I get why people are very invested in Zendaya as a movie star, mainly cause she seems to be one of the few hopes of a return to movie stars of past generations. It's just not going to happen the same way it did back in the 90s though and no amount of social media hype is going to return us to Julia Roberts.

The thing is Air wasn't even going to get a theatrical release until something like January of that year and most people would not consider that film a financial success theatrically at all. Challengers delayed its release from 2023 so it could allow its stars to do a large scale international press tour so I do think they had some expectation it would benefit at the box office. DWD number I think would've been a reasonable target.

The Box Office Buzz, Tracking, and Pre-Sale Thread

MI7's release date is so confusing. So its doing like a limited true 7pm previews on Monday and the full opening day is a Tuesday??? -
Obviously none of these people are real movie stars of yesteryear but they definitely could've utilized a younger star that actually got some buzz going w/ Gen Z & millennials. Maybe they still wouldn't have turned out in large numbers cause the reviews were meh but large swaths of the internet clearly take note of what actors like Tom Holland, Anya Taylor Joy, Florence Pugh, Zendaya, etc do. A lot of their red carpet appearances and interviews go viral. PWB does not have that kind of appeal right now cause she didn't really take advantage of her Fleabag fame well imo. I mean look at Margot on the Barbie press tour! Every single outfit she's worn gets her trending in the 10s of thousands.

I'm a big fan of her TV work but she hasn't done anything of note in film (her writing credit on Bond is probably not known to many). Maverick was smart to put Miles Teller and Glenn Powell in there. The Mission Impossible movies add younger actors constantly to mix things up with Cruise and the older crew like Kirby, Atwell, etc.

That just shows you the terrible missed potential. Of course Superman is way bigger than Thor and Captain America who got springboarded off Avengers to have more successful solo films. There's no reason WB should've let Marvel turn their B-listers into bigger box office stars than their A-lister. Its criminal mismanagement.

What I don't get is why they didn't get an appealing younger actor to pair with Harrison Ford. A Tom Holland type would've made so much sense and could've helped bridge the generation gap. Phoebe Waller Bridge is now several years removed from Fleabag (an acclaimed but kind of niche show) and she really hasn't done anything of note since.
