Super opening for The Mario Bros. Movie and decent holds for many releases except family fare. With this kind of opening, the game movie should at least hit 4mil total but probably more.

In Austria, a similar chart (Wick more popular here than Manta) but if you think Germany's OW was good, well, the number in Austria is even better - 200k after OW! Also, Pope's Exorcist came in >10k, so much better OW than in Germany, too.

Next weekend: One week after the fine opening in France, Les Trois Mousquetaires: D'Artagnan opens here but the numbers will be MUCH lower if not outright floppy. Also opening: Cocaine Bear (no idea where this may be heading or to whom it might appeal) and Suzume, a real dark horse - anime have become pretty popular lately but since this is an original theme afaik that may be a problem. Looking at presales, I see none of them opening in the 6-digit-range.

I don't know about Germany, in Austria it's a normal release (at my theater, 1 show/day from tomorrow, 2 shows/day starting Monday)

Box-office takings of €229.9m for German cinemas in the first quarter of 2023 were only 1.9% below the same period for the first quarter of 2019, according to provisional figures collated by Comscore. 

 

The first quarter’s takings represented a 72.9% year-on-year increase on the first three months of 2022 when restrictions on seating capacity in cinemas still held sway in many parts of Germany.

 

Disney’s Avatar - The Way Of Water was the first quarter’s most successful film, grossing € 65.4m and garnering 4.7m admission - bringing the film’s cumulative takings and admissions to €137.5m and 10.1m respectively - followed in second place by Universal’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (€11.5m/1.4m admissions).

Wow, what a weekend! Family releases had fine increases (or, in Mario Bros' case, a near-flat hold, astonishing after the already strong OW), and with Suzume and Une belle Course there were two openers with a PTA>200 (Suzume additionaly with strong OD numbers); the new Musketeers movie otoh flopped as expected. Good news from domestic releases, Die drei ??? has now crossed 1,5mil, and Sonne und Beton 1,0mil.

In Austria, with rainy weather, once more even better numbers - Mario Bros. with a slight increase (should be at 400k total by Friday, crazy), John Wick 4 on #2 (already near 200k total) and Cocaine Bear nearly double as strong as in Germany.

Next weekend: Mario Bros. had two super weeks, but with holidays now over, numbers will decline faster (same goes for other family releases) - no problem, the movie has already surpassed expectations and is headed to at least 5mil total! No big openers, so holdovers should do fine (I'm curious about the next weeks for the D&D movie, after the lukewarm opening it managed very solid holds, seems to have generated some good WOM)

Anybody knows if ever was a drop like this for a second weekend with almost one million admits?
