  1. I doubt that. I doubt that, it is easy to mix correlation with causation, people said that about Reynolds for a while and were in hindsight quite quite wrong (I think I even saw Statham being talked like that before Meg). How many good movie with an interesting commercial proposition, good review and good marketing he stared in flopped ? Those flop had 13% to 45% on rotten tomatoes, it could be a mistake to over read into a movie like Black Hat or Heart of the sea flopping, even the less appealing entry without strong pre-awareness power on DiCaprio sheet didn't do that well. When very well received affair like Drive/Blade Runner/First Man do not take off, that a stronger signal. He is not a Kevin Hart/Denzel/Dwayne Johnson type of draw or even Cruise or barely one at all, but I am not sure he is a strong toxic presence a la Sandler (Sandler do come with a strong fanbase to compensate) one way or an other, I do not think he is signaling much to audience at all either way.
  2. They are quite rarer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_feature_film_series_with_four_entries Quick look and MadMax 90-98-80-97 is one with an high average after Toy Story.
  3. Will see, but yes TS3 was much more family heavy than I2 (and I2 had a much bigger OW). Incredible 2: Jokes aside, families naturally accounted for 57% of audiences. Those under the age of 11 made up 26% of moviegoers, with a basically even male-female split, while 31% were adults and 11% were teens. Toy story 3: According to distributor Walt Disney Pictures' exit polling, Toy Story 3's audience was 54 percent under 25 years old and evenly split between genders, while families (parents and their children) made up 67 percent. Disney pointed out that 40 percent of the non-family audience was aged 17-24, people who presumably grew up with Toy Story.
  4. Was it much more possible back in 2010,? no movie had it's 10th wide weekend anywhere close to Avatar 16m from 2005 to 2012, closest was Lincoln with 5,475,263 I think and that was a special holiday weekend helping it. If we remove Avatar did blockbuster movie in that era were having run significantly better than say Jumanji ? Direct sequel cannot play like an Avatar like run in this day and age, but could not just 10 year,s ago either.
  5. I am very suspicious of any Hemsworth curse (people have been wrong about the Ryan Reynolds curse are again falling into the very easy to get trap for an human that correlation == causation here), there is a big original or tired franchise without good trailers or any obviously interesting/hooking high concept proposition curse almost for sure too.
  6. I am a bit curious who they here Potter went up at number 4 4th is still the biggest James Bond Mission impossible / Jurassic Park / Indiana Jones 4 did really well Star Trek/Star Wars 4......
  7. Played quite a bit during the big basketball game yesterday, even had a special featuring the broadcast commentators and nba players.
  8. And Friends was on NBC I imagine there is a difference between who distribute in a specific region (in my country the show was on CTV I think) and who own it ? Big Bang Theory picture were pretty much always present on the Warner annual report, so I assumed it was WB television produced. Wikipedia say: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Bang_Theory Production company(s) Chuck Lorre Productions Warner Bros. Television Distributor Warner Bros. Television Distribution According to wiki: Warner Bros. Television controls the online rights for the show.
  9. Big Bang Theory and the spin off is an other big one I imagine (and the classic The Wire, Sopranos)..
  10. I am not sure what it has to do with the original point at all. He talked to Horn and Iger about the movie project and talk like if he needed their support (i.e. that if they did not supported the project it would not have happened). To be an independent division you make the movie or acquire it in a festival and Disney does not know about it, never seen it, etc... Possibly will refuse to distribute it once they saw it, it is a different mechanics.
  11. I am redeading and he is clearly saying that he had full support from Disney, could be lying but Disney was almost certainly put in the loop. “The budget for Black Panther was bigger than Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, and you can’t do that without the support and encouragement from the leaders of the company, I do not suppose he has a 300m greenlight power on a entity that valuable. The very concept of Fox Searchlight movies is to not need support and encouragement from the company.
  12. That is not what he told the press, he even thanking them for having saying yes to the project if I remember correctly, like if they were put on the loop and had to say ok to it. fight/Ask/get permission is irrelevant here, the existence of the feedback itself and the meeting about it, must not exist. Those division are working if from time to time Disney will refuse to release a movie after the fact when they see it once it is done (like it happened from time to time in the Weinstein days)
  13. I would imagine no, that it will stay much more independant than LucasFilm/Marvel and not have a Feige having to fight and beg Disney to greenlight Black Panthers. The budgets are quite different and there is no billions IP in play here. It is not about not having day to day interference for the movie Disney gave their ok to, it is not having to ask Disney or even tell them what movie you are doing or being able to bid before the movie even finish playing at a festival without having called anyone working at Disney.
  14. Did they really put Fox Searchlight logo at the start of Dark Phoenix ? Wikipedia, mojo, imdb do not mention it, that would quite be quite ridiculous, do you have source or you went to see it ? It is not of course that Disney will close Fox Searchlight and turn it into something they control a la Touchstone, the very concept of that type of division is being independent of the main division, different staff, etc... that can take decision and greenlight/acquire project (up to a certain budget and a certain numbers during a year) without having to ask permission and being told what to do. The second Disney get involved in a decision outside the above, they effectively stopped FSL and it does not make any sense anymore.
  15. If Disney ever use Fox Searchlight label it will be the very end of the concept itself and of the FSL studio no ?
  16. The Avatar Special Edition Made 33.2m, I would imagine canon being so important to the MCU that they will not do that for EndGame too.
  17. All those numbers looked optimistic even before the RT score came out.
  18. This is true in a regardless of how phenomenal for the people that have seen enough of the previous entry to appreciate it for most of the run time, but even a lesser WOM but a different one (you do not need to have seen any of the previous one to enjoy it).... But can this be possible, exciting people so much to open at 350m without being based on recent previous entry, not so sure. Force Awaken/Jurassic World being special case, achieved giant hype of a long franchise but was borderline a reboot at the same time. For example back in the days of Civil War, we had the multi is good for a weekend that big, this will (I imagine) beat by a little bit Civil War multiplier with an OW twice has big, clearly going into the direction that Civil War low multi was more than just about is big OW and a lot to do with new audience resistance (like for this, but this one legs helped by record setting buzz)
  19. Are you the Godzilla is looking to make 900m from the OW numbers guy ?
  20. That could be a "complex" calculation, you probably want to reward Marvel studio and everyone involved with that trivia honor moment, but at what cost and so on, probably ready to spend quite a bit to make them happy.
  21. I doubt they ever transfer record in their mind like that and I imagine what matter for the group of people currently in charge is what they did themselve has a group of people, not Disney (why would they particularly care about Disney at all ?) Turner buying MGM didn't really gave them the all time biggest movie record in accomplishment.
  22. The Mummy, Planet of the apes, Cars, Friday the 13th all got some since Ghostbuster. Mad Max was a "big one" in 2015, Amazing Spider Man also and the Lego movies game. Now a day, home console probably mean very little (considering the buying of games is online and often a low price exactly like on a mobile).
