ITALY (Botteghino): 'Kung Fu Panda 4' becomes biggest 2024 film

Recommended Posts

This week is the probably the weakest week during winter, due to Sanremo Music Festival.

Evening shows are empty everywhere, everyone is watching tv at home.

To give you an idea

Sanremo Music Festival prime time

D1 Tue - 15.0m viewers

D2  Wed - 13.4m

D3 Thu - 13.3m

D4 Fri - 15.5m

D5 (Final) - Today

Wow, didn't expect Past Lives to start so well! Looks like it will be at (or near) 1M euros by sunday, really surprising. Looks like another small film where Italy will be one of the best markets (probably ranking #3 or #2 OS market) this year after Poor Things (#2 OS market with some potential to become #1), The Boy and the Heron (#4 OS market), Perfect Days (#1 OS market) and Anyone but You (#4 OS market).

While blockbuster material has been lacking past few months these are all pretty exceptional results on their own, IMO. Quite surprised by Past Lives' result, too, given that it came so late I've already seen it on streaming through VPN (sorry, distributors, but maybe don't wait 8 months next time).

Another decent OW for specialty  market as Zone of Interest opens with about 800k, its second best international OW I believe. Demon Slayer does solid for what it is and opens with more than last year's made in total. Poor Things crosses 8M and will probably see Italy be its best international market as will Past Lives which just crossed 2M euros here. Bob marley has a decent opening.

For some comparisons Elvis grossed 3M euros, Rocketman less than 2M and Whitney 1M

And then we have Bohemian Rhapsody which made 29M

Pretty disappointing OD here, granted it had previews eating into some of the demand while the first one didn't but only about same OD as the first one (which was a thursday opener). Sales do look very spread out around me and it will most likely see better jumls but I'm not convinced this will see a big increase here now, more like a modest one. We'll see I guess.

Not disappointing but not that good too.

Previews were really good with just one night show in 300 copies. This means people can't wait anymore went very soon and a true First day without previews would have been very near to the Total result of First day + previews.

Which is not bad. Could still go near to 3M first weekend. The audience of the movie is not Kids of Disney movies can go easily during weekdays, especially on afternoon shows (as for the previews day probably basically the 90% of all the earning of yesterday was made with the evening shows)

I don't know what your expectations were but 10M+  finals should happen.

Friday was 501K (+18% from first movie 423K) which is good when this movie had One day (+ previews) more while for the first was a second day.

3M are locked. With good increases, seeing the kinda of audience of this, on saturday and sunday 3.5M could happen.

For some reason i thought the First opened with 2.9M but actually opened with 2.1M. So waiting for a good WOM a 50-70% increase on the first weekend seems good to go to over 10M final.

Expecting over 800k today, possibly as much as 1M+ based on my area, hopefully it's not overindexing around me.

I was right:

Dune II Sat - 1,125,962

Dune 1 only did 600k on sat.

Yeah late walk ups were big in big cities.

Today pre Sales seems bigger than saturday but on sunday usually for blockbusters the last walk ups on the last shows of the day are weaker. Even with that and with a softer sunday 1M should be reached also today.

Hard to judge if sun is stronger or weaker for me as my area was pretty much fully sold out on every show yesterday and is again today. In fact I wanted to buy another ticket for today as I came out the show yesterday but there simply are none left to buy except the shit seats on bad time.

Still even on a slight decrease something like ~3.6M seems locked which is quite a big increase from Dune part 1's 2.1M (granted this was a wed opener and not a thu opener).

The zone of interest is doing very good in Italy. Second weekend bigger than the first. Another win story after past lives. 3M should be on lock.

Sadly very bad numbers instead for All of us Strangers. Of course this doesn't have the oscar buzz around It but the very difference is on the distributors...distributors care about the movies like for zone of interest, perfect days or past lives against Disney just has the movie in ita portfolio cause It's Fox and they care only about a technical release before putting It on disney plus probably in a month 😅

Italian really into all the Oscar drama fare. poor things, past live and ZOI all appear more like a legit hit then art house hit here in Italy. Glad in a quiet month all these drama are supporting the baseline.

Yup. As Cineguru put it, jan-feb have been weak mostly because of what has been missing than what released. The arthouse films truly overperformed here but they can't on their own make up for lack of blockbusters.

Yeah oscars really have a big impact here.

In general Italians if the promotion is right love mature dramas (they are the country of Rossellini, Antonioni, Scola etc.. after all).

Wim Wenders last movie is near to 7m dollars without real oscar buzz.

It's a shame Saltburn wasn't released here cause another 3-4M was in the air for me. As probably maestro would have been a decent hit too.

Scorsese made 5.5M. With a movie wasn't 4 hours long probably something around 7 could have happened.
