  1. I never said blockbusters can't be classics. So you actually have no real point. Go back and read my posts, nowhere does it say blockbusters can't be... I said Feige isn't interested in striving for something outside of popcorn action. Which is true. I also said he doesn't have to, he's all about making as much money for Disney as possible and that's fine for him. Some people are about money and others are about money but also the art.
  2. The funny thing about this post is that you had to go back 30 years because you weren't confident enough to list an MCU movie and not get laughed out of the room. Point validated.
  3. I'm glad you brought up Fury Road. that movie has more to say about society without uttering a word than most Hollywood blockbusters. All the viewer has to do is pay attention to what they are seeing on screen and the pieces fit together very nicely. Love that film.
  4. The point is...... why not both? The fact is it's a movie that is going to appeal to general audiences, it will certainly have a ceiling with the R rating but it's also a movie that obviously is appealing to the "indie crowd" as you put it.. otherwise it wouldn't be in consideration for the golden lion. They made the decision to green light this project and it's a very modest budget.... when MCU does the same maybe we will talk about that but they haven't yet so we'll see.
  5. Simply breezing over a political topic like what was going on with surveillance and the NSA is not what I would call "smart"... if the movie did a deep dive study into it and displayed real social commentary than was worth discussing then I could see it but at the end of the day the movie is remembered more for action sequences that were in some ways influenced by Heat. It's a great movie.. I LOVE Winter Soldier but even when you look at the 3rd act, it's big huge Hollywood explosions and big budget CGI.. it's not saying a lot there other than hey check out this action porn.
  6. Who said anything about Aquaman? But to your point, Aquaman made over $1.1 billion at the box office, it was one of the highest grossing comic origins ever.... The Dark Knight trilogy wasn't long ago, DC/WB can obviously make movies that end up making a ton of money.. But with Joker they decided to go a different route with it and it will make money but it's rated R so it's going to probably take a little off the top but on the back end the executives will be at Oscar parties and yucking it up with Hollywood people who are astonished that a movie based on comic book characters achieve such high praise. MCU isn't interested in any of that apparently and they don't have to be, their goal is money and more money. They have achieved that.
  7. LMFAO @ 'Endgame. ' To your second point, I said Feige doesn't have to care, their lane is popcorn and it's widely successful. But then there are people like Cuaron who excel at their craft and it's not all about money.. it's about the art. I can guess by reading your post that you have no appetite for art and that's fine, you don't have to. Nobody says you have to enjoy anything at the movies beyond popcorn productions. I respect a guy like Todd Phillips. He already had hugely successful movies with modest budgets, already had two of the highest grossing R-rated films domestically and then said "you know that's cool but I want to do more" and now he's in the running at Venice. Beautifully done.
  8. So to put a bow on the discussion, do I have hopes that the MCU will ever strive for more than popcorn fun? No.. probably not. They are extremely successful in that lane and I don't think they have the urge to switch things up. That's fine for them,.. they don't have to make a classic movie, their goal is money. As a moviegoer, I think it's possible to do both but they aren't interested.
  9. Black Panther didn't win any major categories. It was nominated for a couple biggies but the wins were for original score, costume design and production design which is great and well deserved. I don't believe the MCU has ever had an acting performance nominated for an Oscar. I don't remember the MCU being nominated in any screenplay categories either. But they don't have to.. there's a difference between monetary success and accolades. Some people want nothing but monetary success, others want accolades to add on to their resume, validating their achievements in their craft. Feige doesn't seem concerned about achievements and nobody says he has to be. It depends on who you are. Are you out to make money or are you out to gain recognition from your peers? You can do both... that's why I laugh at the notion of only money mattering... athletes will always trade in a few dollars for a championship ring.
  10. I don't care if other families hated it or not... it's awful and the critics were right in my view. No emotion at all. This was the one cash grab that I thought might be decent but nah....
  11. Aladdin was one of my favorite movies as a kid. The thought of them doing a live action was appealing. And then they put out a piece of crap like they usually do. I think The Lion King has a chance to be really good because it's only animals. Most of these are terrible.
  12. Man what the hell, really? Aladdin is my favorite of all the Disney animated classics and of course this is one where people aren't feeling it.
  13. I was saying that for weeks, WB didn't market it well at all. It's going to gain more of a following during it's digital release probably but they dropped the ball with the theater run.
  14. Years later same posters still invoking conversation surrounding Snyder. Whether people hated them or were among those that liked them, I'd say 99% moved on and yet there are the few who can't seem to let it go. It's still a weekly occurrence in here. 🤣
  15. I just don't know what it needs to do though? It's going to pass Avatar and it's going to be #2 domestic. Maybe it should have been #1 but I think they'll be okay with the $3 billion.
  16. Well, I'm out. Some here will be happy with that development so they can go back to discussions without being challenged and that's fine.. I have better things to do because obviously there are way too many people fearful of a simple box office comparison on a day where End Game surpassed said movie we are discussing no less... Enjoy.
  17. How is a comparison of two movies concern trolling and how is an opinion "movie A is better than movie B" an example of someone being "butthurt". Titanic won Best Picture and here you are to say it's ridiculous that someone would feel it's a better made film lol
  18. Where in the rules does it state that End Game cannot be compared to movies that came before it? Titanic is a "fan war" movie now? It's not even a franchise.. it's one movie that came out in the 90s. This is what I mean about the discourse. People are uncomfortable with comparisons. It's moved past a Marvel, DC or Star Wars etc. thing.. Now we can't compare this to Titanic lol.
  19. We already have a calculation of what it would make in 2019 and it's way more than 500 million.
  20. What competition are we talking about? It's had two consecutive weeks unopposed. I'm far from a "Cameron-stan". If I had to watch End Game right now or Titanic right now I'd choose End Game, I find it to be more enjoyable. I think Titanic is a better made film but not one that holds the same replay value for me. Trying to paint everyone as a "stan" is concerning. That is only going to further crater the discourse.
  21. They don't need to receive the adjusted figures, if they received their profits and just threw them in an account and left them there for 20 years they'd have a lot more now than they would then.
  22. It's not hypothetically.. they are real numbers for what they are meant to be, it's not someone's guess. Well, so you want to be dismissive of it okay that's fair, do you.
