TF5 will surely cross $10m even with a really bad WOM. I wonder how many more $10m+ movies we will see this year. Maybe Spidey, Justice League and Star Wars ?

TF5 gotta be a huge reason on why the local movies didn't do as well as last year. Wasn't last year big Hollywood release only The Legend of Tarzan ?

Agreee on Transformers 5 crossing $10m, with ease.

Last year, Eid fell on Wednesday-Thursday (6-7 July), with the rest of the weekdays (Mon-Tue, Fri) declared as additional holidays. Four local movies were released on 5 July:

  • Koala Kumal (1.86m adm),
  • ILY from 38000ft (1.57m adm),
  • Sabtu Bersama Bapak (639m adm) and
  • Jilbab Traveler (232k adm - the loser of the bunch).
  • Additionally, Rudy Habibie was released on 30 June, the previous Thursday, practically gaining the same holiday boost, and racking 2.01m adm as a result.

With this configuration, three Hollywood release slots were affected:

  • The frst one is the one with The BFG (moved to 6 September, Indonesian gross not reported) and The Legend of Tarzan (you're right, opened head to head with Rudy Habibie and grabbed a respectable $5.7m/2.2m adm).
  • The second one, Eid week itself, had The Secret Life of Pets (moved to 23 August and only got $1.92m/741k adm).
  • The success of the local Eid movies spilled over to the next frame, which was supposedly for Ghosbusters (delayed one week to 21 July, $2.06m/796k adm).

Ghostbusters was screened head to head with Star Trek Beyond, which stayed in its original slot (it had Indonesian star Joe Taslim). The frames after that (Jason Bourne, then Suicided Squad) was basically back to normal scheduling.

sweet 20 is actually very entertaining. still waiting for Valerian because my eyes need something to jerk off to.

I can't wait as well. And from a visual treat standpoint, I think it has already won universal praise.

I was about to post that. The tickets for Spider-Man are selling really fast. I'm excited about the OW (and to see the movie itself of course).

I also hope Sweet 20 are not losing too many screens. Just please take the screens from TF5, and the other local movies instead. It's already at 620k adm and deserves 1m adm. It's gonna be very hard to get 1m, but the WOM is really good, so who knows.

According to United International Pictures Indonesia's Twitter account, Baywatch will be released in Indonesian cinemas on Wednesday, 19th July (https://twitter.com/UIPIndonesia/status/882539581698064384). This leaves space for Dunkirk, which of course will be released the next couple of days after on July 21st in Indonesia (http://www.dunkirkmovie.com/releasedates/).

The next week after, War of the Planet of The Apes will reign when it gets released in Indonesian cinemas on July 26th (source: 20th Century Fox's Twitter page), although it's still unknown what movie will take Friday's slot after that.

Movie schedules for the week of July 31st-August 6th is still unknown, although we already knew some of the release date schedule for the next month. Annabelle: Creation will haunt cinemas when it gets released early in Indonesia on 9th August ( http://wbpsites.com/annabelle2/us/releasedates/), but as usual the next Friday's slot is still unknown.

Cars 3 will be expected to premiere in Indonesia around the week of 14th August-18th August.

Finally, Marvel's Inhumans will be released exclusively in IMAX cinemas on Thursday, 31st August (https://www.facebook.com/IMAX/videos/320501225074572/).

Valerian is still unknown, unfortunately (it hasn't even been classified by Lembaga Sensor Film yet), but perhaps around late July or early August.

(Prima Cinema Multimedia, which distributed movies from studios like Lionsgate and STX Entertainment like Valerian, is often picky at announcing release dates for movies they distribute.)

edit: As well, United International Pictures Indonesia also announced that Despicable Me 3 will finally be released in Indonesia on 12th July (confirming Mal Kelapa Gading's twitter post from May), with midnight shows on Saturday, 8th July.

Spiderman vs Minion... Interesting battle. Who do you think would win? ( in terms of box office gross , of course ). Also will Spiderman be Affected by DM3 release?

Spiderman of course, by far. That's my expectation anyway. Even though it's for sure gonna be affected by DM3. But SM's OW is gonna be huge enough. Meanwhile DM3 won't get maximum number of screens since it still has to share them with SM.

Just saw the movie last night, and I absolutely loved it! Best SM movie since SM2, the most fun SM movie ever and Tom Holland is my favorite Peter Parker and Spiderman. One of my friends who saw it with me loved it too, the other said it was funny, but overall just okay. It was a sold-out show, and people seemed to really enjoy it.

Total box office Spiderman should win it. Spidey will lose some screens to DM3, but it's not going to be as many as TF5 lost this week to Spidey. Maybe the local movies will be the main casualties. Those minions are really popular in here, the McDonald's Happy Meal toys are selling really well.

Yeah, I also saw Spidey last night. Tried 4DX at CGV MOI for the first time. 4DX is definitely an interesting experience, but I'm not sure I will try 4DX often, maybe once every 2 years.

Anyway the movie is good, one of the better Marvel solo movies, Vulture is also better than most MCU villains, Tom Holland is probably my most favourite Spidey. This year is a very good year for comic book movies.

Hi everyone, appreciate that you guys started this... I'm also looking at the Indonesian film industry recently.

Just wondering, do you guys know any good Indonesian producers or directors?

There are a lot actually. First, Mira Lesmana, producer and founder of Miles Films. She's known for producing quality movies, with a lot of them in the all time highest admission list for Indonesian movies (#2, #4 and #8). Riri Riza often works as the director for her movies since he's co-managing Miles Films with her, and he is one of Indonesian top directors.

Hanung Bramantyo is also one of the best. He's able to combine quality and commercial aspects in his movies. As the result, many of them are commercially successful and at the same time winning film awards.

Upi is one of my favorite directors and screenwriters. Her two latest movies (as the screenwriter) are critical and commercial hits with one of them, My Stupid Boss (which she also directed), became the 6th biggest Indonesian movies of all time, and IMO is one of the best comedy ever.

Anggy Umbara has emerged lately as the top new directors after having a string of blockbusters, with his latest movie broke the record by a huge margin to become the biggest Indonesian movie of all time.

My other favorites are Nia Dinata and Joko Anwar. They don't make movies that often though. Their movies are really good but not necessarilly commercial.

Let's talk about the local Eid films first. Ten days into their release slots, these 4 movies ... well, 2 of them at least .... finally hit their strides.

Jailangkung has now outpaced Danur, its 10-day admissions surpassing Danur's 11-day. It has cracked 1.7m admissions, on the way to 2m.

Sweet 20 continues to perform stronger than expected, breaking 700k admissions.

The other two movies, Insya Allah Sah and Surat Kecil Untuk Tuhan, are not so keen to flaunt their admissions numbers, especially SKUT who was the big loser here.

SKUT is the first film to be dropped by the exhibitors as they give way to Spider-Man: Homecoming since Wednesday.

Last reported number of admissions:

  • Jailangkung - 1,739,169
  • Sweet 20 - 741,238
  • Insya Allah Sah - 463,282
  • Surat Kecil Untuk Tuhan - 462,623

As I posted earlier, Transformers: The Last Knight had its first 4 days of release all to itself, then from day 5 onwards had to give away screens to the local movies. After scoring a monstrous $7.13m 5-day OW (about $5m FSS), Optimus Prime and co had to hit the brakes hard. They did cross $10m, but it would be extremely difficult to top Transformers: Age of Extinction's gross of $12.4m. As of 2 July, Last Knight stood at $10.7m or roughly 4m admissions, earning a spot in the Indonesian all-time Top 10 list.

Other update reported was The Mummy which is now at $7.9m / 3m admissions. No new numbers reported for Wonder Woman (again). But somehow Sony keeps reporting the chump change that came from Smurfs: The Lost Village :D.

It's going to be another good year for Indonesian movies.

First, here are the updated admission numbers as of 7 July 2017

Jailangkung is all set to crack 2m, and while the other titles may not eventually crack 1m, altogether these 4 movies have already attracted more than 4 million ticket buyers. Pretty close to last year's crop of 4.3 million.

This puts 2017 back in pace to surpass 2016. With strong titles such as Jangkrik Boss 2 and Ayat-ayat Cinta 2 still to come, the 36.5 million admissions from 2016 is pretty much in play.

So far 2017 admission number is 16.135m, running 109% of 2016 at the same juncture.

It has surpassed 2015's number (15.835m admissions), proving that 2016 (36.564m) was not a fluke.

Let's just see how many movies can crack 1m admissions this year, and (early) congratulations to the Indonesian movie industry.

I completely thought the total admission for Indonesian movies in 2017 was trailing behind 2016, since last year we had huge movies like Comic 8, AADC2 and My Stupid Boss, and some of the movies this year didn't meet expectation in terms of box office. But then I realized 2017 has a lot of movies in the middle (500k - 1m adm) which 2016 lacked of. Very good for Indonesian film industry. This makes me wonder what happened in 2016 that made the total admission doubled the year before.

Also, wow at Jailangkung. It's actually having good legs despite being an awful movie.

@catlover, Until April, 2017 was always ahead of 2016.

January:

2016 = 507,301 adm, very mediocre movies

2017 = 1,756,882 adm, with hits Promise and Security Ugal-ugalan

2017 ahead, 346%

February:

2016 = 2,005,227 adm, London Love Story and Talak 3 were the stars

2017 = 2,321,100 adm, keeping up with Surga yang Tak Dirindukan 2

2017 ahead, 162%

March:

2016 = 2,310,289 adm, Casino Kings 2 leading the way

2017 = 4,878,901 adm, winning big time with Danur, supported with London Love Story 2 and Dear Nathan

2017 ahead, 186%

April:

2016 = 4,076,345 adm, almost entirely by Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2

2017 = 1,920,960 adm, the trio of Stip & Pensil, The Guys and Kartini had to compete against F8

2017 still ahead, only 122% now

May:

2016 = 3,718,316 adm, mostly by My Stupid Boss

2017 = 1,204,246 adm, only Critical Eleven to shoulder the weight

2017 now trailing, 96%

June:

2016 = 2,175,419 adm, almost entirely by Rudy Habibie

2017 = currently 4,481,550 adm, the 4 Eid movies struck big, especially Jailangkung

2017 leads again, 112%

July:

2016 = 4,501,404 adm, this was the Eid frame of 2016

2017 looks to trail again with no solid blockbuster candidate

August:

2016 = 1,042,847 adm, mediocre and poor movies abound

2017 will have Jangkrik Boss 2, so the pendulum will swing towards 2017 lead again
