yeah sure no one influences what type of "movies" are to be made except the producers and investors who want their movies to be as profitable as possible so they're designed for maximum mainstream appeal at the expense of the director's vision.
unpopular opinion but I think blockbusters are very counter-productive to the director's creativity because they take too long to make (1-2 years at least) and cost way too much so the director can't do w/e he/she wants when the budget is 200M+ because the producers will be afraid that might alienate some of the potential audiences. I feel instead of spending 200M+ on a single project, they can use that same amount to make 3-4 mid to lower budget films (from different directors) which would usually end up with more variety and interesting results.

This movie will bomb when it opens on August, hopefully when WB are done using this nolan popcorn movie as a guinea pig, they will move WW84 to a better release date

The Young Girls of Rochefort has been on my watchlist for a while, I saw that the criterion channel have a digital restoration of it so i'll probably check it out if the restoration looks good enough as I have been meaning to start watching more french new wave films.

ammonite & true mothers are confirmed for TIFF. also read that Venice is staying in September. both festivals are expected to have much smaller than usual lineup.
Oscar season will likely start in December instead of September as usual now so I think these fall festivals should've moved. as there will be 6-7 months between TIFF and the Oscar ceremony now.

didn't know The Exorcist was the first film to dethrone Gone with the wind at the box office.
interesting how the blockbuster era that started in late 70s-90s is still ruling the box office until now, just with more superhero movies as the dominant franchises.

this is kinda old news, but the new detective conan film (24th) was pushed to april 2021 as expected. this is the first time where they don't release a DC movie since 1997 where they started releasing them yearly since then.

For those who haven't seen it yet, Blindspotting is currently free to rent on google play/itunes. it's one of the better "hidden" gems from 2018 that didn't get as much attention as it should when it first released.

I watched It Happened One Night (1934), the new restoration they did recently for it makes it look really good for its time. I wish more old movies were digitally restored.
also saw a couple of films over the past week. Moonlight was the best

Prisoners and Incendies are what cemented Denis Villeneuve as my favorite contemporary director

I started the last of us part 1, weird how I stayed spoiler-free for a 7 year old "popular" game. the opening scene before main title card was pretty brutal

A movie like this is gonna draw a mostly older crowd and that audience will stay away from most public places (like movie theaters) for the rest of the year so this might be a move. Or the movie is a nonstarter and they figured streaming was better for it. We'll see.
hmmm maybe, or Paramount don't want to spend more $$$ on this for awards campaign. they couldn't get Rocketman anywhere last year besides Song.
the last time they got a bp nomination was in 2017.
-
so it says that the domestic rights will go to Netflix, which is a bit weird because it's usually the reverse. could it be because they are anticipating movie theaters in NA to stay dead in the fall awards season, while everywhere else is going to open and stay open as they handled the pandemic better?
edit : nvm seems like Paramount never had international rights to this. so disregard.

lmao Paramount slacking.
do people still think Netflix won't win best picture this year, they'll have like 4 (maybe 5) bp nominations at this point and if they don't win this year idk when they will
btw I had this Sorkin movie as my 2nd BP winner prediction incase Mank flops. so Netflix has my 2 top predictions

got around to seeing the 2nd film in the Sergio Leone's dollars trilogy, For a Few More Dollars and I liked it way more than Fistful, there was a scene in which Clint Eastwood and the Colonel exchange shooting each other's hats to pieces that was top notch and i loved how good the lighting/shadows looked with the constant close-ups to highlight character tensions, but I can't get over how cool the final duel was synced to the pocket watch theme.
I can't wait to see The Good, The Bad and The Ugly next (which is considered the best from Leone) but this one is prolly a fav in the genre.

haven't seen Memento yet but the only reasons I didn't regret watching Dunkirk was harry styles and Tom Hardy.

One man's mediocre is another man's best superhero movie and most restrained, perfectly executed, master of his craft... In other words, Interstellar is his weakest effort (TDKR is his weakest movie, but the effort's not there compared to everything else)
See how that works? Amazing how your interpretation doesn't match mine.
I wasn't talking about your interpretation, but I thought TDK was a good joker movie but a w/e batman movie.

Dunkirk was the highest rated film of 2017 on Metacritic with a 94. That's, like, insane critical reception.
i meant they don't give great reviews to his best films like they do to his mediocre ones (TDK,Dunkirk)

Nolan hasn't exactly been a critics favorite anyway, his 2 most unique films (Interstellar,Prestige) have the worst reviews relative to the rest.

watched the 3rd and final season of Netflix's Dark. this was the craziest time travel show I've ever seen, hard to believe it had a good ending. I think the fact that the story-telling was done in a unconventional manner makes the last couple of eps work so much better. 9.5/10
