  1. According to is linked: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottmendelson Film studies at school. Worked a little bit in movies but doing Dvd quality control, than just film criticism for magazine, so no expertise at all it seem, and I do not remember ever reading anything from him that would show. Maybe he did talk more to some actual expert than the average contributor here, but otherwise do not seem to have anything in is background to make him more expert at it than the average BOT member. Not knowing about a Canada holiday boost make it even look like he do not have has access to numbers than some users here.
  2. Not a crazy thought, considering Toy Story 4 is in there also and a documentary series will launch for Frozen 2 on it, maybe that why 2019 is so charged and 2020 feel slimmer.
  3. I imagine that maybe the dubbed version inspired themselve a lot from Williams (but in many language he was too fast to follow and needed quite the altered version if I remember comments from the people dubbing him in french), but that movie did monster business and was beloved by non-English speaking people all around the world.
  4. It is certainly true, that said arguably no one is either, Smith opened 2 not big franchise (even one original with Hancock I think) heavy nor sequel movie to over 60m in a row without 3D in is A-day (I am legend 77m, Hancock 62m) while not being domestic heavy at all. 77m 2007 dollar is 95m 2019 dollar. I Am legend, 7 pounds, MIB3, After Earth in a row is probably what did it, compounded effect with After earth being the cerise on the Sunday, it was already going down for is brand if he openned a 144m budget giant SCi-fi spectacle under 30m, 2008 Smith would have went over 35m no matter pretty much what with that I imagine. The last movie he got a A- or better cinemascore and great legs was pursuit of happyness (outside Concussion), last 70% or more on RT in 1998 with Enemy of the State.
  5. Gatsby was quite the "franchise", it is one of the most popular book of all time adaptation. But yeah this will have some real event hook, the cast, the glorious review, giant marketing, could see Gravity/The Martian opening happening like a much bigger A Star is Born. Once events status is achieved and sheepish part of our brain get activated, who knows....
  6. Everyone doing signature correctly in the joke is kind of emphasizing the point, how easy it is to make your signature look like one.
  7. Why a bunch of uppercase letter in a message (and not outside of it) is irritating to some, like nails on a chalkboard or all lowercase message, there is no logical explanation.
  8. If it showed like a signature it would not be grating, but on my computer it show has if part of the message.
  9. There is some speech pattern that are more prevalent among English speaking gay men. https://web.archive.org/web/20071101043238/http://www.newsandevents.utoronto.ca/bin2/020218c.asp https://magazine.utoronto.ca/research-ideas/culture-society/the-gay-voice-why-do-some-gay-men-talk-different/ https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2015/11/where-did-gay-lisp-stereotype-come Enough that study that will record a number of men and ask people listening to the recording to identify gay and straight among the group they statistically do better than randomness pick would do. But obviously like for everything, the study is clear that: Not all gay men sound gay, perhaps fewer than half, Rogers says. “It was interesting that the straightest-sounding voice in the study was in fact a gay man and the sixth gayest-sounding voice was a straight man. It’s quite ordinary for gay men not to sound gay and every now and then you find a straight man who sounds gay.” Has for the acting in a movie should never be obvious for the watcher that the person is gay or not by how the person dress, act, speech. One would think that, but actually it is a controversial debate to have only represent could pass hetero a la Dave Rubin and never having them sounding and looking gay. https://medium.com/th-ink/the-internalized-homophobia-of-straight-acting-gay-men-82012d5ddc87 Straight passing gays do really well in today society, they make more money than straight people in average. Apparently the issue is more for non straight passing gays: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-envy-that-dare-not-speak-its-name_b_59dcb080e4b0a1bb90b830db It is not just some made up false stereotype, that why in Love Simon you have him talk to a non straight passing gay teenager about it and it was easy to understand.
  10. What does that acronym I see popping on the message board mean ? Google do not seem to know.
  11. That spoiling the fact the movie have a big spoiler need to stop........ knowing and looking for a surprise can remove a lot of it.
  12. Like I said top show rating is different than how much tv is watched (in my sub-canadian market it is even crazier, we get higher than Superbowl market share rating type for some weekly shows, but there is only 2 popular channel).
  13. I am not sure anyone watch and/or spend more on TV than Americans: Specific show TV ratings will depend a lot of the size of the offer and heterogeneity in demand, etc.... Americans have really a specially giant offer on TV and a lot of people having a lot of channels versus the rest of the world. Has for Canada average dom of the box office it depend on the exchange rate and all that but you can expect around 9-10%: https://www.statista.com/statistics/501797/canada-box-office-revenue/ in 2012: 1094 of 10,837.6, 10.1% 2014: 945.8 of 10,361.3, 9.13% 2015: 988 of 11,129.4, 8.88%
  14. I feel like Reeve work can be easy to get underestimated, in the Matrix for example is changed is body quite often direct the shoot (you have buff matrix, our world character and just get unplugged from the matrix thin in the "real" world version), even if acting is for a big part just being photographed that part is often not too considered.
  15. Lol, that what pass for being a Diva nowaday... no distraction during a shoot: “She refuses to do interviews, she won’t have visitors on her sets. It’s like a cliché. She is very talented — but all signs are pointing to a difficult diva.”
  16. I imagine part of it is building/maintaining their second biggest source of revenues after television (20B last year's), decade of World Park audience. https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2018/12/video-sneak-peek-at-beauty-and-the-beast-attraction-coming-to-tokyo-disneyland/ By keeping properties up to date to newer generation of kids, in that context trying to save or not 20m on the movie in charge of that is really different that if you are in the movie business and make money or not from them. And it is a remake of one of the most beloved property, after Jungle Book/Beast success (in good part if not mostly due to the giant quality of the production), those high budget for them make a lot of sense.
  17. You think he was not the first one asked ? MIB 3 lost the studio money and an other one would have almost certainly been with a deal to cut cost (like Inferno), hard to imagine Rothman saying yes to a deal that make Smith interested (must want 50M minimum to get involved in those, like on Independence day if not more considering he did that one already 3 times)
  18. If Suicide Squad was average, I became curious of which editing, production design, photography etc... choice would have been needed to go on the below average scale for you.
  19. It is not the kind of property I would go much cheaper, but maybe they did (and that would hurt them a lot imo if they did) https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/09359156/filing-history They spent 97.8m pound by february 2018 on it. Massive post-production and reshoot in August
  20. For me all that JW 3 success make a lot of sense, it is a superhero movie in what look like a comic book adaptation, what is harder to explain is how low the first one went (I remember back in the days thinking that JW and Deadpool should play quite similar lol, like 40m OW each).
  21. There is opinion and than there is taste. I think John Wick 3 will make 4.5 times it OW at the box office is an opinion that suck. Liked or not the movie is more a taste than an opinion.
  22. Because no movie ever came close, we are facing two 2 options. Not judging the legs at all, nothing to base it with. Go with the best thing one can think of, giant openner with large previews and big accumulated resistance (Civil War, last Potter part 2, Infinity War, etc...)
  23. Just someone that had seen less than 5 of the MCU then. I know a lot of people that have seen none of those movies. Maybe we just have a very different bar of what someone not invested in the saga is (someone that have seen more than 10 of those MCU is invested in it), considering your avatar and going to Avengers theme party, maybe you think I am speaking of someone that have seen all the Avengers but do not read comics and do not talk a lot about it or something. I am not sure why seem now your pure speculation of how reassuring to other would be first MCU movie of their life the WOM is (that would be needed for such a big OW to have a not really low multi)
