Queen's Birthday Showdown

A bit of looking and i came up with the following showdown. Let's hope this is more Mr and Mrs Smith than the much maligned Terminator Salvation. Both films opened in their respective years over the Queen's Birthday Long Weekend to similar results that Prometheus just posted. all 3 have the same target audience (sci fi / action) so i think the comparisons are good. it does give us a very good idea where prometheus is heading already.

Mr & Mrs Smith vs Terminator Salvation vs Prometheus

1: 6.4m/6.4m vs x/x vs 6.8m/7.2m

1(5d): 7.8m/7.8m vs 7.7m/7.8m vs 8.4/8.8

2: 3.0m/12.0m vs 2.3m/11.1m

3: 2.2m/15.3m vs 1.3m/13.2m

4: 1.3m/17.5m vs 527k/14.1m

5: 692k/18.8m vs 273k/14.6m

6: 407k/19.5m vs 130k/14.8m

7: 195k/19.9m vs 29k/14.9m

8: 102k/20.0m

9: 91k/20.2m

FINAL: 20.4m vs 15.0m vs 9.9m

Right now it's very interesting. We don't have a long weekend number but the final week number was 9.5m which isn't bad (9.9m running total including sneaks on wednesday). (about 0.9m in front of mr and mrs smith at the same point.) I might see if there is one more film to add here but i think this will do for starters.

EDIT: updated with RTH's number below :)

An updated showdown for Prometheus.....

I think ID4 is a pie in the sky hope while I think Spider-man 2 numbers shouuld be possible as SM2 late run collapsed a bit.

The 2 queen's birthday comparisons (Smith & Terminator) should be beaten at this stage but kept here for comparisons on what to expect during it's run.

it is indeed having very strong legs... Thinking a very lucrative run over the upcoming holidays (maybe a small boost in there) could push this very close if not past titanics initial run. It is certainly still making enough to get there, it's just whether it can hold onto screens now.Upcoming Releases:14th June - Rock of Ages * already released14th June - That's my boy * already released21st June - Brave21st June - Snow White and the Huntsman (wow a lot of movies targeting the family audience during this period - not surprising i guess but yeah)28th June - Ice Age: Continental Drift (yet again we get the annual animation showdown ~ at least madgascar 3 saw the light and fled this bloodbath)28th June - The Three Stooges (not sure if this will get a truely wide release given it's results so far)2nd July - Katy Perry: Part of me (not sure how wide this will be though)4th July - The Amazing Spider-man * this is released earlier than this is parts of the country5th July - Ted12th July ~ (there isn't anything i can see here that will do well ... )19th July - The Dark Knight Rises26th July - LOL26th July - Magic Mike2nd August - Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter2nd August - Step up: Miami Heat2nd August - GI Joe: Retaliation (errr... i think ninemsn need to update their lists, this has been delayed right ?)

further to the above post on where the avengers might be heading. Harry made 1.3m in his 5th weekend and with average to weak legs made his way from 49.7m to 52.6m as a final (2.9m in total)The Avengers after their 7th weekend made 1.3m and a 51m total. meaning the avengers should be able to make a further 2.9m at least from here...that's 53.9m... The thing is, the Avengers have so far had very very strong legs... not quite at the avatar / titanic level but still very strong. Given this fact, and also the fact that the school holidays are coming up (they start in qld in only 1 weeks time for example), no reason that The Avengers can't find between 1m and 2m more than this. that puts this in the 55m to 56m region for a finish. we only need one even more extreme hold and titanic could finally be in reach. I think personally it will fall short somewhere just above 55m but titanic is not out of reach yet (it's getting harder by the day but there may yet to be one last tilt at the biggest film under avatar. (since they are counting the box office receipts of the 3D seperately this means, titanic remains at 57.6m in the australian charts - PS i disagree with this as it's all the same film ~ and they added star wars additional receipts in 97 to it. but anyway it's an interesting battle- jajang

Very nice charts, Jajang.Great to see such a huge opener like Avengers actually have great legs.

Interestly, The Avengers pulled the 5th Highest 5th Weekend ever, which is just shows how amazing it is (RTH should be able confirm)All Time 5th Weekends List:1. Avatar - 7m (it's such a beast!)2. Up - 3m (gotta love school holidays)3. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - 2.9m (27th - 30th Dec 2001 - so holiday driven also)4. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - 2.4m (26th - 29th Dec 2002 - also holiday driven)5. The Avengers - 2.3m6. Babe - 2.2mIf you sift out the holiday driven weekends (especially the december ones), the avengers rates very highly on this list really only behind avatar which is just amazing. In fact most of the top 10 fell during school holiday periods (even Avatar technically was over a school holiday).....So I'm pretty sure The Avengers 5th Weekend is the highest ever non school/public holiday weekend ever. (yeah ok stretching a bit here but you get the picture that it has had some of the best legs we have ever seen for a big opener. I've excluded the Fellowship of the Rings from this list as I it's not apples for apples - the only number i have for this is 2.5m but this is for a 5 day Australia Day weekend in 2001. If you sifted out the monday i'm pretty sure that would drop to around 2m hence why i've left it off - i know on some lists it continues to be included (moviemarshal). I am obviously sifting it out for obvious reasons.- jajang
