  1. Fair point. I stand corrected. That should have read 150 million and not 250 million. However even if we took millions off of the estimated P&A budget, we are still looking at a huge loss for its cinematic run. There are no realistic budget number estimates for a Wrinkle In Time that gets this movie close to breaking even. Remember this movie currently stands with a worldwide gross of just 111 million.
  2. Strangely enough, is it possible Infinity War could bump up Black Panther? Incredibly, Black Panther will still be in many theaters when Infinity War hits in a few weeks. I have a friend contemplating seeing both movies back-to-back in a fun Marvel filled weekend when Infinity War opens later this month.
  3. A Wrinkle In Time Total Lifetime Grosses Domestic: $90,122,756 81.0% + Foreign: $21,162,122 19.0% = Worldwide: $111,284,8 78 It has been reported that the production budget for this movie was more than 100 million dollars. Add the reported 150 million in P&A and there is no way this movie is going to break even during its cinematic run. This movie is a bust. It needed a world wide gross of close to 400 million to break even. At the end of the year, this movie will likely be among the top 5 least profitable big budget movies of 2018. I saw A Wrinkle In Time. I thought it was terrible. I held back criticism of the movie to friends and family because I am not the intended demographic audience. I thought it might appeal to a more appropriate fan base. I was wrong. Its bad movie regardless of audience type. In my opinion, this movie suffers from two issues. First, If you read the book you dislike the movie because its different from the original story and what you imagined when you first read it. Secondly, if you didn't read the book, the movie is confusing, there is no real drama, and the plot and villain are ridiculous.
  4. Agreed. Proper, legitimate comparisons are very difficult. Not to go off on a tangent, but it bothers me the way people use "adjusted for inflation" numbers blindly when assessing movies from yesteryear. This is lazy and inaccurate. The truth is comparing movie sales across time is nearly impossible. For instance, movie ticket pricing has risen faster than median wages. It is more difficult to purchase a movie ticket today than it was in the 1970s. The true purchase power of the American public was greater generations ago. So to simply take today's pricing and extrapolate that to ticket sales in 1980 makes no sense. Example. Say in 1977 I sell widgets for $1. And then in 2018 I sell widgets for $20 dollars. To then go back and simply add $19 dollars in value to the widgets I sold in 1977 is ridiculous. If the widgets were $20 dollars in 1977, less widgets would have been sold. Every economist understands this except for the "adjusted for inflation" movie list people. if Gone with the Wind were released today, it would not generate close to its "adjusted for inflation" 1939 revenue. PERIOD. There are a lot of people that don't buy movie tickets because the price is too high. But if movie ticket prices were adjusted to inflation based on median working wages, they would go. Additionally, movies years ago faced vastly less competition. Major movies would often stay in theaters for a full year or more. Gone With the Wind just to continue with this example, was in theaters for decades. Star Wars (May 1977) had a theater run well into 1978 and beyond. To be clear, I'm not counting re-releases. Just standard movie releases a generation ago gave films the opportunity to "run up the score" that just don't exist today. Just as an example, I wanted to see Tomb Raider this weekend. At my favorite theater, its already gone. Tomb Raider would still be there if it were 1985. Finally, the internet, Netflix, VUDU, HULU, Cable etc. has clearly impacted theater movie business. Does this mean almost every top 20 grossing move of all time has been made in the last 10 years? Of course not. But its equally wrong to downplay movies of today, simply by adjusting ticket pricing of today to figures from 10-70 years ago.
  5. The people of the Netherlands are very intelligent. They build sophisticated and inclusive societies with a very high standard of living. The Netherlands are largely neutral in any worldwide conflict. Its easy to see why they would relate to so well to the people of Wakanda.
  6. I think Aquaman has the chance to be real good. The biggest problem the movie will have is public relations. First, Aquaman (thanks largely to the popular 1970s-80s Saturday cartoon) became a laughing-stock for generation of super hero fans. Secondly, DC Comics carries a bad reputation for movie making. I fear the public won't give this movie a fair chance on is own merits. It's definitely unlikely to beat out Mary Poppins.
  7. A Wrinkle in Time 3/26/18 Total Lifetime Grosses Domestic: $74,984,250 84.1% + Foreign: $14,191,514 15.9% = Worldwide: $89,175,764 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=ladisneyfairytale22018.htm This movie is a disaster. I don't see how it turns a profit for Disney.
  8. Total Lifetime Grosses 3/23/18 Domestic: $42,431,000 38.3% + Foreign: $68,443,255 61.7% = Worldwide: $110,874,255 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=redsparrow.htm This movie likely still has a long way to go to break even. I think it needs to be around 175-195 (guess work) to avoid losing money.
  9. If only they could have done more. I don't know how anyone associated with this film sleeps at night following such an underachievement.
  10. Agree. Politics and cultural significance are important with any artistic creation. But regardless of who was directing or acting in the movie; Black Panther is a box office smash because it's a fantastic movie. Wonder Woman was successful because it is good. A Wrinkle in Time is not a great picture, period. Social justice is not moved forward when society demands you like something because of the gender and race of the director, and not the product he/she actually produced.
  11. I love this forum. But sometimes I wish the site came with an acronym users guide. Especially for new posters.
  12. I agree with your observation. I go to the movies a lot. The trailer runs continuously. But I don't think its catching on. No buzz. I think many movie goers will find the concept/storyline confusing and uninteresting. The movie's story certainly hasn't caught on with me. I always think to myself... If I'm not excited about this, how does the movie find a large audience?
  13. This is a good movie. It was better than I expected. I didn't find it too long as I had read in several mainstream reviews. Critics are being overly harsh. This movie was very entertaining. The Good- Very good storyline. The acting was superb. Nice cold war theme in the modern era. Very realistic fighting by movie standards with blood, bruises, injuries, etc. Fascinating mind control teachings which made you think. Very sexual. Excellent surprise ending. The Bad- Although I thought it really added to the movie, some people may not like the gore and blood (there's lots of it!). The movie really marketed nudity as its selling point. But JL is only nude in one scene (that was a surprise!). Finally, you have to be smart, its possible to get lost in the espionage storytelling. This to me was NOT a "women empowerment" movie. Some may find that good. Others bad. Grade-B. I would recommend this picture. I thought it was very good.
  14. I am interested in how The Black Panther will do overseas. I think using the highest grossing super hero movie of all time, "Marvel's The Avengers" is a good guide to chart The Black Panther's progress. Here are the top 33 foreign opening weekends for the Avengers. These are all of the countries where the Avengers earned 1 million or more at the box office opening weekend. China is not listed because The Avengers opened in China at a later date. In the list below, the first number is the Avengers Box office opening weekend number. The second number is the Black Panther's box office total. Countries in bold are where the Black Panther had a stronger opening weekend than Marvel's The Avengers. The numbers are from Box Office Mojo. http://www.boxofficemojo.com Country The Avengers Black Panther 1. Argentina $3,577,647 1,600,889 2. Australia $13,923,182 8,323,490 3. 16. Top 5 Weekend Box Office Totals For Week Two: 1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $149,202,860 2. Jurassic World – $106,588,440 3. Marvel’s The Avengers – $103,052,274 4. Beauty and the Beast (2017) – $90,426,717 5. Avengers: Age of Ultron – $77,746,929 Source: http://collider.com/black-panther-box-office-friday/#annihilation This list represents the top 5 second weekend box office results in cinema history. I thought it would be good to have these numbers clearly listed for reference. This should make following The Black Panthers weekend box office totals more fun and interesting.
  17. BLACK PANTHER (Marvel/Disney) is now in competition only with the loftiest movie hits. According to preliminary numbers at Deadline, its 2nd Friday was $28.4M (down 63% from last week), behind just The Avengers‘ $29.2M in the Marvel universe (down 64% from its own opening day), as well as The Force Awakens ($49.3M, down 58%) and Jurassic World ($29.1M, down 65%) outside it. It should have a $100M 2nd weekend, also behind only those 3 blockbusters, and within reach of Avengers ($103.1M) and Jurassic ($106.6M). It seems to be headed for at least $575M in the US, and if it can stay on pace with Avengers and Jurassic, the total would be more like $625M+. Barring an overseas collapse and failure in China when it opens there 2 weeks from now, it should be on its way to a $1B worldwide total, with plenty of potential upside beyond that. source: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/early-friday-box-office-black-panther-stays-superpowered-game-night-ok-annihilation-perishes.html Second Weekend Box Office Possibilities Within Reach: Jurassic World 106.6 Avengers 103.1 Black Panther TBD Second Friday All time Box Office Leaders: The Force Awakens 49.3 The Avengers 29.2 Jurassic World 29.1 The Black Panther 28.9
