newbie BO buff
It's been quiet days in the Indonesian Box Office while we await the numbers of Dunkirk. Valerian opened on Tuesday 1 August, to a very muted response. But the news for Indonesian movies, The Doll 2 has reached 1 million admissions, 14 days into its release. It is the fifth movie in 2017 to reach the coveted milestone. With several more strong contenders coming up, 2017 looks to rival 2016's record of 10 one-millioners. Coming up the following weeks: 9 August: the sure-to-be-huge opening of Annabelle: Creation 16 August: Cars 3 31 August: box office behemoth Jangkrik Boss 2 aims to repeat last year's success, in the same second Eid holiday frame ... however in a bitter twist to the studio, one of the main actors was arrested today for drug-related charges ..... will it affect the box office results? Atomic Blonde is slotted for an August release, date unknown. The Dark Tower just passed censorship yesterday, it should jostle for an August slot as well. Hitman's Bodyguard has also passed censorship a while back. Leap! already screened way back in January, with the international title Ballerina. All would be wise to stay away from Jangkrik Boss 2, as it will dominate the screens.
newbie BO buff
Well, WB still won't release the numbers for Dunkirk, so we'll just have to do with what's available. Strangely, there's an update for Beauty and the Beast! War for the Planet of the Apes opened to $2.28m, can't say anything about this since I don't have the data for Dawn and Rise. Despicable Me 3 came to a screeching halt, its final cume will be nowhere near Minions' $8.6m. At the moment I don't have the OW of The Conjuring, but it end up with $7.43m, and that was more than 2.54 million tickets sold. The following year, Annabelle opened at $2.5M and ended its run at $7.9m, the THIRD highest grossing movie of 2014. Beaten only by Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The rest of 2014 movies, you name them all, they grossed less than Annabelle. Then it all went absolutely bonkers with The Conjuring 2. Again, I don't have the OW, but it finished with $12.5m, the THIRD highest grossing movie of 2016. The only ones that can beat it was Captain America: Civil War (15m) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (14m). Unsurprisingly, Indonesia was the FOURTH largest international market for The Conjuring 2. So, absolutely no surprise that exhibitors give roughly 75% screens to Annabelle 2. 1
Mockingjay Raphael
Thank you! Are Horror movies usually huge there? Or TCU is an exception? What are you expecting from A:C? It has a chance at beating TC2?

What are you expecting from A:C? It has a chance at beating TC2? Horror is always big here, but a very specific kind. Supernatural horror. We don't really connect with slashers, psychological thrillers, sci-fi horrors. But haunted houses, demonic possessions, yeah, bring them on! For local movies, this year first, second, and fourth places are (supernatural) horror movies, so you get the idea. For Annabelle 2, I think it has a genuine shot of besting Annabelle, but maybe not Conjuring 2. I am sure a lot of people will see in on the opening weekend, but the tricky part is whether it will retain enough screens to maintain its momentum. August is the month of Independence Day in Indonesia, lots of local movies jostling for screen space. It has about 3 weeks to haunt the screens before Indonesian box office juggernaut Jangkrik Boss arrives on 31 August, and rule over the cinemas. 1

Sure enough, on Wednesday, Annabelle: Creation opened to $456k, the second highest in the world on that day (second only to France). In Indonesia, that OD number is twice the OD of the first Annabelle, and three times the OD of the first Conjuring.

Care to throw a number? Just for fun, Ayat-ayat Cinta nabbed 3,581,947 ticket buyers back in 2008. A short-lived record, since it was obliterated by Laskar Pelangi just a few months later. Before Ayat-ayat Cinta, the local movie record holder was Ada Apa Dengan Cinta with 2.7 million admissions. So that's the number that Titanic has to beat. It doesn't help that 1998 was the Financial Crisis year, so the exchange rate was batshit crazy. newbie BO buff
Last weekend was lethargic in the Indonesian box office, both for local and imported movies.
