THE MARTIAN | Oct 2, 2015 | Will compete as a comedy at the Golden Globes

I've only seen the trailer but the earth stuff looks much more interesting than the Mars stuff.I can't decide whether or not to read the book. Everyone says it's great fun but I don't want to lessen the first experience of a hopefully equally fun movie.

Oh hell yeah. The last bit of the trailer when the reporter asks "Is there any chance Mark Whatney is still alive?" gives me chills every time.

The plot doesn't capitalize on a twist or anything. I think you'll only gain appreciation having read the book. That is, if the movie isn't bad.

I think I'll enjoy the movie more than the book, which is really, really rare for me. The book just didn't quite click for me, though I don't regret reading it before the movie. My main problem is the writing style/presentation of the book, but the foundation is there for a great movie.

The book was too omniscient at times.

I didn't mind seeing in the lives of the Ares 3 and NASA people but towards the end the narration turns to 3rd person for Mark and the whole thing with the pod?

I don't know, it cheapened the writing and seemed like an easy way to advance the story. I let it slide because of the atmosphere and just an exciting story told me Weir.

I'm really considering reading the book, but maybe I'll wait until after the movie. I don't want to be spoiled first of all, and I don't want to be disappointed in the movie if I end up liking the book a whole lot better.

I agree.

The biggest problem I had though was that while Watney said he felt alone, depressed, etc. through the logs, I couldn't really feel it, it felt really shoehorned in compared to the lighter bits. Don't get me wrong, the joking and sarcasm is one the books biggest strengths, but it limited the impact of the Watney feeling isolated with no help in sight.

That could be really well done in a visual context, because we actually see it, instead of being told.

Nice point.

Sarcasm can play many ways. Annoyed, amused, or distant and just dealing with it.

After some time, I hope for the latter from Damon's performance. People use what they know to deal with situations...and that's an interesting and entertaining way to do it.

I'm making a damn point to get a pic with Jessica Chastain.

But no, this isn't going to garner any acting noms.

Thanks for actually answering the question, babe.

Damn, I'm mad.

I'm waiting for her to come outta nowhere some year and SNATCH good sis, Meryl's wig, and SCALP Jennifer while she's at it. Though love to both of those goddesses.

Chastain's just the bitch, you know?

Point being...Chastain lives in the skies.
