I remember being OBSESSED with this movie a child.  It's so sexy and visceral, yet has just the perfect hints of camp and levity.  I'm still upset they didn't live happily ever after.  So -- and I can't believe I'm say this -- mad props to Nolan for recognizing that was DUMB and ending TDKR with Bruce and Selina happy.

The quintessential, never to be improved or replicated, classic Rom-Com (I would argue, it's THE Rom-Com) felt just short of our top ten.  It had tons of support -- appearing on nine lists -- but it's lower 4.5 average ranking held it back.

 

Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner dared to ask the question "can women and men really be friends". 

 

Turns out for Harry and Sally, no.  But the fun in this relationship and movie is the slow burn.  It's the revelation you're in love with your best friend.  The person who has seen you through every break up, and moving day, and life experience.  The revelation at the end comes as this beautiful, "Well, Duh!" moment which leads to a monologue that should be put on the Film Pantheon of GOATS.

I had to laugh at that prompt being the one to random appear -- since that's almost exactly that happens in the movie, and results in the film's sexiest moment:

Howard Ashman was an immense talent who we lost too soon.  "Tale As Old As Time" is so simple yet earnest as sung by Angela Lansbury.  Beauty and the Beast is Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s magnum opus; not only is it one of the best romances (live action or animated) of all time, it is one of the best movies, and best musicals of all time.

I won't front, this one totally came out of left field for me.  I knew folks liked it -- it always makes the Top 100 movies -- but I didn't expect this god warrioring support.  It scored TWO #1 votes.  The only film to do so.

 

Billy Wilder's my man.  He's brought us the iconic romances of Osgood and Jerry (Some Like It Hot), Norma and Joe (Sunset Blvd), Walter and Phyllis (Double Indemnity), and Sabrina and Linus (Sabrina).  He filmed THE Dress and Subway Grates scene with Marilyn.

 

Yet of all of them, there's just something so charming and awkward and sad about Fran and C.C.  And I definitely think it's his most human and imitate relationships.

The concept for this list originated from @Plain Old Tele and I going back and forth for months about how there's no sex in superhero movies, or in modern movies in general.  So I'm happy to report that's he's wrong, and the iconic Steve and Peggy have made it so high on the list.

 

Or everyone thought "[she's] not joking bitch" when I made the crack about not counting lists without them.

 

 

Hayley Atwell is the GOAT.  She managed to exploit the nuclear heat that she and Evans had in The First Avenger, and carry that over a decade, through six movies (even if she's not actively in five of them), get her OWN spin off TV show, AND the walk away most popular What If Episode with "What if Peggy Carter Was The First Avenger?"**:

 

 

This woman single handedly ended the Sharon Carter Reign Of Terror we've been dealing with in the comics for 50 years.  

 

 

 

 

Well, not single-handedly.  Steve and Peggy are all about finding the right partner, so get someone who looks at you the way Evans looks at Atwell.

 

 

Steve and Peggy both needed someone to see past what was holding them back -- one's preserved as too weak and skinny, the other a woman navigating a man's world -- from their true potential.  The First Avenger does a masterful job of establishing Skinny Steve before he turned into the most beautiful man in the universe.  And it rightfully establishes that Peggy fell in love with that Twink made of piss and vinegar.  It was true love the minute BOTH of them ran for that grenade at training camp.   

 

 

AND!  To anyone who hated the ending of Endgame and says it doesn't make sense (or aka you ship Bucky/Steve), let me say once again, that this was the movie that established Hank Pym's Quantum Zone Van is literally a foundation of youth machine.  All they gotta do is pop Steve in front of that thing, and viola, he's off running a service dog training facility while his boyfriend Sam is off saving the world.

If there was any comic book ship on film to beat out Peggy and Steve, it's no doubt this one.

 

Lois and Clark.  Kind of like Han and Leia, they just deserve to be breathed in the same sentence.  You could say that Clark Kent's humanity, his soul, lives in Lois.  Who better to keep it safe than that trail-blazing, no-shit-taking, award-winning investigative journalist (who can't spell) Lois Lane?  

 

I was shipping these two before I even knew what shipping was. Cause my first MUST SEE TV show as a girl was Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.  I remember it was the first time I was upset that a network cancelled my favorite tv show.  

 

 

 

 

Whether it's the comics, or the tv series Smallville, Superman: Lois & Clark, Lois & Clark, or the DCAU's Superman: The Animated Series, it always comes back to Richard Donner's Superman.  Sometimes the first one, is just the best one.

 

Christopher Reeves embodies both Superman and Clark Kent with gravitas and grace, as Margot Kidder nails Lois Lane as the embodiment all of the 1970's Women Liberation.  They have such an ease.  It's undeniable.
