January 3-5: Scrooge and Moses Keep 'Johnny Test' at Bay

The critically reviled and incoherently existing 'Johnny Test' was not an expected choice for a film to lead us into Y4. And yet someone thought this was actually going to work. It....sort of did? The $16.3m opening weekend could have been way worse, but I doubt there will be much of a rush to make the sequel, especially if the C- Cinemascore is anything to go off of. This should quickly fade from everyone's memory, including, god willing, the people who worked on it. Meanwhile, 'The Number One Dime' and 'The Prince of Egypt' continue their dominance after the Y3 holiday season.

January 10-12: Cinemas are the Real 'Dead Space'

While the two juggernauts of the Holiday season continue to ace it, the lack of compelling options for audiences are clearly going to only worsen by the end of the month. Hopefully anything this week? I guess Dead Space staying over $25m isn't too shabby, but 'Haunting Hour' left no impression with its one note premise and strong competition from DS. Either way, with Cinemascores of C+ and D respectively, I don't expect much from either.

January 17-20: 'The Mole' Assassinates 'Extrasensory' on Holiday Weekend

It was the first crowd pleasing comedy in a slow season with not horrible critical acclaim. God knows it was bound to break out in this dire time, but with an opening weekend over $38m, it matched  generous expectations nicely. The B+ Cinemascore isn't too shabby either. Extrasensory, on the other hand, was not on the side of sense. With a pitiful $7.2m weekend, it seemed to be blamed on unclear marketing, lack of stellar reviews, and no real unique spin on the premise. The B- Cinemascore isn't too encouraging either. Dead Space took a noticeable tumble, while some of the holdovers from last year are slightly stabilizing.

January 24-26: 'Baseball Boy' Swings for Silver

It won't be the biggest animated film of this or any year, but 'Baseball Boy' at least counts for SOMETHING. With an $14.4m opening weekend, 'Baseball Boy' satisfied families desperate for something new without having to stoop to 'Johnny Test'. The B+ Cinemascore isn't amazing, but it should do the trick for families. 'The Mole', on the other hand, enjoyed a second weekend on top with a strong hold on 38%. This could be in it for the long haul if the season stays this week.

January 31-February 2: Yeezus Christ.

Whether it was buzz from the original or curiosity over Kanye's involvement, 'When a Stranger Calls' somehow managed to surpass expectations and open in second place with $11m. However, with a D Cinemascore, it's unlikely that the film will do remotely anything to keep its slight surprise. It also wasn't enough to upset 'The Mole' from its #1 spot, as the film is turning into a decent surprise hit. However, one thing is clear: This has got to be one of the weakest weekends in CAYOM history. It's awfully telling that a film can make $500k and still be in the top 10.

- One Piece I can see doing 90% Of EDF ($55M/$153M)

- Pillars I can only see $250M-$270M

- I think audiences will eat up MUT and it pulls a 21JS ($30M-$35M/$125M)

- Can You Imagine breaks out since it’s the first major animated movie and first family flick since Pokemon and does a Pigeon but on a smaller scale.

CHAPTER 2: IN THE NICK OF TIME

 

February 7-9: 'Blue' is the Warmest Color; 'Reality' Bites

The first breakout sensation of Y4 is here. Despite a lack of recognition in its heroes, 'Blue and Gold' was carried by a clever marketing campaign, strong reviews, star appeal from Jake. T Austin of the beloved Voltron franchise, and something for audiences of all quadrants. The result? A massive $80m opening weekend. Endless Entertainment is certainly thrilled with the news after a slow start to Y4, but the real question is if it can face off against Stephanie and her Pokemon. With an A Cinemascore, it certainly does seem promising, however. Reality Shift did get a bit stung by the unexpected success of B&G, but still managed a decent opening in the high teens. The film scored a B+ Cinemascore and could carry itself to be a leggy hit. The less said about the hold of 'When a Stranger Calls,' the better.

February 14-16: 'Pokemon' Blasts Off Again, 'Son' Disowned

The first chapter of Pokemon enjoyed a massive lift from a lack of family friendly options and the thrill of seeing the game come to life. While the sequel lost several of those benefits (especially off the heels of 'Blue and Gold'), the film still managed a strong opening weekend, managing north of $100 million for its 3-day weekend. The film scored an A- Cinemascore, so it's possible that it could easily outleg its predecessor. 'Son of Rosemary' also did well at the box office thanks to the buzz around it....but it was not good buzz. Not only did the film crash and burn after an otherwise strong $7.1m Friday, but it also scored the dreaded F Cinemascore. Not even a 2x is set in stone. 'Blue and Gold' surprisingly managed to drop less than 50%, while Reality Shift was a premiere adult option over the long weekend, holding quite nicely.

February 21-23: Audiences Aren't Believers, 'Pokemon' Stays Champion

Its hold wasn't the best there ever was, but 'Rise of the Rockets' actually managed to stay just barely over $40m for its second frame, a strong hold compared to the first film. Meanwhile, the two new openers, 'Frosted' and 'Imagine Dragons: The 3D Concert' floundered. 'Frosted' earned a C- Cinemascore in addition to its weak $5.8m opening frame, while 'Imagine Dragons' scored a solid B+ from fans, still not setting the world on fire with its $8.3m opening weekend. 3D Concerts don't sell like they used to. Meanwhile, 'Blue and Gold' and 'Reality Shift' continue to have impressive, leggy runs.

With the lack of Female oriented films, the adaptation of the short feminist story 'The Female Man' piqued interest, restoring the reputation of Ava DuVernay after her Y3 film which shall not be mentioned. The film scored an opening weekend of $28.3m. Stories From Eden failed to leave a similar impact due to iffy marketing, but still managed  a respectable mid-teens opening. Both films earned a B Cinemascore. 'Pokemon' managed to recover a bit, but it is possible that 'Blue and Gold' may catch up to it soon. Both films are still eyeing totals north of $250m.
