What are we thinking for Joker 2 then? The original opened to £12.5m and finished with £58m.

Will this reach even half of that?

At the moment, I think it’ll struggle to reach £20m.

Seems to have sold fairly well for this weekend, but if WOM ends up being as bad as we keep hearing, it’ll collapse.

Speaking to some of my former colleagues that still work in Cinema’s and they are saying that Joker 2 is selling really well (More than anticipated). Think Joker 2 will have to rely on Europe (more so) than the first movie as from what I’ve heard, North America is not doing as well as predicted.

Joker: Folie A Deux debuts at No.1 this weekend with £5.6m, the sixth-highest 3-day opening of 2024 so far. Todd Phillips’ sequel introduces Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, recording her highest opening for a starring role, overtaking A Star Is Born (£4.0m) and House Of Gucci (£2.4m). The original Joker is the second-highest grossing film rated 15 or above with £58.3m, behind only last year’s Oppenheimer (£59.7m), opening with £12.5m back in 2019. In our PostTrak exit poll, the film gained 1.5-stars and a 62% Total Positive rating. The genre/type of film (31%) and the subject matter/plot (22%) were the top reasons audience members gave for watching the film, whilst 22% also watched as it’s part of a franchise they like.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice falls to No.2 after four weeks at the top, dropping 38% with £1.1m. Tim Burton’s comedy sequel is now the fifth-highest grossing 2024 release with £22.7m, overtaking Kung Fu Panda 4 (£21.9m), It Ends With Us (£21.5m) and Migration (£21.3m).
At No.3 is Speak No Evil with £408k, dropping 37% in its third weekend. The latest horror picture from Universal has a current total of £4.7m, with their current slate in the genre including Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu and Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man both releasing in January.
Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance is at No.4 with £358k, and has the smallest drop of the Top 10 at -15%. MUBI’s horror title is now their second-highest grossing release to date with £2.1m, overtaking Aftersun (£1.8m) and on track to overtake Priscilla (£3.2m).
The Outrun remains at No.5 with £319k, dropping just 20% from its opening weekend. Nora Fingscheidt’s British drama has crossed the £1m mark. Studiocanal are following this with a strong slate of local productions including Paddington In Peru, John Crowley’s We Live In Time and Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths.
Despicable Me 4 gains one spot in its thirteenth week, charting at No.6 with £295k. Universal’s next animated release is the critically acclaimed The Wild Robot from Chris Sanders later this month.
Ellen Kuras’ Lee is at No.7 with £237k, a drop of 46%. The Kate Winslet-starring drama has made £3.3m in total.
Saturday & Sunday previews of Buffalo Kids chart at No.8 with £135k. Warner’s release of the Spanish animated title opens nationwide next weekend.
200% Wolf is at No.9 with £124k, and Star Wars: Episode VI – Return Of The Jedi closes the chart at No.10 with £123k.
The overall box office is up 28% from last weekend, and up 27% versus the equivalent weekend in 2023 when The Exorcist: Believer opened at No.1 with £1.6m.
Year-to-date, 2024 is running 10% behind the same period in 2023.
This week we have Josh Cooley’s animated Transformers One (Paramount), Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 (Signature) and Gary Dauberman’s Salem's Lot (Warner). Studiocanal are also making Paddington and Paddington 2 available for cinemas ahead of Paddington In Peru in November, and Gladiator (Paramount) is back on the big screen before the second instalment.
