The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo
Borobudur replied to grim22's topic in Numbers and Data
I think Gvk chance to pass KOTM is basically dead, now even 100m total is in question unless it quickly stabilized. WB should really reconsider how they film hold up so bad compared to their peers. Nobody hit PVOD last week but still managed to post single-digit drop and Raya & Croods 2 were still doing great and they just chugging along with their streaming debut. -

So going by this pace, MK+DS would still likely to outgross GvK+Unholy (34.8m) even if we minus DS' preview. Domestic market can finally have a 50m total weekend. But still, Sunday number have been bad across the board since the start of the pandemic and constantly trend below that of Friday. Until then, the weekend total can hardly hit its upper limit. -

If only NYC can lift their capacity limit to 33% 3 days earlier....and Regal can at least move up partially part of their reopening plan (170+ cinemas to be reopened in May 7) to Apr 23, then we won't worry too much on the upper limit of both openers -

Not sure if WB is doing a right thing to postpone MK only by one week, should have delay it by 2 weeks. I still don't think domestic market can handle two giant openers. New York is still under strict 25% cap which deadline have been ranting around in their box office report. Even if both DS+ MK overperform, that will be on the huge expenses of holdovers -

DS did have a limited showings starting 26 Feb in Miami for one week for Oscar qualification. Will this small number rolled into its opening weekend? -

They should have worry about the pandemic itself directly since that is the cause of all the worrisome. -

Without BW, these pair do provide some "replacement" as the start of the summer. -

Actually I would think Tenet did have a better market condition compared to GvK internationally. Also, GvK has plenty of market still to come. Final number may only come in by dec. -

DS can be benefited from its great event status as this is the first anime released in theater for over a year. -

20-25 opening for MK? or total sum? if so, DS and MK combined may beat 31.6m that GvK's contribution. -

They have 170+++ cinemas reopened on May 7, that is like one-third of their cinema, which to me seem unjustified since no blockbuster on that week, not even a WB film where they have landed a deal. What film they reopen for? Unless it is for regulatory requirement, I hope they move up the plan or at least partially to Apr 23, at least Mortal Kombat or DS are there to draw crowd. -

GvK - 13.88M | Weekend Thread 09Apr-11Apr
Borobudur replied to titanic2187's topic in Numbers and Data
BOM and The numbers still stubbornly have their Gvk opening at 32.2m. Also, if last GvK's 5 days opening is 48.1m, the Wednesday and Thursday's two day total should be 16.5m instead (added 0.2m) This number is still far far below from the pre-pandemic level when every random weekend we can have 100m++ grosses. Combining all the factors like 25-50% cap, fear factor, regal and Canada closure, these 25m is really just as good as it gets... -

Perhaps last week they were hit hard by the GvK opening, with another empty week ahead, the holdovers will continue to retain good businesses. Most of the studios aware is accepting the fact that they must do something, hybrid , PVOD, theaters exclusivity etc, wait for everything to go back to normal is the last thing they will do to keep their company alive. They are just kind of hoping the best among the worst. -

Judging from the number of Spain, GvK have lost a great deal of money in Euro, especially in UK. -

I guess PWP make commercial sense as long as 25-50% capacity rule is in place. Once they are allowed to go 100%, PWP will no longer as profitable as before unless this really change the way people see movies in the future. -

If this is any guide, this could signal another big domestic opening even if we assumed MK skewed Russian, probably 15m?
