I don't see it at this point, unless it gets another re-release come Oscar season (and is actually an Oscar player). But I'm not that concerned, really. It already performed much stronger than expected and the sequel was confirmed ages ago. $400m was just another flashy number that would've been fun to reach. Speaking of which... Eternals total WW number seems low to me. That's definitely an underperformance, right?

Even though there are little victories here and there, it was still a pretty depressing weekend all around. Save us, Spidey. (Actually curious to see how WSS will do. Feels like there's not much excitement for it, but the reviews are fantastic and it's Spielberg. We'll see).

What the fuck happened with Dune? Edit: IMAX re-release. Duh. Oops.

The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo
Starphanluke replied to grim22's topic in Numbers and Data
I know Star Wars is massively popular in the States, but I'm still always floored when I'm reminded how much those movies can do in pre-sales/preview numbers. -
They're clearly talking critical reviews. Ghostbusters 2016 was also very publicly review-bombed. It got a B+ cinemascore, which isn't great but also not bad. This argument is honestly so old and exhausting. Both movies have their merits and flaws and the similar performances indicate to me a general ceiling/public interest in the franchise.

Weekend Thread (11/12-14) | Eternals 7.82 Fri, Clifford 4.22

I legit had no idea Clifford was also on P+. Solid result all things considered. I'm not sure it would've made much more than this pre-pandemic. -

If that's true, Ghostbusters tracking is about to get very fun. -
Weekend Thread (11/12-14) | Eternals 7.82 Fri, Clifford 4.22

Eternals number doesn't seem all that good to me. Dune's seems lackluster, but I need to go back and look at what last Friday's was in order to really compare. Edit: Dune's Friday hold is better than I was remembering. Ignore me. Still think Eternals' number is weak. -
...that's my point. They didn't make a Solo sequel because it disappointed, just as Eternals is looking to (from many perspectives). Honestly, I could totally see some of those characters leading their own Disney+ shows. I'd watch the hell out of a Kingo or Makkari and Druig show (and I say that as someone who didn't like the movie). I think there's a lot of potential in these characters in smaller groups rather than paying $250m to assemble them all into one bloated tentpole.

Solo had far BETTER critical and audience reception (and likely domestic BO). I really think anyone who says a direct sequel to Eternals is coming anytime soon is kidding themselves. Again, Marvel will find a way to continue these plot threads in other projects, but I just don't see an Eternals 2 at any point in the near future.

Pretty impressive if Dune drops less than 50%, imo. I was expecting it to absolutely tank with the loss of PLFs. As far as Eternals, I do think this is a pretty bad performance, all things considered. I surely don't expect an Eternals 2 anytime soon, but I don't expect them to drop these threads completely, either. There are plenty of other projects these characters (likely in smaller groups) can pop up in.

The funny part of the stupid SW discussion is that I genuinely think a big Star Wars movie could be one of the things to rejuvenate the domestic box office, even moreso than anything Marvel could offer. Marvel of course is the juggernaut worldwide, but SW has a tight grip domestically. Shame there's no SW movie on the horizon. Edit: specifically, I think SW could both convince older crowds to return to theatres AND excite younger crowds in a way most pandemic movies have failed to do thus far.
