  1. Oppenheimer isn't getting delayed. It's clear the interviewee meant later in the year. It's going to face tougher competition than Barbie in many other slots. Not to mention you don't want it and Napoleon overrunning. That's just lost money for major historicals.
  2. What happens when you lean too much on a brand. Hollywood has done this for eternity. MCU will be sacrificed on the D+ alter. I really think people under estimate how many people 'nope'd out when asked to watch so much content. Pre sales being low back up actual fans walking away rather than just the GA being off put.
  3. I still think this is fairly naive. The GA are not watching films to see toys smash against each other. Avengers had storey arcs for Iron Man, that's what kept audiences coming back. Multiple Spidey's has been done, I think sequels would be successful but it's not repeating NWH numbers with a gimmick alone.
  4. Anyone can make a Dracula film. Fen field is designed to be franchisable so needs a specific brand.
  5. Marvel likely waiting for Mario mania to die down, am not sure how releasing previews and reviews would help when the films still quite far out. Better to wait and hope for a big last minute hype imo.
  6. She Hulk and Ms Marvel both got a lot of trailer views. I think you can over obsess over trailer views especially for a teaser. Does not always lead to audiences. On the like/dislike ratio most people have made the right points on the dislikes but also people like videos for different reasons. Some people do it just to add a video to a playlist under their likes for example, others only to support a creator. Most don’t bother which is a problem.
  7. I mean Captain Marvel got an A cinema score, a lot these decisions came off Marvel riding on a high with End Game and getting pressure to produce TV shows. I think the premise is fine but I’d have had Captain America 2 then this maybe introducing at least one character in that. My issue is probably more the branding than the concept.

Helped by so much on set filming rather than all green screen mush (who knew you don’t have to do green screen on a flat sound stage!) - cat the best part of the trailer but Captain Marvel has a bit more character here. Still comes across as Captain Marvel teaming up with some randos but the fact their leaning on the ‘she’s forced to’ will work fairly well based on the trailer. Still bizzare their 1Bn dollar star is getting what appears to be the smaller part if the trailer is anything to go on. Am just glad the trailer is more or less 95% filmed on sets with design and elevation and stuff in them.
  9. I’m not that sure of this honestly. Most major games are going to sell north of 10M copies plus. It comes down to getting quality teams rather than selling the rights off to the highest bidder. Nintendo has stayed very close to the Mario movie. There will be failures but that doesn’t mean there’s not room for success as well.
  10. The only country with comparable streaming and broadcast numbers as far as I know is the U.K. - with BARB reporting since December both. Below are the only streaming shows to break into the top 50. Glass Onion (Netflix) Bank of Dave (Netflix) Clarkson’s Farms (Amazon) Luther (Netflix) We’ll get some numbers once Marvel items release next on D+ but clearly these are all films/shows that traditionally would do well in U.K. TV. Pretending D+ Marvel will magically be the biggest thing watched across the US is quite silly. Barrier to entry into the top 50 is ~2.9m viewers. Mando did not make it. Unlike the ‘new media’ streaming stats BARB actually provide episodic viewing figures rather than the utterly useless to human kind ‘minutes watched’ stat. Fair to conculde with the numbers we have that Ms Marvel would not have made it but we have Secret Invasion and Loki this year which will be the first tests of the MCU.

Probably want to release it as they are planning to run it with GotG, I think it’s pretty dumb personally looking at concerns with GotG’s numbers but the issue is you want to have the biggest social media impact you can which is reduced if people have seen the trailer when watching GotG. So you kind of have to release it now if planning to run it with GotG.
  12. Thing is I don’t think you can even call a GotG under performance superhero fatigue. They are not superhero’s but just Marvel characters. If it underperforms I think we have to call it what it actually is - Marvel fatigue.
  13. Marvel will be fine. They have the sequel to a +1Bn character teaming up with TV characters from shows very few people watched. A B character taking on the mantle of an A character and first appeared in another tv show which more people watched but was poorly received. And then they have Fantastic Four! A franchise which the GA has no reason to doubt or have quality concerns over. I think a lot of us thought Guardians would be the bright spot in a difficult patch so if it’s struggling that’s basically disaster stations for Marvel. I don’t think you can put it all down to losing actors either - Marvel has really dropped the ball and honestly acted pretty arrogant in their approach in recent years. Ultimately for Disney to tie up so much of their production budgets in MCU it needs to be a regular money returner. If MCU drops to a 500M/600M average (just an example) then it means less MCU films across the franchise. That’s just how the numbers work. For the record I think Guardians will have a late run up but you can’t just hand wave the impact it’s under performance would have.
  14. Honestly not sure about trailers but the Mario franchise is massive. Mario Kart 8 has sold 55M copies WW, and that doesn’t even account for its push into mobile and arcades. What’s happening is really just synergy across the popular franchise and the animation style. It just works and looks Mario. Meanwhile Nintendo has their most popular single console especially in the younger age group. Sonic meanwhile was still very successful but it’s most recent game is fielding <5M sales for perspective. Another aspect of the marketing has been quite quiet, the entire cast has been doing a huge amount of promotion for literally months.
  15. RE GotG3 - it's quite possible it's a bit over exposed but also I think Marvel might be attracting some "wait and see" on the quality front. Will know more as it reaches its release on that front.
  16. Anecdotal but am in a screening for Scream and it's shocking quiet. Cineworld so maybe people avoiding with the news but really odd.
  17. Halloween franchise is more a straight up horror. It's going to do strongly with walk ups. Scream will too but as a franchise it's never been total horror. It'll be more front loaded due to its meta and fans but less legs as a result toom
  18. Ant Man probably second for Tuesday and third this weekend looking at the numbers. Marvel will be in ‘this changes nothing’ marketing mode as they change everything they can behind the scenes.
  19. He’s still in the marketing run of the film so he can’t really say much more. Ultimately I don’t think you can just pick on the writer. Studio signed off on the script and director could have made changes if they wanted to. This is a Marvel product not a Jeff product ultimately. It’s an MCU factory. You can’t blame the new guy if they followed the procedures. The big error was the quantum realm and departing so much from Ant Man films. I get the idea he finds himself against an Avengers level threat but clearly that concept took over the entire film.
  20. Shazam is suffering from WB basically deciding not to market it and save itself some cash. Not seen anything about the movie whereas the first got a big push.

  22. Ya. I wasn’t aware of this stuff until Phase 4 when my interest in the series was growing. It’s clearly just a marketing term right now. There’s no real distinction between a lot of phases. I’d argue you could split it into two phases all together - Infinity Stone saga and then ‘after’ Infinity Stone saga.
  23. Neither SDCC nor a TV show are going to boost The Marvels by very much. Which is one of its major issues, it’s not a Captain Marvel film, instead two tv characters 85% of the audience have zero idea about are being inserted into the film. Audiences know the difference between CM2 and ‘The Marvels’. Good reception will be the thing that helps Marvels but for me its conceptually a clear sign of arrogance from Disney. If am Disney am rebranding it at SDCC to Captain Marvel 2 with a sub title or ‘The Marvels, a Captain Marvel story’ (which is still shit). It’s clear not enough people are watching the TV shows to support the film side and D+ has flatlined growth wise in key markets.
