I do think there's a "blood in the water" element here, in that a lot of reviewers across the country, outside of LA and New York, will see the film knowing that it isn't controversial to give it a negative grade. It's a potential side effect of the early review embargo and staggered press screenings. If reaction is positive, those smaller market reviews are less likely to make a ruckus. If reaction is mixed, well...

But see, as someone with no previous experience with this story, it doesn't play like that - or at least it didn't for me. My impression of DUNE is that it's very clearly designed for people who already love DUNE. And as folks in this thread have compared it to THE LORD OF THE RINGS, that is the exact opposite approach Peter Jackson took (or Andy Muschietti took with IT, to compare it to WB's other recent intended duology).

Here's what happens to me when a tweet like this goes out: I immediately get flooded with DMs asking me for more information which I can't provide. I immediately get a bunch of people calling me an idiot because they're defensive of a movie they haven't seen yet. Let's assume I just put out that initial tweet with no clarification (seven whole minutes) after. What exactly do I gain from that? I don't have a platform that makes money. I don't have a name that needs bigger "reach". And forgive me, but a couple hundred strangers liking my tweet doesn't exactly make my day.

I love when I post something, immediately clarify that I'm not sure if it's true because the timeline the source provided doesn't match up with information from leaks, and people are like "idk if VA's information is gonna hold up 🤔" That's... the point. It was an interesting thing I'd heard taken in tandem with the more muted than normal critical response, not a scoop broadcasting Marvel's dirty laundry to the world

I backtracked because there seemed to be immediate "OMG Chloe Zhao and Marvel hated each other!" replies and quote tweets and that is not what I meant. I mentioned I'd heard something and if the movie isn't good and if that was true, it'd be interesting to see how the Hollywood press addresses it. If I "Full Disclosure" anything it means calm down, this isn't end of the world stuff.

Where did you see terms? My understanding is that Legendary gets to keep all of the Chinese gross as compensation for the HBO Max release. But I know negotiations went forever so it would’ve been smart for Legendary to get a sweeter deal than that. Going back to my original post, I think the difference between this and DETECTIVE PIKACHU is that WB didn’t have a streaming service with a rabid need for content then, and making good on their “promise” for a DUNE sequel looks good (and shows good faith) to filmmakers still annoyed after last year’s decision.

I would caution people again to remember it’s not just a WB decision - Legendary owns the film rights to Dune. Is Legendary willing to put up another $120M for a sequel based on the numbers DUNE has put up, assuming the sequel’s budget stays at around $165M? If not, is WB willing to put more skin in the game? DETECTIVE PIKACHU, another Legendary production that went to Warner Bros, grossed $433M on a $150M budget and they chose not to go forward with a sequel for reasons like these. (I believe DUNE 2 is happening, I just think it’s important to remember this isn’t just a question of WB saying “Yes, make a new one!”)

Between Halloween falling on Sunday and Universal-adjacent LAST NIGHT IN SOHO opening next week (not that studios would ever give money from an opener to a holdover...), HALLOWEEN KILLS could in theory have a decent enough hold that it can be dragged over the $100 million mark. Seems like a long-shot though.

Maybe? Does Josh Brolin need to be hard-ass military guy? If not, that saves you a couple million dollars. Does Javier Bardem need to play “Hi I’m cameoing so you’ll remember me in the sequel” guy? If not, there’s a few more million saved. -

The sad thing with DUNE is that if it cost $100 million to make instead of $165 million, a $40M-ish opening and $300M+ worldwide finish wouldn't even be in question as being, at the very least, pretty good. Movies are too expensive now.
