  1. Unexpected and surprisingly good trailer mixed with a dapper man piloting a sexy machine = success!
  2. They've already sold the cool factor of Cruise doing his own stunts. Now, they need to sell this as the perfect marriage of technology between state of the art cinema and a front row seat into one of the most thrilling experiences of modern human engineering. I know Dunkirk did a damn fine job, but this is like a well oiled machine compared to Dunkirk's classical aviation. Yes, it's a throwback. There's the tint of nostalgia, but they need to ensure that the audience knows that what they're providing is a considerable leap from Tom pretending to be flying in a fake cockpit while the camera shakes around to give the illusion of movement. That's not a knock against the original. I love the original in all of its cheesy chest bumping glory. It's just we have different demands these days.
  3. I am personally getting goosebumps just thinking about witnessing Maverick break the sound barrier in IMAX with no special effects required.
  4. The most pressing question right now is... ...How soon will I be able to witness this trailer in IMAX?
  5. The cinematography. The score. The Cruise. Exquisite. However, I must keep my expectations in check. Kosinski makes good looking films that are rather dull with the human element. Than again, it's Top Gun. Hyped!
  6. There's something lacking in the trailer. I think it's just poorly edited. It throws all of these characters at you without any clear indication of what type of genre it is. If "whodunnit" wasn't included as a title card, I'd be a bit aloof as to what to think about this. Performances and visuals look good. This is more than likely a case of a good film getting a relatively weak trailer.
  7. If Taxidermia were given a wide release, it might end up similar to this. I don't see how this film becomes more than a cult curiosity on home video. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I'm just saying that's where it's heading.
  8. Gods and Monsters is a favorite of mine. I relatively enjoyed Kinsey and Mr. Holmes, but this looks like an excellent mystery thriller. I am interested.
  9. Cary Fukunaga makes one of the most searing war dramas in a war torn country on a budget that would look small back in the 70's, British media can't handle the fact that he's probably trying to make the best product possible without some shitty boy toy British actor that is currently generating hype FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER.
  10. My favorite entry in the series currently sits at 44 percent. It sounds like Hamill nailed the voice with plenty of material to flesh out his voice acting skills. That's half the battle of making a worthy Chucky film.
  11. If Paramount is promoting the film there, Cruise is gonna show up. He was in Coronado not too long ago. That's right across the bay from Comic Con.
  12. Afterlife, Apocalypse, Retribution, and Final Chapter are not good films. In fact, the only thing good in that catalogue is the TV censored version of Apocalypse where Mike Epps is dubbed saying "Motivator" instead of "Motherf--ker." "Motivator, please." "You motivators are crazy. Look at that big motivator got a rocket launcher." Example:
  13. I don't care what anyone says. Hemsworth's best non Marvel film involves him in a short cameo alongside Timothy Olyphant in the underrated thriller "Perfect Getaway".
  14. I don't mean to discredit the creator of this series, but it needs more Cronenberg and less Cameron. The "save the child savior" is getting tiresome. Less cliche rescue plot, and more emphasis on the terrors of AI. A conversation with Elon Musk is more interesting than the last 3 Terminator films. Ex Machina, despite taking place in mostly one setting, is more thrilling than the last 3 entries. You'd think Cameron, a man of great attention to detail, would focus more on how Terminator being action oriented is tiresome drivel for its subject matter. The micro-budgeted "Machine" has quite a few faults, but at least it engaged the mind for some of its running time. Terminator series has been...stagnant for awhile.
  15. If Tom Hanks is cast as Sully, I'm gonna keep the faith. Acceptable substitute, a slimmer Nick Offerman.
  16. As a huge fan of Lost City, this looks rather timid in comparison. I hope the trailer proves my sentiments to be wrong.
  17. I have a feeling this is going to surprise domestically. This is going to perform in the way everyone wanted "Rush" to, but never did.
  18. This series needs to embrace a distant utopian future where AI has taken over. This dystopian nonsense has been played out to a degree that has made the premise tired. Demolition Man is more prophetic at this point. GET WITH THE TIMES, TERMINATOR.
  19. Disney reigns supreme. I'm saddened by the John Wick drop. Godzilla might even take a hit from Aladdin's performance. WTF?
  20. You could argue F&F, too. I'm thinking of series that present stunts as pure art in breathtaking choreographed and geographically sensible visuals. In this case, I would include the Mad Max series. However, Thunderdome has its rightful detractors.
  21. It now enters that rare echelon of Hollywood action/adventure series that have a consistently solid trilogy. Die Hard, Indiana Jones, the "rebooted" M:I trilogy, and now John Wick. Fans will appreciate one over the other, but the quality is definitely present throughout.
  22. The Continental. It's not entirely official yet, but deals have been made.
  23. The original had a good trailer with a simple and somewhat silly premise. The action scenes presented in the trailer coupled with Keanu's "Yeah, I'm thinking I'm back." was a nice tip of the hat to fans who grew up with his 90's action cinema. Turns out the film was not only littered with excellent action, but had a nice little world tucked beneath all of that bravado. The second expanded that world of assassins with interesting little footnotes. Pop culture latched onto it, and now we have multiple games, comics, and a TV show. Arguably, the most internationally beloved original action character since...Rambo (despite being loosely translated from First Blood). Obviously, this is a better trilogy than Rambo. So, it's never really been a cult thing.
