PTAs recently.
  12. The Wailing had some great visuals and went by really quickly but it really hasn't stuck in my mind at all. Wasn't a fan of Demon and straight up disliked The Eyes of My Mother. Didn't see I Am Not A Serial Killer but I assumed it wasn't really horror but more of a comedy/thriller hybrid or something. Pretty Thing had those wonky flashbacks/backstory but aside from that it was the creepiest thing I've seen in ages. Watching the telephone cord scene I felt like it was a movie made specifically for me. Probably as close as modern horror could come to The Innocents, and even then only on Netflix money. Looking forward to Autopsy of Jane Doe and especially to Raw. And, well, to Get Out although it doesn't have a release date here so that might not happen till summer.
  13. I see some people here haven't met Jessie yet or maybe forgotten who he is. I think It Follows is the only one of the really hyped up recent indie horror flicks that didn't fully deliver to me. The Babadook and The Witch are both among my favorites of the decade. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House is another one I love and can't stop namedropping even though 80% of this board would probably hate it.
  14. A $4m Friday will give Lego Batman a $17-17.5m weekend if it follows The Lego Movie, and if John Wick follows Safe House it gets roughly the same 52-54% drop and a $7.5m weekend.
