BO.com 100 Greatest Directors PRESENTATION

Recommended Posts

Linklater not influential? Not sure where you are living. The Before trilogy? Boyhood? These are/will be influential films. I don't know anyone who'd argue that the Before trilogy (or however many there ends up being) is anything but important.

And PTA is a brilliant director and influential and that is that.

What has it influenced?  Come on dude.  Seriously.  The Before Trilogy is a niche bunch of films that has a very minimal audience.  I don't see a lot of directors mentioning the brilliant style of Before when they are making their next film.

I'm not a big fan of Shyamalan after Signs but Unbreakable is a 100% classic and his first two films are miles better than anything Wes Anderson has done.  He's one of the most over rated people in Hollywood.  There really isn't much of a market for his films.  Shyamalan has fallen since Signs, but he is still better than some of the over rated guys mentioned here from time to time.  IMO.

Except we might as well just rank by box-office, then. (And I'd say there's a fairly strong art-house market for him -- certainly as much if not moreso than Woody Allen these days.)

btw, Hulu Plus is a subscription version of Hulu, which lets you stream movies and TV through your laptop or other wifi device.

EDIT: oh, you're talking about Wes. Still brilliant and Influential.

I don't know anyone who cares about The Before Trilogy or Boyhood. What did they influence? Who did they influence? Other than you liking them, who really cares about them? They're not a big deal to most people, if they have even seen them. The Sixth Sense is a big deal.

I'm not saying to rank it just by box office but Wes Anderson may be critically acclaimed and if you want to use critics as a criteria here that is just as unfair as using box office.  What this comes down to is a matter of opinion.  And yours isn't any more right or wrong than Walt Disney's.

The opinion of hundreds of varied people can't all be wrong.

I don't know why people act surprised when a certain film or director that might be a little more high brow appears lower on the list. Most of the discussion around here is about franchise films. Quite frankly I'm astonished some of these even make the list

Who exactly?  What people are saying that Anderson is anything but another run of the mill director?  Has he been nominated for best director?  DGA?  Any award at all for his direction?

You know who has?  Shyamalan.

I wouldn't say Linklater is that influential, but he's definitely one of the most significant independent filmmakers of the past 20 years, and he has done/is doing things in the Before trilogy and Boyhood in terms of telling a story over an extended period of time that very few, if any, directors have ever done before him. Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly are also two highly original pieces of work.

As for Anderson, please, he is practically his own genre at this point.
