  1. It is cool that they got an attractive mofo to play Jafar. The original film received criticism for basing Aladdin's look off the Caucasian Tom Cruise while exaggerated ethnic features were assigned to the villainous baddie. So castings for both hero and villain have neatly sidestepped that issue.
  2. Yup, summer's done if no one has bothered to make a daily thread yet WB's still trooping with the early numbers tho
  3. Yes, Into the Woods crossover! Even before clicking that link I guessed he would be a duplicitous princely suitor for Jasmine. Well, he IS indeed playing a prince, wouldn't be surprised if he is a flakey suitor as well. Probably the movie's version of this guy
  4. Lol they shamelessly lifted the saturated colors and the font with its golden/white coloring from the Wonder Woman posters to drive home the association...
  5. I actually see Apes getting hurt much worse if WW had preceded it by just a weekend instead of HC.
  6. Wouldn't an empty August and a slightly underperforming latter half of July have aided WW's leggy run even more? If it had HC's date, I think it would have reached 400M faster in about 7-8 weeks. I don't know if its post 8 weeks' legs would have been as sturdy but I see it making 400M+ regardless. It would have taken a hit from HC OS though.
  7. Aladdin and Flynn Rider are thieves on the run for most of their respective movies too. Are they anti-heroes as well then? And Gamora & co. were only fine with Nebula once she showed her sympathetic, victimized side and made peace with them.
  8. Er... in theory only. They have been declawed beyond recognition and fall in the proper "hero" category, especially compared to the likes of non-MCU anti-heroes like Deadpool and even Netflix Punisher. The (admittedly scant) people who read the pre-movie GotG comics keep complaining about their film depictions as being too Disneyfied. Even the creator of Mantis complained about her interpretation in the film.
  9. MX and Zatanna both have supernatural abilities but are pretty different. Madame Xanadu is an ancient immortal sorceress like Circe. She's Nimue, the sister of Morgan Le Fay and the Lady of the Lake from the King Arthur legends (someone at DC/Vertigo was clearly inspired by The Mists of Avalon while creating her origin ). She specializes in fortune telling and teleportation. Zatanna is like the female equivalent of Mandrake the Magician. In fact, her father Zatarra who preceded her by decades in the comics was a Mandrake rip-off in the 30's. It was possibly the main reason he got supplanted by his daughter, as she was more unique (she's both the magician and his attractive female assistant). Constantine is the most successful solo character from this group and I think the team was essentially created to make him a prominent DC Universe figure once he made the transition from the Vertigo line to the main DCU. So I'd say Zatanna, he and Deadman are their Trinity, though ST and Etrigan have always been there and kind of form a quintet with them. Hmm, I don't think Disney will allow MCU to have a film on anti-heroes TBH. Maybe a Netflix series.
  10. I always knew Black Orchid was a longshot. Swamp Thing will remain as he is considered a sacred Alan Moore contribution. I hoped they would at least include Madame Xanadu. She was their Nick Fury/Amanda Waller of sorts in the original comics and wasn't the Del Toro iteration rumored to be considering Monica Belluci to play her? She's a unique character whose rich Arthurian roots could be mined to great effect.
  11. Ok but the word Bumblebee itself is a public domain word so how can it be trademarked in the first place? Otherwise Disney would be trademarking public domain names like Snow White, Cinderella, Aladdin etc.
  12. DC's Bumblebee was created before Transformers' Bumblebee. And it's an insect name. How the heck can that be trademarked?
  13. Hmm disagree. If the woman herself is comfortable with her hijab, then that's her own agency and choice and taking that away from her would be the antithesis of progress.
  14. Lol who expected them to use the deaging tech throughout the franchise for this? Btw early reactions for It makes it seem like WB has hit the jackpot when it comes to a bunch of talented child actors, so there are enough candidates for Billy and friends.
  15. I don't think most people want it to be completely banned, just highlighting the necessity to always contextualize it. I'd actually prefer if Disney did the same for Song of the South instead of their current approach towards it i.e. pretending it never existed.
  16. Lol I knew somebody would be making a topic about this. I think it's on the wrong board though. Anyway, about damn time. GWTW has been one of the biggest culprits of creating nostalgia for a false Edenic era regarding a magically romantic South where "coloreds knew their place". As Cmasterclay and grey ghost said, no need to ban it from all public showings, but keep it for American studies sessions, theatrical showings for American History festivals, and the home video should come with expert commentary from socio-political historians (though is there GWTW HV already available with such tracks?). It should never be separated from context.
  17. Naah, WW fans are good. I mean, a breakout in Japan would still be ridiculously awesome but at this point it's like complaining about not getting sprinkles with the icing and having to do with plain ole icing.
  18. Also, the regressive Comics Code in the 50's made it possible to file lawsuits against creators for using POC characters as protagonists in their stories. So it wasn't just a default thing, there was the element of fear against using POC characters (especially as leads and love interests) as it would invite a whole lot of hassle.
  19. 99.9% of superhero movie audiences don't read the comics. And features like colored eyes are not exclusively Caucasian traits. DC will subtly draw Zatanna as racially ambiguous if Eiza or another Latina actress is cast. They are slowly but surely going that route with Wonder Woman and Aquaman too.
