The Renaissance Fan
Our review, not bad. Hoping for more from Fey and Carlock. http://therenaissancefan.com/whiskey-tango-foxtrot
Webslinger
For whatever problems it has, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is the best cinematic display of Tina Fey's acting talent to date. While certainly not without opportunities to deliver the witty humor at which she excels, Fey tackles more dramatic beats with nuance and precision. Her performance is what keeps the film running smoothly, even though the script is somewhat weak in its third act and it seems as though some meaningful development of secondary characters might have been left on the cutting room floor. Frozen
This movie was terrible. First of all, how is this a comedy? Fandango and everywhere else has it listed as such. It is not a comedy at all. There were a few jokes that were mostly not funny. Other than that it's a war drama biopic, and one that has no plot whatsoever. It's just following this woman around while she tries to figure things out. The characters were horrible. Ian is supposed to be ass, but Kim treated him worse than anything. I can't even remember what Margot Robbie's character was called, but why did she all of a sudden become evil? Or even a good reporter? She's introduced as a party girl. And why did her guide suddenly fall in love with her when he barely knew her and kept coming in and out of the story? And there is an element of racism to it. Everyone seems upset when white people get hurt, but a bomb explodes and we see hurt Arabs and not one person seems to care. Instead we are supposed to focus on Kim trying to cover the story and some guy grabbing her ass. And I guess we were supposed to laugh at her almost stepping on a severed hand? Kinda ridiculous when you consider the soldier's story at the end (which was the only likeable part).

Blame Paramount for taking advantage of Tina Fey's presence and mismarketing the film as a plucky, fish-out-of-water comedy.
department store basement
It's a really stupid violent comedy with a lot of sex jokes and pop cultural references, which are very hit and miss. There's no depth to the characters. It's so cliched that I expected a cheesy love song during the rescue of the "love interest". Spoiler There was. I didn't like Robbie's or Freeman's performances at all. At least Fey is decent. I'm glad Ficarra and Requa treated the movie's premise with dignity though. 55/100 - C+
filmlover
Tina Fey is terrific as ever, and it's a shame that the rest of the movie is kinda only so-so outside of her. B-
Joel M
I think it's a movie that wanted to be a sardonic comedy about the forgotten Afgansistan war on paper, but the subject is just too recent and too politically charged to go full comedy so they turned it into a bland dramedy instead. Long story short it doesn't work at all. The tone is way off between the "serious" stuff and the jokes and Tina's character starts out promising and then gets the self-discovery bullshit arc. The only thing that kinda works in the movie is Fahim and Christopher Abott's performance (the other main arab character is played by Alfred Molina because Hollywood!). Whitewashing done right C. Goffe
There's no pull to it and Fey is 100% miscast there. I say that as someone who sole reason to see Whiskey Tango Foxtrot was her. Also, I'm repelled by the frantic filmmaking (handheld cam+disorienting cuts) displayed here. 35/100 Edited August 10, 2016 by Goffe
