Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will release on 1595 screens.

Not reporting the screen counts as I usually do this weekend because that's pretty much it in regard of new releases.

Any projection for how much it’ll do?

Quick comps for thursday based on pre-sales:

The Marvels (130.9%) = R$3.5M

Napoleon (284%) = R$2.85M

GxK (131.3%) = R$3.03M

Civil War (367%) = R$3.02M

Dune 2 (71.4%) = R$1.14M

Most of comps outside of Dune seens to point at an opening day around R$2.5M-R$3M. At the state of Brazil right now I wonder if that number is possible, it will make it more optimistic if the mid-week report more normal numbers compared to last weekend.

MID-WEEK BOX OFFICE (06-08 MAY)

1) Garfield R$2.1M/ 116.100k admissions

2) The Fall Guy: R$812k/   50.480 admissions

3) Civil War: R$688k/   34.410 admissions

4)The Chosen: R$280k/   26.660 admissions

5) Ferias Trocadas: R$240k/   21.100 admissions

Unfortunately also very weak numbers overall and the box office does not give strong signs of recovering, with the floods situation not improving. But we will see how the weekend goes.

Planet of the Apes opened with R$2.2M and 112.5k admissions, slightly less than GxK's R$2.5M. The result was slightly weaker than the last 3 movies but right now I think that is fair giving our current situation, at least results are comparable and legs should be strong. Here is the first day admissions of the others:

-Rise: 117.2k

-Dawn: 167.4k

-War: 118.3k

Kingdom is looking at an opening weekend of R$11M+.

As Brazil still deal with the floods, Planet of Apes beat GxK as the top opening from 2024, what is great since it had a lower first day than GxK. Compared to the previous trilogy, it opened above Rise and bellow the other two. As reported Disney expects this movie to sell 3M admissions, the big question is: Will it do it? To be honest it is not impossible but I do not have faith. It will require better legs than GxK and that was already a leggy movie besides the tough competition on upcoming weeks, and to be honest again Disney for sure wasn't counting with the floods before making this prediction. This first weekend do point out to good legs at least.

Talking about floods, the damage is still visible as everything outside Garfield and Challengers fell hard. I predict the situation to slowly improve the next few days but there are still ways to go before we go back to normal.

Garfield as mentioned had a great second weekend and Civil War passed the R$20M mark. It is to be seen if it still have steam to pass 1M admissions, Garfield should do before next weekend.

Lots of releases next weekend, IF, Tarot, Back to Black, Beautiful Weeding, The Chosen Episodes 4 & 5, Maestros and Someday We Will Tell Each Other Everything.

The Chosen movies have been huge hits on the brazilian market but the idea of releasing the whole season on theaters in Brazil each between two weeks is really looking like an overkill. The previous Chosen sold 700k admissions, the current one will be down to just only 100k and the next one is tracking be earn even less. From what previously was seen as an event, they are actually managing to make audiences tired.

This weekend sold R$18.8M and 861.5k admissions.

After the massive wednesday this whole weekend and specially Garfield should fall as a huge disapointment, however hear me out, there were huge events this weekend on Brazil that massively damaged the box office. First, the south of the country have been hit by record breaking floods that is currently causing destruction and deaths, second, the Madonna show that attracted a couple of millions of peoples besides the record breaking audience on television. And third, a national test was supposed to take place on sunday but got delayed due to the floods, but still messed the routine on several capitals and small cities. All of that contributed to a negative box office, what is a shame because Garfield was clearly on the route of a record opening.

Next weekend is the release of Planet of the Apes and hopefully some legs to compensate this weekend.

Any numbers on furiosa or negligible?

MID-WEEK BOX OFFICE (13-15 MAY)

1) Planet of the Apes: R$5,02M/ 305.930 admissions

2) Garfield: R$1.8M/  99.208 admissions

3)Fall Guy: R$550k/   27.490 admissions

4) Civil War: R$260k/   21.510 admissions

5) The Chosen: R$251.9k/    16.506 admissions

Those were good mid-week numbers, up more than 50% compared to the same monday-wednesday period last week, and did managed to bring a bit more hope for a possible recovery. PotA, Garfield and Civil War are all now passed the 900k admissions mark. A question mark on the Civil War number though, the box office this past 3 days looks rather low for the amount of admissions, it is most likely a mistake.

Furiosa's pre-sales are around half of Planet of the Apes on the same period and around 25% lower than GxK also on the same period. Pre-sales aren't catching fire so far but to be honest it is not the kind of film to sell a lot early.

The flood once again messing things up: A huge marketing campaign was planned for Furiosa during the Brazilian Football Championship...however the championship have been delayed due to the floods. Warner is now planning ways to compensate this.

A graph on the earnings of this year compare to last year. As you can see, despite giving a fair battle up to that point, from april to now the box office have been consistently bellow last year.

R$24.78M for the box office this weekend and 1.12M admissions. Up 8% from last weekend.

Some good signs of recovery as we see some really strong holds this weekend from Planet of the Apes and Garfield. This weekend they became the movies no. 13th and 14th to reache the 1 million admissions mark this year. Half the list came from new releases and, as expected, The Chosen is down again. One thing to notice is that the two sources, Filme B and Ancine, disagree with Civil War's numbers, with Ancine reporting the movie to be close to R$22M and 950k admissions. I did think the numbers for the mid-week to be low so I am inclined to agree with Ancine despite my top 10.

Next weekend is another one with a lot of releases: Furiosa, Monkey Man, De Repente Miss, The Shift, Sometime I Think About Dying, Fairytale, Mundo Novo and Morando com o Crush.
