Probably one of the best films I've ever seen. People keep talking about the sex scenes, and they are pretty full-on, but behind the controversy is a heartbreaking, honest, intimate, sometimes joyous and always awe-inspiring piece of cinema which reminds us why we go to the movies: to feel something, to see things in a different light and to get completely engaged in the experiences the characters go through.

It's a lovely story about discovering your sexuality, finding love, coping with doubt in relationships and building maturity. I don't really see nothing groundbreaking in it, though, and I've definitely seen better love stories. I'm just saying this because this was so overhyped on the internet... Or maybe I have too many lesbian friends.

Plus, I like the fact that it doesn't go on about LGBT issues, because that wasn't the focus of the movie and it would feel out of place.

aside from making me feel terrible for reasons entirely unrelated to the film, this is an extremely well-acted movie that explores the nuances of 'coming out' (for want of a better term), as well as providing a decade-long view of a typical relationship. unfortunately the story itself is not the most original thing, meaning there are sections of through-the-motions drama. good intensity at times though. there is an awful lot of sex and crying, which is something that a lot of dramas skimp on.

btw, they needed to scrap the pornography sex scenes. for a movie about lesbians, they're male gazey as fuck.

Fuck this lame criticism. If you re doing sex scenes that are a bit hardcore, I sure hope they are male gazey, female gazey, anybody gazey, it s great to have sex scenes that are passionate, intense, hot, steamy, séxy and most of all joyful. Sex is always linked with dark themes in pseudo intelectual films, sex in this movie just portrays a raw passion between two people and I wish we will see a film with that kind of sex scenes with a straight couple.

The author of the comic that inspired the film criticized the sex scenes saying that lesbians didn t have sex that way. You can read on the net tons of lesbian blogs that reacted to this saying it was a complete horseshit criticism like what, to be a true lesbian, you must have sex a certain way to have your lesbian membership card ? There are thousands ways of having lesbian sex, same as straight sex, there is no normality in sex and having a lesbian wanting to put a norm on what kind of sex lesbians should be having is ironic in all sorts of ways.

And kechiche did some research on the subject, he s friends with french and porn directors and actresses.

lesbians don't fuck like that because they were in awkward, weird positions that served only to be stared at on screen. there was no passion at all. it was some stupid lame youporn nonsense.

unless, of course, you think the typical youporn jerkoff session is the definition of passion. if so, well, i am very sorry.
